Wallpapering directly on drywall

Howdy folks,

I know it is not recommended, but can you wallpaper directly to fresh drywall that has been taped and skimmed, but with no further treatment to it, such as applying a level 5 flat finish? Would the tape joints show through the wallpaper?

We are building our forever home (ha!) and don't anticipate moving ever again. I love wallpaper, and anticipate putting it in a few areas. What sayeth ye?

Don't do it! PO in our last house did and it was awful. We couldn't remove the wallpaper and had to use an intense multi coat process to paint over the wallpaper and it never looked right. You will create a much larger problem down the road if you skimp now.

Sure you can. So long as you don't ever expect to get the wallpaper off the wall, or so long as you won't mind having to reskim the walls with 3/8" sheetrock afterward and then fix all the molding.

Prime the wall with paint primer first to help protect the sheetrock.

Then apply a wallpaper sealer and primer.

Check the "Remodeling Kitchen" thread below. Some of the steps I think will help you better define/identify what you want to do. Right now you seem to be all over the map...not a bad thing, at least initially, but now it's time to pare down your list to what is doable on your budget. In particular, take the Sweeby Test (First Step in the attached thread) to help you focus on what you want out of this remodel. You really need to prioritize what needs to be changed now and what can wait until later when more funds become available. Check on all your cabinet options, not just cost but how much work it will be for you: * paint * strip & re-stain * reface * replace...check out Ikea. If there's one near you, go and see their cabinets....or check them online. Many on this site love them and swear by their sturdy build, great design, and standard hinges & drawer glides. There's even an Ikeafans website to help you with planning, installation, and customization...all, I think, DIY. As others mentioned, keep in mind that some things can add significantly to cost...for example, moving plumbing, electrical, and gas lines. If your corner sink base is very large, is it possible to install pullout shelves or bins to make the space usable rather than move the sink? As to replacing current cabinets with drawers, I don't know. You can probably replace fixed shelves easily enough with pullout shelves, but I don't know about replacing them w/drawers. Another option is to attach the pullout shelves to the door, but that will affect accessibility of the lower shelves. With a tight budget it can be tough, but I remember reading somewhere that tight budgets often result in some of the best and most creative kitchen designs since you have to think through everything carefully and thoroughly. Take your time...do not rush. Keep asking questions and working at it until you come up with something you can live with and work with! We will help you... Good luck! As long as wallboard is in good condition. Meaning no large holes. Backer board comes in a cement type board and is used in showers where moisture will be an issue.

Sounds horrific to me... bead board is no substitute for a smooth sub straight... Sounds like lipstick on a pig... Rip the drywall down and re do it, if your going to live here for any time plus 12 months...

Would it be better to let the wallpaper backing dry after removal of the top layer, then sand it off instead of scraping it wet (which is when I've been having trouble with it taking the top layer of the drywall with it)?

I'm with Annie ...

Use the PVA drywall sealant and at least one good coat of flat latex paint on all drywall (even the stuff that will be behind cabinets).

Then apply the proper wallpaper primer so you can remove it without chewing up the drywall, and then do the wallpaper.

You might want to try posting on the Painting forum about this to see what the pro painters recommend. I would apply Zinsser Shieldz first. It will also make applying the wallpaper easier.

If you LOVE wall paper then you will no doubt want to change the paper as years go by in this your "forever" home. Do it right the first time--save you HOURS AND HOURS of time not to mention the money the fix will cost later.

Thanks for the input. I grew up in the northeast, and oftentimes when people changed out wallpaper, they simply slapped it on top of the previous paper. I'd probably go ahead and prime the wall, but my main concern was whether the tape/mud would show through without adding a level 5 flat texture to the wall.

My house still has 30 year old wallpaper(solidly adhered directly to wallboard -under paint. My only other choice was to replace the wallboard. In most of the house the paint has held up well, but in a couple of places (like the dining room wall that backs up to a dryer vent) the paper eventually loosened and buckled. I just patched and patched and patched the board after pulling it off, but would really have to replace the sheet rock to make it perfect.
