Spice Islands ground ginger

Just saw that China grown ginger has deadly pesticide in it and I worried about my new container of Spice Islands ginger. I emailed them and sure-enough, it is grown in China.

Unfortunately the label only tells you where it is distributed from!

Is there any thing safe coming out of China?
Makes me wonder, how their own population deals
w/all these pesticide's?

More labeling requirements are needed, stating origins
would be helpful in an effort to avoid purchasing products
coming from questionable sources, as in the current
situation w/China.

So, what is Spice Islands saying about all this? Have they tested their Ginger for this pesticide?

Flowerlady this sounds wonderful! I don't care for coffee but occasionally I do like a serving of tiramisu. I think I have to try this for the holiday. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Clove is especially strong if left in jars. My mom made spice bags instead, and allowed the brine to simmer with them. Once the brine was made, she poured it into the cut up green tomatoes, and allowed the spice bag to remain there too. Once the jars were all filled, the spice bag got tossed. Spices inluded: celery seed, mustard seed, dill, allspice, ginger, clove, cinnamon, coriander, peppercorns, bay leaf, and a few more. The the spices were whole, as opposed to ground, so there was little sediment. I still have dried cracked ginger and cinnamon pieces that will last almost forever. There are also pickling spice mixes which usually contain all of the above, as well as some hot peppers. My mom pulled out the hot peppers though, as they just didn't go well. A teaball is tiny if you use that for say a 5 quart or even pint batch. My moms spice bags were at least a cup to two cups of spices for 5-7 quart jars.

Sure it's a little too late, but I've made this one before and it's delicious! Ooey Gooey Pumpkin Bars Makes 6-8 servings Cake: 1 (18 1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix 1 egg 8 tablespoons butter, melted Filling: 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 8 tablespoons butter, melted 1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg fresh whipped cream, for serving 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Combine the cake mix, egg, and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan. 3. To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter, and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mix well. Spread pumpkin mixture over cake batter and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to overbake as the center should be a little gooey. Serve with fresh whipped cream

Here is my almond saffron drink cooler recipe. It is an easy going recipe.. play with the quantities to see what works for you. Enjoy! I use Ultra pasteurized organic milk as it has longer shelf life. Almond Saffron Cooler Whole almonds with skin - 1cup Cashew - optional. You can add up to 1/4 cup Sugar - 1 cup ( use less or more as you desire) Saffron - a good sized pinch. Let your taste buds guide you Cardamom powder - a good sized pinch Nice carrots peeled or baby carrots - 1 cup Milk - 1/2 gallon.. You can use more to dilute. Boil water, drop in the almonds and turn off heat. Keep covered for several hours. The hot water will make easy to slip the skins off. Soak cashews in some water as well. Peel the almond skins.. It should slip off if you pinch it. Steam the carrots. Soak the saffron threads in a tbsp of milk. Grind the almonds, carrots, and cashews to a smooth paste. I use a food processor or blender and use some milk for the liquid. Test with fingers to check if it is smooth. Once it is a smooth paste, add the sugar, the cardamom and the saffron and blend it all together. Mix this paste into the milk to bring the drink together. Taste along the way to adjust for sweetness or thickness. I usually add ice to dilute and cool the drink. Enjoy. Should last in the fridge for a couple of days. If I am making for a picnic or BBQ,, I will sometimes make and pour back into the milk carton or gallon jug. Easier to dispense and clean up is just a toss.

I googled and the first click showed that California based Christopher Ranch distributed it. I thought they were safe!

My guess is its not only ground ginger, its in all the products sold with it - baking mixes, BBQ sauces, etc. Tainted honey is in all these things too. Even vitamins.

Nothing from China is safe, and you don't know what is out there that has it.

Lucyny, I read an article about honey growers in China beating up people who wanted to help wean them off the deadly anti-biotics they used on the bees. The article basically said 'they don't care. Money is everything. Life is cheap.' Shaking head.

I lost two very precious maltese's, my little babies, just nine months apart from each other, one just this past Sept. I can't help but wonder if they weren't poisoned w/their food. My little one was only 7 yrs & my other was 12. Just makes me wonder because the info that we're feed maybe slow or hidden for the "Money is Everything" attitude!

I can't help but wonder how long we've been getting these poisons in our food products, whether it be human or pet products. It makes me want to scream at the F*&%!!! AH's that continue to allow anything from them coming into to the food chain. I'm sorry, I'm just so very upset over this.

Sooo....I guess I will save that little bag of dried Ginger root I bought in Madasgar about 10 years ago....I will tell you for sure they don't know pesticides over there!!

Danggit! I just bought crystallized ginger and fresh ginger...I wonder if it's ok?

I normally use fresh ginger (or fresh that I have frozen) and don't know where it comes from, but I also buy ginger paste that is from M K Agro Exports in India. I think India is not as bad as China. I get a lot of my spices from an Indian market. Most ginger comes from either China or India, and so it might be best go to an an Indian market. The dried spices I buy are Rani Brand and can be found at qualityspices.com. I should probably start growing my own ginger, but it takes quite a bit of water. I have ornamental ginger in my yards, but I have to water it constantly.
