Ever change your hair color on a whim?

I am over 75% gray on the top. For the last couple of months I have been experimenting with the palest blonde color to blend it in, just on the top third or so. Funny thing DH never even noticed until he saw me buy some hair color while we running errands last weekend.

Now I am thinking of going to a darker Medium Ash Blonde. Not so yellow blonde. My fraternal twin sister is a yellow blonde, has been for over 20 years. She wasn't born blonde, but felt blondes had more fun! I was light brown/dark blonde for years till it darkened in my teens.

I will be seeing her in a week. I admit it goes back to when we were kids. I would do anything just to be opposite of her. Our mom use to dress us alike even though we didn't look that much alike and she was a foot taller then me.

So what were the reasons you choose to color your hair and why did you pick the color you did?

Yes! I've highlighted my hair blue, and another time, pink, just for fun, LOL! I change my hair often, mostly ash browns/blondes/carmels/mahogany undertones. I just got mine cut (6 inches shorter which makes it shoulder-length now) yesterday and got it highlighted. Sometimes I do chunky highlights, sometimes blended- it just depends. :) It grows soooooo fast, it makes it fun to change up.

I've had two bad haircuts in my lifetime - 3rd and 12th grades. Both times, stylist took my long hair and I was left looking like a boy. I asked for it the first time, but not the last. Then, I skipped school and got suspended for three days. I still got to go to DisneyWorld with my BF's and his family for Spring Break, so all was not lost. I will never have short hair again. As you can see, it's comical (or frightening?!) how similar my kindergarten and senior hairstyles look. Rest assured there were long, straight looks in between (remember the 70s). I tried to grow it out recently but it ends up too flat. No matter how hard I try to make it a bit poofy with my round brush (I despise hair gels and sprays). I started getting gray hair when I was a senior in HS, and like the above poster I go every three weeks for a slight trim and color. Recently I asked her to start making it lighter since my roots were showing up so bad (at 3 weeks!!!!). I'm not even 55 yet, so I am not ready to go gray... she tells me (I won't look) that I am easily 80% gray - I think she's being generous!). So while I still feel like a brunette, I am slowing becoming more blonde. :( The photo on the right was taken before we went a tad lighter. My hair does not want to hold color. It is very frustrating! I come out one color and easily have 5 shades between visits. I'd love to do something different, but nothing drastic. LOL I like to stroke it when I'm looking in the mirror and raise my eyebrow like Rhett and say stuff like "Frankly Myself I don't give a dam....." Anyhoo...hair loss I wondered about why I had handfuls everytime I brushed my hair. I thought about not brushing my hair and sometimes that works. :) But at some point it needs to be brushed and I pay with twice the amount in my hand. I wonder if superglue would work? Washing my hair in the bathtub becomes quite the ordeal. Sheesh it's like taking a bath in seaweed!! HELP HELP!! ATTACK OF THE HAIRWEEDS! It gets tangled around me and I especially hate it on my hands. EWWW it's touching me!! I know about that fine furr jaws. Nice...when the sunlight hits it, it sparkles. Very pretty....on a troll that is!! pfft! The one recurring dark hair on my chin is a mole (I like to pretend) and we call those "fast hairs". They come out of nowhere...but I'm onto it and either I touch my face a lot or I just get a premonition that it's sneaking out. HA! GOTTCHA YOU LITTLE &$# (I also wondered why I was forgetting what I was doing. It's like my mind moves faster than what I'm doing and I'm onto the next thing (in my mind) before I finished the first thing (with my body)and then can't remember what the first thing is (in my mind) as I stand there in the basement...wondering (it's always the basement isn't it?) Then as I trudge up the basement stairs planning on going onto the next thing that made me forget the first thing, I forget the next thing and at the top of the stairs (it's always the top) I remember what I was going to do in the basement....I must say it's darned good exercise though! I also forget that last important word in the sentence. The word that kind of makes sense of the whole sentence. My family fills in the blanks for me thank goodness. I hate it when I stand there struggling and the other person doesn't tell me what I was going to say!! LOL "YOU'RE MEAN!! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO FILL IN MY SENTENCES FOR ME!!!" My Mom says what she does is say "blah blah blah" LOL It's just easier. It's also easy to repeat what others just said in a conversation instead of coming up with new words. My husband does it too then we do it back and forth for a few minutes...laughing like crazy. Nice to meet everyone here. Thanks for the giggle. And I'm so glad I'm not alone with this crazy stuff. As I read through all the threads I laughed and sometimes cried at the poignancy of the pain. I know I babbled on but I'm seriously giddy with relief that I'm not abnormal...(in this anyways) LOL

For too long. I have very thick, coarse hair with a natural curly/wave. I don't suit it very short - besides, I would need to have it cut every week - it grows like a weed. I greyed in my 20s and am now 63. The grey is iron grey and my complexion is yellow - but this is not apparent until someone holds certain colours against me - then it sure is. And of course my natural hair colour was auburn - I am of Irish heritage. Only colour that suits me - I have tried on wigs in other colours - awful. And red fades. I have my hair cut in layers and keep it a few inches below my ears (when my hair dries after being wet it curls "up" so I need to makes sure that I still have those few inches to peak out from under my hat - and I always wear a hat - red fades). It is very expensive to have it coloured in Toronto - and I do not have highlights - hair is so coarse it appears to be highlighted anyway. I do try and extend the colouring by wearing said hats and basically have it done every 8 weeks - unless I am going somewhere say at week 5 where I have to take my hat off. Not everyone can cut my type of hair. Unfortunately the best colour for me is Goldwell - not cheap. I recently (due to a funeral) had to go to a different salon since my colourist does not work certain days of the week. They used L'Oreal Professsional - which is a good colour product, but apparently I am now allergic to the current formulation. Wonderful. And to think I used to do it myself before the colour was d/c'd. And of course with so much grey now I would not want that tell-tale 2 inch patch of off-colour auburn. I do use a curl enhancement product - but it is hard to find one that is not for fine, thick hair. I need strength in the product.

Dear lord Sara that pic is absolutely gorgeous. I have two I purchased this year after losing my first one last year. As far as buying on a whim I did a lot in the beginning and try to really check out roses before ordering but sometimes I just want it and get it. I can always find room somehow or give away ones i'm not in love with to my sister who loves them all. lol When they get discounted it changes everything too. Its so hard to resist even though I know I already have five of it at home. I'm hopeless sometimes. Just ask April. lol. Beautiful Elle Kate!!

I'm gray when I'm not blondish brown, need color right now. For a while I was reddish, I liked it, but DH didn't.

Both of you are so cute! I have my hair colored every month, light brown with blond streaks. I don't feel like me with any other color and I have tried many.

Haven't colored my hair for 40 years!!!!

Kept it medium shade of blond for the first 28 years, then let it grown in, it was med. brown. When I started to go gray I left it alone, my hair grows very fast, just couldn't see trying to keep the gray roots away. It's now a neat mixture of shades of brown, silver gray and a yellow gray which looks blond. My daughter use to tease me that many woman payed a lot to get my finely highlighted hair. Right now it's way to long and dull looking.

Hey Aptos-

My family lives in Aptos. Right on Trout Gulch Road. I am almost willing to bet that you know them. You have kids about the same age.

Anyway- yes is my answer to your question. My mother was a redhead and when I started to go grey in my early 20's I decided to go red too. I change shades every so often just to give a new look or a lift. I even go to the brown shades once in a while. I say go for it and have fun!

I used to color it a lot in my late teens and twenties, but haven't for decades. It's naturally honey blond with some grey. When I get more grey I'll dye it again. I'm 61 so that should be quite soon!

Yes, every 6 weeks or so, I have it done. And every other time I have it done, I have it highlighted too. I have an appointment this coming Tuesday at 11:30.

Used to color mine at lot during high school. When my boyfriend (now my ex) would come to pick me up he'd smell the hair dye and say, "Come on out! What color is it now!?" LOL

Have had highlights a few times in the last few years and used to get it "streaked". Photos of me from the 70's made me look as old as I do now! LOL

Nothing now but some salt sprinkled in among the dark brown. May get some highlights for summer.

I took cosmetology in high school. We colored each others hair a lot in those classes.
My hair was pitch black, but I started turning gray when I was 17, the same year I married the first time. Coincidence?? I think not!!! :)
When I was 20 I said I would quit coloring my hair and let the gray come through when I was 30.
When I was 30 I decided to wait til I was 40.
When I was 40 I decided to wait til I was 50.
I did let my hair grow out for a short while. Some friends said they liked it, some said they didn't. I didn't like it.
I usually color it a medium gold color now with some streaks.
Hmmm...I'm 60 now; maybe when I'm 70.

I've dyed my hair blond for years. I use different brands and shades. A while ago it looked like too many different shades of blond, so I went medium brown for a few months. Now I'm back to blond again. It's cropped pretty short, so it's easy to color.
I'd like to try black....on a whim one of these days.

I started lightening my brown hair in my teens. I used a product called "Sun In" that you spray on your hair, go out in the sun, and it looked "naturally" blonde. Later I used Nice and Easy. In my 30's I went to a salon and had my shoulder length hair double-processed to platinum blonde. The semi-monthly roots touchups were painful, my scalp burned. I then let my natural brown hair grow back. I get highlights now two or three times a year, I think it helps blend in the grays!

I haven't colored mine in about 15 years, prior to that I did a couple times but never cared for it! However, one time I dressed for halloween as a clown and I put red food color in my hair, alot of red food coloring! I had red hair for a couple days, orange hair for a week, awful!!, finally had to go to a salon to get it dyed back to my natural blonde color. It was a nightmare!

My natural color as an adult was med to dark brown. For many years after going gray I dyed it a light brown. A few years back I decided to grow it long again. Now I play with color a lot more. I started with peek-a-boo highlights, went on to more pronounced highlights and went more reddish in the fall. Now I am a lot more stripey. I have brown hair with a bit a red to it as a base color and highlights that are caramel,Irish Creme and Cafe Latte. I'm a walking Starbucks. LOL

I love the change of color since I plan to have long straight hair for the rest of my life. I will never go back to short and styled. Too much trouble.

OMG...after staring at that picture of the two of you for what seemed hours...I had to go back and reread what you even posted about...It's amazing how you could have shared the same womb for 9 months and have totally different hair styles, and hair features...I woulda thought your hair would have been exactly alike!

I've changed my hair on a whim to many times to count...it's about a 50 50 thing...my haircutter told me if I was gonna color to do it before my surgery as anestheia or however you spell it..messes with the color application...so I hurried and covered my roots two days before the surgery...well geesh it came out this god awful color and so I'm having to live with it for the next few months and just thankful I'm not going anywhere or seeing many peeps....it said medium ash blonde on the bottle and it's this red/henna thing...looks awful...I hate it and will be glad to color over it! I'm trying to find something to color the grey...lighten the dark color a bit and just haven't gotten there yet...I probably should just suck it up and pay the big bucks for a stylist to do it...but my cheap genes wont let me...so I'll just keep experimenting!!
