Animal lovers: Help me understand (about rats)

I have a 28-year-old step-daughter that has allergies, and asthma, and this sweet young woman has a heart of gold.

She also has six rats. Some are fancy rats and some are not, but they are pets. I wonder if the rats are making her ill. She sleeps with them and dotes on them and takes them to the vet when they are sick.

I understand that when she looks at those rats, she sees what I see when I look at puppies and kittens, and I am trying to understand how much she loves those rats, but that's really not what I'm worried about. Most of all, I'm worried about her health and well-being.

Does anyone know about this new fad of keeping rats as pets? Is there any information about the health risks? And is there any difference between keeping a rat in your house vs. keeping a dog or cat? And can it affect your breathing?

I don't think it's a new fad. Over the years I've known several people who have had pet rats. They say the rats are intelligent and responsive. I have no idea if she could be having a physical reaction to them, however.

It's not a fad. Rats make wonderful pets. I frequently recommend them as a child first personal pet when I see parents and kids near the small animal cages in pet stores. DS's best friend was his pet rat when he was young. He took that rat everywhere. Had a little fanny pack to stash Ralph when he went o into places that didn't allow animals LOL. My DD also kept them when she was living alone. Rats are clean, never bite like hamsters and gerbils are apt to do when stressed and are very trainable. DD even taught hers to use a little bowl in their cage as a potty. LOL

There are no health risks to keeping domesticated rats that are properly card for. As for allergies I suppose you can be allergic to anything but that would be something for you DSD to discuss with her allergist.

I think that this post may help so many people, and the fact that the boy was almost 12 is also meaningful. Had he been 5 or so, he would have been down with the dog. Since he is 11, he must have reached down to the dog for the dog to have gotten his face. (Just guessing here) Isn't it true that fingers look like claws to dogs? In our dog training school we are taught to go up to one another's dogs using the back of our hands or even our fists. We go under the chin, not to the top of the head. After so many years, I had never been taught that most dogs don't want their heads petted (by strangers). Frankly I like the content of what so many people here say, but I wish they would be more respectful. When someone tells me that the Forum has spoken, and why don't I listen, I think I am communicating with a child. Truth does not come from the loudest screamer. When someone is so arrogant as to tell me that if I don't listen to him, I should take my dog to the pound, he negates all of the words that he wrote that could have been very informative. When we ask for advice, we get it. I am very interested in this forum, but we don't know each other, and to presume that we could be in another's shoes is not helpful. To me my dogs are almost human. I know that is a ridiculous thing to say, but it is true. I was shocked when my almost perfect puppy grabbed a bird, and wouldn't let it go. Yuck!! But he is a dog, and it is helpful for us to never forget that dogs are dogs. That is why experts who train Goldens (the only dog I am really familiar with) recommend that they not be left alone with young children. They are dogs and cannot be trusted. Also even though they can be trained perhaps better and faster than any other breed, we cannot trust them off lead - outside. It is helpful for us to hear about what has happened to others. We can spread this information, and help so many people. Don't we all think that dog information and education is lagging behind the year 2008? We don't have good publicity. We are concerned with backyard breeders and stray dogs, but we really have no type of education for the normal family that would like to have a puppy around. We have so much to learn from each other, but nice is a way to go on the forum if we want to learn from each other. I know that this is just my opinion, but I am accustomed to a forum where we do meet with each other from time to time, and we know each other's names. After spending countless hours and $$$ over the past few months at the vet with my dearly adored Himalayan who began by showing similar signs...I discovered her angst, behavioral changes and eventual small [and hidden] body lesions were the result her kitty litter. Apparently, World's Best has changed their "formula" and whatever they've done has had an extremely adverse effect on my cat. There'll be no more corn based litter in this house. Because none of the meds that I administered seemed to work...and "our" extremely talented vet had run out of ideas...I kept poking into "our" daily lives searching for an answer. The discovery was almost accidental...but confirmed when I bought a new litter box and new litter out of desperation. The moment I put the box on the floor...she jumped in for a closer look. Upon addition of the new Swheat litter...she jumped in again and immediately christened it. Mind you...my "only" child has never had to deal with any accumulation in her litter box because she immediately comes to me to report any "contributions". So the condition of her litter box is always near immaculate. I thought I had that situation under control. I never considered it was the litter itself until I went to buy a new supply and got into a discussion with the supplier. The moral of this story...animal changes may often be caused by something very simple. After spending well over $600...I wish I'd had this epiphany earlier. We've been happy ever since with the lesions almost completely gone and her loving personality firmly in tact. HTH.....Anne

The cat would not go in my traps, and now I don't know where she is. I haven't seen her in months. Probably eaten by an owl,along with her babies. I did catch a fox and a raccoon. Neither were pleased... There are no free spay/neuter programs here and none that are reduced rate that are not obnoxious. But i did try to trap her. I can't be in a car with cats because my eyes swell shut but my sister would have driven her to the vet for me. It's easier just to pay for it myself. Trapped this one at work the other night for a truck driver. He said he would have it fixed and he and his wife wanted to attempt to make it into a housecat. It's a mean little thing. I think it will probably make a better barn cat. As long as there aren't any owls lurking.....

I am already on the list for june. They will call me to come pick up a trap the day before she is scheduled to go in. The tricky thing is that I cannot actually take her. I have a severe cat allergy and cant be in a car with one. My eyes swell shut and my throat itches and burns. My sister always takes them for me, so I hope she is available, otherwise I will have to take one of SOs pickup trucks and put her in the bed. I dont wanna do that. Again, finding them homes isnt an issue. If someone at the vet or the place that is going to fix them wants them,they can have them. If not, they can hang around here. No biggie. I am not going to attempt to tame them,as I have no intention of petting them or bringing them in the house. There are lots of places for them to shelter on our land. I feed them in SOs shop, which is far away from my crawlspace. Only mama takes advantage of that right now. She hunts for the kittens. I imagine that soon she will lead them over there where the cat food is though. I look forward to all of them being fixed so I dont have to worry about it anymore. Its just a headache.

You might google "dangers of rats as pets" or something like that and see what you come up with. I know reptiles are dangerous to some people. Maybe rats are to.

As long as she keeps their cage clean, and uses bedding that doesn't cause dust or fumes (no cedar, that sort of thing) then she is fine. Most people that have allergies and asthma would be more likely to react from a cat, dog, or bird than a rodent.

They actually keep themselves pretty clean. And although I've never had one, I know people who have and they are quite funny little characters. Smart, and friendly.

My GD had pet rats also and she has some allergies. I agree, she should have an allergy test done by her Dr. As to the cage, GD used special bedding and had to clean it often. But some rodents do carry the hantavirus in their droppings. Like any other pet, there are good and bad points. Her parents never allowed them to sleep with her. They do carry infectious illness that should be discussed with the vet.

I'm an old person and I remember going to a birthday party when I was 6yo. The little boy had a pet rat. He said he was from France and it was an average pet THERE.

He kept it on top of a table, said it was afraid of heights so it didn't need to be caged.

Rats make great pets, and it's certainly not a "fad".

That said, they may or may not trigger her allergies or asthma. Many things trigger my allergies, but the worst is pollen. I'm also sensitive to cat dander - but I'm not giving up my cats. My allergic reactions to pollen may well be less if I gave them up, but I love my cats.

Your DSD is an adult - I doubt you'll be able to convince her to give up her beloved pets.

We LOVE our rats! We have two and they're just part of the family. :) They snuggle, play, come when called, are potty-trained and even love our dogs. Rats are very clean and don't like it when their cage is dirty. We have what we call a rat-mansion in our DD's room. It's a VERY big cage so that they can roam around it and play chase with each other. They're hilarious- honestly, they have their own sense of humor and love to make you laugh. If you ever have a chance to observe them, you'd be surprised at how smart they are. Rats get a bad rap simply because the FLEAS they carried were what spread the European Bubonic Plague.

Queen Victoria kept pet rats in the mid-1800s, so definitely not a new thing to do.

When my kids where younger, we kept pet rats. They were more my pets than my kids as I truly adored them. The sad part to me about keeping rats, is their short life-span of only about three years. I've had one live into its 4th year but that doesn't give much solace when they finally do pass on.

I'm allergic to just about everything (shellfish, nail polish, sunscreen, cats, rabbits, dogs ... the list goes on) but never had a problem with my rats.

I'll have a pet rat when Hell freezes! Oh, how I hate rodents. I can't imagine having one much less sleeping with one.

Hale Bopp----- DD had a "rat mansion" in her place also. She used a three level giant ferret cage which she outfitted with "potty", hammocks, tubes slides and lots of other luxurious rat condo items. LOL

When she was home the rats roamed free.

Jodi--- It is sad that they have a short life span. It helps to spay and neuter. Less tumors that way.

I think rats would make wonderful pets. They are very smart and clean. I've never had any because I've always had cats.

We used to have 3 pet rats (rescues) and I agree with everyone who wrote they are smart, clean, and affectionate. And I also agree their only drawback is their short lifespan. Very, very sad when they pass after just a few years.

We had two rats when I was a kid. I loved them! Honzie and Gretchen were their names. I'd love to have them again but we have too many other pets right now. It wouldn't be fair. I'd like to have them again someday.

Nope, not new or a fad. Can't help with the allergies other than I would suspect the bedding before the rats.

Wildchild- that's exactly what we have! :) The ferret cage has been awesome and the kids love to put all kinds of toys and goodies in it.

I have bad allergies and some people assume it's because of my cats. Little do they know I tested negative for cat dander on my allergy tests - I'm allergic to airborne pollens.

I wouldn't assume the rats were the source of her allergies. Has she been tested?
