Thermapen operating temperature for the unit is from -4 to 122ðF (-20 to 50ðC); however I think that means for it to be accurate, does not mean higher temperature will kill the unit.

Solid state components are generally heat sensitive; however, they can take fairly high temperature for a short period of time without being fried.

The probe is a K type thermalcouple device which is rated to take over 500 degrees, so that is OK.

The biggest problem is the LCD display. Most of them cannot take high temperature. Also, some LCDs use a polarizing plastic filter, and that can be damaged by high heat.

Two things will destroy solid state/transistor/IC devices instantly. One is static electricity, and the other is reversed power polarity. I would remove the battery, so that any moisture inside will not conduct electricity to the devices the wrong way. I would also wait much longer than 24 hours to make sure that it is really dry inside.

Firstly it is not the newer model but the original :(

The temp of the toffee when it fell in was around 250 F and it was in there for at least 30 seconds before I found an oven glove I could get it out with, I didn't want to crush it with tongs and the only thing near me was an oven pad for the pot handle.

I think the LCD is OK. Once I dried it off it did power on and the LCD worked OK but it read the room temp as 1771 F !!!

CS did have me remove the battery and it's drying out now. Will know more tomorrow or the next day.

I hope it's OK. I have other plans for a Holiday gift :)

Oh, I do hope it recovers! Bummer.

Just don't go near the stove with your laptop. OK?

Type K thermalcouple probe is made generally using nickel and chromium bi-metal. It is rust-proof and heat-proof. The problem mostly is not related to the probe.

There is most likely internal calibration logic built in to maintain a +- 1 degree accuracy in temperature readings. The fact that you are getting a 1771 degree reading leads me to believe that there are two possible causes:

1. The LCD display has been damaged as I stated in my previous post.
2. There is moisture which leaks a small amount of current to the LCD causing it to display odd numbers. LCD requires extreme small amount of current to display.

Hopefully it is not #1. You may swear somemore if thatâÂÂs the case.

Maybe a bit late but for future reference....

get yourself to an audiologist, the folks who test hearing and sell hearing aids. Folks are constantly wearing their aids into the shower or forgetting them and going for a swim so the hearing aid places all have specialty dryers that dry sensitive electronic equipment.

You might have to smile sweetly or carry some cookies in with you but...
