How to keep rabbits off new sod

I love in Corona California on 20 aces where there is wildlife. Our problem I just noticed this morning is that there are rabbits coming into our front yard where we just layed sod down and are pulling it up in clumps and peeing on the lawn and leaving their pellets behind. How do I keep this rabbits off my sod??

I would appreciate any advice A.S.A.P

If you have sod it is likely you have irrigation, this will quickly dilute the small amount of urine they produce, the pellets are organic fertilizer and the nibbling is nothing more than small scale lawn mowing; something I am sure you will engage in.

I personally would feel fortunate that you live in an area with wildlife and focus my attention on issues of real significance. Don't forget, you moved into the rabbits home, not the other way around.

Thank you for your reply but I didn't appreciate you thinking that what I posted wasn't important or a concern for me. Maybe you should of just skipped it and went on to issues of real significance. Moving into the rabbits home area is not news to me.

It depends on where you live. If you really live in downtown Los Angeles, then that is too much water. However, if you live east of there, say in West Covina, then it might be the right amount of water. Every time someone writes in from "Los Angeles," it turns out they live somewhere else. There has only been one person who actually lived in LA. He described where he lived and I did not realize it was in the city limits. Anyway in LA it is most important to know where you really are. Marathon, Marathon II, or Marathon III? Generally you need to keep the sod moist for 2-3 weeks until the roots from the sod knit into the underlying soil. Watering at breakfast time, lunch, and dinner is usually good. If you live west of PCH, that's too much. You might be able to go to once a day in the middle of the afternoon. If you live west of the 405 you can probably back off to 2x per day at lunch and early evening. Any place else and I would water three x per day at breakfast, lunch, and dinner times. Then the trick is how long to water. Measure the output of your sprinkler with a tuna can. Time how long it takes to fill the can. If you can fill the can in 15 minutes, then watering for 15 minutes is WAAAAAy too long. If it takes 8 hours, then you will need to water longer than 15 minutes. Start at 30 minutes. The problem with watering in the very early morning is the afternoon heat will dry up the sod. Watering in the afternoon cools the sod and moistens it just when it needs it most. Once the lawn is established and the roots are deep in the soil, then you can usually go with morning watering. It really makes a difference where you live. Did they roll the sod down? If not you still can do that. If you don't have much sod you can just go out and walk on every square foot of it to tamp it down. Roots will not grow through the air to reach the soil below. If your soil is so soggy or soft that you cannot walk on it without sinking, then you have other problems. We would need to know what caused that. It is very common which is why I bring it up.

About the only way you could put beans out of the reach of bunnies - but within the reach of pre-schoolers - would be to fence in the whole garden. Provided that the problem is rabbits (not deer) a 36" chicken wire fence would keep them out. Be sure that the chicken wire has no gaps at ground level... I hill up the soil about 4" over the bottom wire. For a gate, you don't need anything fancy, unless you feel so inclined... just a removable frame, covered with chicken wire, tied between two posts. I do this on one of my small plots, and secure the gate with a couple pieces of aluminum wire used as twist ties. Rabbits are a big problem in my area too; I've seen 4-5 in my back yard at one time. Because of that, all of my gardens are surrounded by chicken wire (and high fencing to keep out the deer). Without fencing, gardening would be a pointless effort... I'd be feeding the wild life, not my family.

It is not the most savory option but human urine is a good deterrant. I have found you do not have to put on the plants but sprinkle in a perimeter around the plants. If the males in your house have good aim and you live in a seculed area, send them out at night! :) The downside is repeated application which, as the gentleman noted above, is going to be the downside with anything but a fence. I have heard the human hair option works but have never tried it myself. My father in law puts aluminum pie pans on a pole to act as an inexpensive noise maker--they make a lot of noise when they rattle together but if there is no wind, or your garden is outside the bedroom window, this may not work. You may need to try a combo of methods--that's what I did (urine around plants, pepper spray on plants, noise makers and I trellised as many plants as I possibly could) and I think I have finally gotten rid of my critters!

Hey there Rocky, welcome to Gw! I've been dealing with rabbits and deer. There is a product called Deer Off that works well with rabbits as well. I used it and have had good results. It is supposed to last 4 months but check weekly to make sure that there isn't any new munch marks on your plants, if you see some then re-apply. It cost about 17.00 at Home Depot and is in the same section as the weed killers and fertilizers. Good luck and post often! Tracy

This is a *debate* forum. Clearly it is a concern for you, but much like the folks who move in next to a pig farm and then commence to complaining about the smell I feel little concern. I will be kind enough to offer two suggestions: a wire fence or shoot the rabbits and make hasenpfeffer.

Hmmmmmm, hasenpfeffer sounds like a plan but I don't have the recipe. I'm sure you do, so could you share it.

There are a lot of rabbit repellents on the market. Things such as Liquid Fence do work, but you have to keep renewing them.
Rabbits don't generally do any harm to turf grass. Flower gardens are where they do their damage. The rabbit pellets are an excellent fertilizer. I wish I had a source of large quantities of it that didn't have timothy hay in it. I don't think that rabbit urine will harm your grass either. I have large areas of blue grass and lots of rabbits. I don't find dead spots in the lawn.

Aside from repellents, I know of no other solution other than fencing them out or shooting them.

I live in Reno where Sagebrush is the predominant natural flora. We have a small putting green sized lawn and rabbits are, indeed, a problem. We have cottontails and Jacks but mostly cottontails this year. Everyone in the neighborhood is aware of it. They sit on the lawn, eating the grass, and their urine kills it so they spread into the un-killed grass. This year is particularly bad because the local coyotes have been reduced because of a bounty program. Catlady's post has valuable info.
