ever used a flavor injector before?

I had been wanting to try a flavor injector for a while, so I finally bought one last week. I tried to use it to inject glaze into a ham, but it didn't work very well. The flavor didn't get into the ham at all. I imagine they are designed for poultry, which is the reason I bought it anyway. I just happened to be cooking a ham the day I bought the injector, so I wanted to play with it.

The flavor injector is to be a mess to clean (too many small pieces), and it isn't easy at all to use. It's hard to take apart, and hard to manipulate the plunger. I would assume it to be a gimmick. Plus it resembles a hypodermic needle, and that's just scary. Has anyone had good results using one? What do you use yours for? What meat, and what flavors do you use it to inject? Or, do you just keep it in your junk drawer and never use it like I'm probably going to?

I've tried brining a chicken before, but I never plan far enough in advance to have time to do it properly.

Thanks!
