Rustoleum rusty metal primer on wood?

I was recently using Rustoleum rusty metal primer on a piece of machinery, and accidentally spilt some on a piece unpainted wood. It had thoroughly dried before I tried to remove it. I absolutely could not remove it by scraping, and even after sanding, there are still visible traces.

OTOH, with even the best oil based primer, I have noticed that it is relatively easy to scrape down to bare wood even after the paint has dried. I have often wished that I could get any kind of paint to adhere to wood that well!

Since a gallon of Rustoleum costs about the same as a can of good quality oil primer, I have been wondering if this might make a superior primer for wood. Evidently, the agent that causes it to penetrate and combine with surface rust causes it to penetrate wood as well. Just wonder if anyone has ever tried this. Of course, it would only work with darker paints, since the dark brown primer would undoubtedly show through light-coloured topcoat.
