Oh this sounds like a very neat bath Lyban. I think I'd go with the darker of the two choices for more of a contrast from the walls.

I would go with the lighter tile. With everything else in the bathroom white, I like the subtle difference of the lighter floor. I think it will be a nice bridge between the dark cabinet and all the white. I think it will also give you a lot of flexibility as to towel colors and accents in the space.

All that said, are you sure you want the bricklayed tiles on the floor with the subway tiles on the wall? Seems like it might be nicer to have squares on the diagonal or some other shape, rather than rectangles everywhere, including the vanity. Laying square tile on the diagonal will also make the small floor space feel larger.

I can see either color way but prefer the lighter. But to my eye, using the the brick shape and pattern will be overkill. I think you need to change it up for the floor - and for such a small almost square space, I'd go with large square tiles - 18" tiles would layout well and the cuts could be easily hidden.

I vote for the darker color, seems it will offer both some balance and contrast to the room.

But I've got to agree with Les that a square tile laid diagonally would be better for your space. It would avoid the 'overkill' of subway on top of subway, and also visually enlarge the space.

I would do light BUT as long as it's not the lightest color in the room compared with the walls. You want the floor to have a grounding (not floating) effect.

However, if you were to do a wood or porcelain wood tile, I would do a rich warm wood color. I love wood floors in bathrooms (I recently redid my guest bathroom with bamboo flooring - I love it!)

OK. Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to respond. I was hoping for a unanimous vote so I would be sure, but things are never that easy. Right now it seems to me about even for lighter or darker. This is for my daughters home and she does seem to like the brick layed type tiles but I am going to show her your responses and see her ideas on 18 by 18 tile. I do not think it would be too much to have the small brick layed tiles on floor with subways but then again I am not known for my decorating talents.
Please keep the votes coming because we need all the help available.

Another vote for lighter. I also agree with Les though that it's going to be a bit overkill putting the brick pattern on the floor. White subway tiles are a very classic choice in bathrooms; some of the pairing for floor tiles I like the best is a hex or pinwheel tile from American Olean.

I am not sure where to get the hex tiles from but I like those as well. All with gray grout.

that is similar to what is on the floor now. This is a 1940 house with mostly original bathroom. The room is going to be gutted completely. The cast iron tub is being removed now as I type. Here is a photo of the floor now with a crack in it. and the ugly vanity.
Looking at photo you can see that the vanity is right up against wall and door opening is right there. The vanity is 30 inches not counting that little piece going over the toilet. The new vanity is 24 inches and then a new toilet.
I also like the black and white hex or octagon but my daughter wants something still classic and maybe vintage but not the same as before.
The other side of that door is tub so you can see how small a footprint we have.

I actually like the tile she has there now; but I understand the desire for something different, I just don't think another brick pattern is it. We added a very tiny 3rd bathroom during our remodel for our DS to use. More time and effort went into designing that small space to work efficiently and look good than many larger spaces. We also put in a 24" furniture style vanity and opted to put 12x12 tile on the diagonal. I feel the tile laid on the diagonal gives it a more expansive look--which would be my other suggestion if she wants a fresh new look.

I prefer the lighter. I agree that the brick on the floor would be too much. I have three bathrooms with subway tile on the wall. In one (basement) I have 12 x 12 granite on the floor, in the other two we have 6 x 6 tile on the floor. I also agree the hexagon tile is a classic look.

I prefer the tile that is there now too, so I am not much help...sorry. I love your new sink, that will look awesome.

Honestly, with subway tile on the walls, I think the brick look tiles on the floor will be way too busy. I would go with a larger floor tile.
