I use mine. I find it very useful the one time a year I make turkey gravy! I have used it other times to separate the fat from broth when I didn't have the luxury of time to chill it so I could remove the fat that way. You will use it. I've had mine 30 years, I think.
I have one and seldom use it....but my son uses his all the time. By gravy separator I assume you mean one of those things with the spout that allows you to pour off the broth from the grease? I just pour the stuff into a pyrex measuring cup and pop it into the freezer for a few moments....when the grease rises I spoon it off. Linda C
I use mine often. In fact, I know I'll use it when I make the Thanksgiving turkey gravy. DH says that fat equals flavor, and to some extent I believe he's right. But I still don't want all the fat. So I'll pour the drippings into my separator (it will take several goes at it) and make a leaner gravy.
Look at me, going from raving about The Two Fat Ladies and then asking how to get the fat from my gravies and sauces - travesty! Back to topic, if it works though, I'm using it. Thanks.
I have a large and small one. For making gravies and sauces immediately, they're wonderful. More fat is removed, however, by chilling overnight and removing the layer of congealed fat.
Be sure to insert the rubber plug in the spout before you pour in the drippings/broth/whatever. Otherwise there'll be a lot of fat caught in the spout. It took me a while to figure out what that plug was for. I failed the intelligence test.
I have one and rarely use it. Instead, I use a 2 cup pyrex glass measuring cup and a ladle. Pour the fatty liquid into the cup (no more than 2/3 full) and wait 20 seconds or so; most of the fat rises. Holding the ladle vertical, handle pointing upward, press the round part of the ladle into the liquid until the fat spills over the rim of the ladle. Pour the fat into an empty tin can or styrofoam cup. Repeat as needed until what's left in the measuring cup is as fat free as you want. Pour the broth from the measuring cup back into the dish, or do whatever you want with it. Put the container of fat in the freezer, to be tossed on garbage day.
Cookie: Why would you buy one and wonder if you really need it ?
Use it, You'll love it !!!
Maybe I'm missing something. My Gravy Boat has a partition in it, so the gravy pours from the bottom. The fat is on top and stays in the Boat. I can nuke it right before serving. Very easy to use. I chill it after Dinner to remove the remaining Fat. LOU
I use mine around 3 or 4 times a year. Not that often but I'm still glad I have it. Mine is just a plain 4 cup one with the strainer top. It works very well. I also let a bit of the fat stay in the gravy. Fat equals flavor. NancyLouise
Do you make gravy in a plastic container in the microwave? Sounds easy....how do you manage that? But since your post was about warning about fats in plastic in the micro...perhaps glass containers? I never make gravy in the micro....is it possible?
âÂÂDo you make gravy in a plastic container in the microwave? Sounds easy....how do you manage that? âÂÂ
I make gravy in a plastic container in the microwave oven by setting the power low and covering the container, essentially steaming the gravy. Of course, stirring the gravy frequently.
âÂÂBut since your post was about warning about fats in plastic in the micro...perhaps glass containers? âÂÂ
Glass containers are completely unpredictable. It depends on what kind of glass. Regular plain soda-lime glass can easily crack if heated unevenly. Being a poor conductor of heat, thick glass containers crack easily. Glass which has imperfections will crack easily. Heated glass if cooled too rapidly will crack. Previous heating/annealing conditions can also create internal stresses which can set off cracking.
The best glass material for heating is borosilicate glass, which is used for lab beakers and flasks
