Exterior steel door--rustoleum anyone?

I have this exterior steel door with wood siding trim around the window is plastic. I removed most of the old paint and really want to make it look like old copper or bronze. Rustoleum has metal spray paints that give a hammered appearance and would cover all those different materials for this door. i wish to find an exterior metallic paint that I can just roll on but really think this might work? What do you think? I know it will probably be on the spendy side using up rattle cans.

I think unless you tape off everything in sight you'll end up with paint on your house! I'm teasing but serious. I use Rustoleum spray all the time. Usually out back near the field behind our house, with cardboard underneath. Forget what I used as a drop cloth once, but it really showed the 'drift', and it went pretty far away from my work area. (And no doubt the reason my late dad sent me out to the back forty when I was a teen and he saw me with a spray can in hand. ;D )

Some of those hammered colors come in quarts, I'm pretty sure. (I'd link to it but Rustoleum's site is down for me.) Depends on color your going for. Shop around, it's my experience that what one store carries another doesn't with that product line. So if you don't see it, doesn't necessarily mean it's not available. (Web site would be the place to check.)

Were it me I'd prime that plastic trim with a good clingy primer first for sure. I like Zinsser Bullseye latex but there are other good ones out there.

As far as appearance, I'm thinking you might be in for a let down. I dunno. Depends on what you're envisioning. I've used several of the metallics in sprays. Deeper colors looks better (bronze). Just recently did an iron bench that I wanted to have an aged copper patina. Copper I had was way to bright and shiny for the project! I ended up spraying a 'blend' of antique gold and aged bronze.

. I've used some stuff that looks like very thin plastic strip with self-adhesive . . believe it's called something like "V-seal" made perhaps by 3-M. It's a continuous strip which you cut to length and then fold in half; and stick to the door frame. It forms a V between the door itself, and the frame. While it does not insulate like foams do; it certainly stops drafts quite well if properly applied. The adhesive may not work real well in the cold. I'd also let the stuff come to room temp and straighten out before I attempted to put it on. It collapses to practically nothing when you close the door; unlike foams and such which take up pretty much a certain amount of space no matter what. I'd like to avoid drilling too on that door or frame . . . . I think most of your typical home supply chain stores will carry something like that . . . cheap too. Bob

Fleetwood is aluminum and from what I recall in no way resembles "steel" in appearance. Steel will have much smaller sightlines. That being said I am confused by what your designer says is not available. Archtops are definitely available in steel, expensive but definitely available.

I've always thought the paint gives one more layer of protection before the elements can get through to the base steel. The bare galvalume surface will patina to a full gray after 5 or more years. The painted surface will take 10 or more years to lose a little bit of it's sheen. You do not want plain galvanized (not many companies offer it for residential roofing). If you're going for bare, the galvalume product is what you want. It's a mix of aluminum and zinc.
