Would you go farther than just returning it?
I most certainly would. Someone higher up than the clerk who takes the return or the local manager should be made aware of the problem. Depending upon what the problem is found to be with the sugar, it might warrant them doing a recall on some of it. Do you still have the bag it came in so it will have the manufacturing codes on it? I would provide that info in the email, and copy (scan) the info off it it before doing the store return.

Funny, I had a different problem. I bought some of their organic sugar (in the plastic jugs) and got it home and found the foil top had been pulled open. I took it back and got a refund, but it was annoying.

No, we never have had. But I'm certainly going to keep a sharp eye out!

That is really nasty, Mad. I would definately send the photos to Walmart or something. Ish! It seems like if a mouse got into it there would be a hole in it. I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole!!

Stuff happens in manufacturing and packaging. They aren't trying to screw you over. I'm sure they will replace it, and the new package will probably be just fine.

I would try to find out just who it is that handles recalls in matters like this...which government agency. I'm personally not sure who that is. You CAN'T be the only one. I think it's the responsible thing to do. It's possible NOTHING will happen, but I still think it should be brought to the attention of the proper people. NO, I don't think the proper people would be the Wal-Mart emplyees. I also have no gripe against Wal-Mart.

I'd contact the FDA just in case but I wouldn't get too worried about it. It happens. The FDA can tell you if there's a concern or not. If the cost is a big thing, then simply return it for an exchange or refund.

I guess the thing I'd be concerned with is, how could just one bag get messed up like that? I agree that Walmart didn't do it on purpose, but there is probably at least one full production run of sugar bags like that, so someone should probably be told (other than just the clerk).

I can't be the only one that got a bag like this.

Years ago when I was in high school, I worked at
a snack product packaging business. I know that
it couldn't have been just one bag.

I think that it had to be the end of a run or the bin.
The paint chip type things I believe are sugar that
has been on the sides of the machinery or bin. That I could live with. The brown and yellow *lumps* on the
other hand were definately not supposed to be in there.
The amount that were in a single bag led me to believe
that it was more than one bag.

being sickened by the possible contamination of a common product.

Good for you for taking the initiative to try and make the right person aware of the problem due to the potential harm it might cause others.

Please keep us posted if and when you hear anything back from them. I would 'think' that they would like for you to provide them with some of the yellow clumps so they could be tested asap to see just what they 'might' be.
