I'm not sure if the OP is reading this anymore, but I did want to offer advice. I've been scraping (and scraping and scraping, you get the idea) wallpaper for so long. We're in the process of redoing my daughter's room and there were many many layers of wallpaper on the walls. I assumed the layers started in the 1930's, but on one wall, they put sheetrock over the plasterwall. It's some bizarre cardboard-like substance, so I guess in the 1950's- late 60's they just redecorated a lot. Anyway, long story shortened, when I got to the last layer on that cardbaord wall, it's stuck like glue over it. I got off all I could, scrubbed it, and my husband put a layer of plaster over the whole thing and it's now smooth as glass. I don't think this would work with many many layers, but my father in law has done this in the past, and after 20 years all is still good. I wouldn't recommend doing this in the more public areas of the home, but in the bedrooms it might work for you. It sounds like from your post that you are a thoughtful remodeler. I, like so many on this forum, cringe when thinking of "flippers" and the lack of care for history that many have. However, there are people who remodel who do a great job and do it not only to make money, but to improve their community. Those people are to be commended, because their vision helps create a longer history for that house in that community. I hope that you are able to bring that home to its former glory and find a family to love it.

Cheap fabric softener mixed with hot water OR vinegar and hot water both work well to remove paste. The trick is to get it on the wall and let it sit about ten minutes, long enough for the chemicals to do their job. A extra wide putty knife has been my favorite tool for this chore however it can ding the wall if you get too carried away. I usually do both a roll of towels at he baseboard to catch drips and a plastic tarp over the rest to catch flying debris. I like to wipe the putty knife after I use it into a pail so it is clean for the next swipe on the wall. Sometimes my aim into the bucket isn't what it should be and it's a nice help to have that plastic there on the floor to catch mistakes. Paper that has been removed and dried is just as nasty to remove as paper from a wall.

My house still has 30 year old wallpaper(solidly adhered directly to wallboard -under paint. My only other choice was to replace the wallboard. In most of the house the paint has held up well, but in a couple of places (like the dining room wall that backs up to a dryer vent) the paper eventually loosened and buckled. I just patched and patched and patched the board after pulling it off, but would really have to replace the sheet rock to make it perfect.

LOL ;) You know painting over wallpaper is something I never gave a thought to. Sure it could "seem" easier to some people wanting paint instead of the wallpaper that was currently there, but adding moisture over a waterbased paste, to anyone with any sense at all, would realize it would only cause said paste to loosen. But then how ever said most people were that smart, huh? And yes, your hubby has great legs. And arms. I have one of those at home too. And you are correct. Sharing photos and all the comments received is the best way to get more work out of them. They are very easy. Funny, I never would have though while I was in high school that marrying a Jock would be a good thing. But as it turns out, it was a very good idea. Good thing I didn't know him when he was in highschool. I'd have stayed clear for sure. Though I know your guy is also a brain, as is mine. Lucky us.
