Artificially enhancing the cold tolerance of plants.
Comments (7)A couple years ago I heard of a cold hardiness trick that I saved in my files. I've never tried it because I'm in a pretty warm zone, but with yesterday's temperature drop (went from 59F to 3F in 24 hours) I may wish I would have tried this. Passed down from an old fruit grower: In the late fall on a day of 35F or warmer, spray the tree with rubbing alcohol followed by a spray of food grade calcium chloride. The old timer claimed it would increase the winter hardiness exponentially. Claimed it could be done again in the spring, two weeks before bloom to increase frost tolerance of flowers. Don't know if this really works. If it does, it probably lowers the freezing point of the sap, the same way urea does. Don't know what concentration calcium chloride the gent used. Potassium Dextrose Lactose (KDL) is a product specially manufactured to improve frost tolerance of blooms. Supposed to offer about 3 days protection. After that, it is metabolized by the plant/tree. Supposed to increase frost tolerance by up to 5F. I used some this spring, and recommend the lower of the two rates on the label. Even at the lower rate, it tended to want to burn the flowers a little, after a couple of sprays. On obtaining urea. You might try a local farmer's coop. Ours sells it by the 50# bag, or bulk. I've seen people use it as ice melt in a pinch (years ago) although I wouldn't recommend it. For fertilizer, it doesn't take much, it's 50% N. For an area of 100sqft., you'd only use about a 1/2 lb....See Morei use artificial plants outside & i like it!
Comments (14)>>> I usually use fake flowers (really el cheapos from walmart) in the fall. Ooooh I'll have to check out Walmart for fall flowers. I purchased the 12 geranium plants for $3.00/ea (with 25% coupon) and got the yellow potted plant for $7.50 after the 50% Michael's coupon. If I could keep live plants ALIVE and colorful then it would be worth it...but if I buy live plants then I'd likely have to replace them at least twice per season, every year. And that would be for summer and fall. That adds up, ya know?...See MoreRaccoons and Artificial Plants; Looking for Imitation Water Hyacinths
Comments (6)Well, I got my answer concerning raccoons and artificial water plants. It took them a few days, but finally the raccoons did their thing. The photo shows what's left of two of the four floating water lilies in the pond. The other two were untouched. A couple days ago, I added two dozen small feeder (gold) fish to the pond. Perhaps that's what excited the raccoons. They couldn't get the fish (too fast and too many places to hide), so they took out their frustration on the "plants"--maybe? Who knows what goes on in those little, but creative, brains. Bill...See MoreCan anyone identify this Artificial Tree
Comments (4)Because this is staged and because no plant is best grown in a pot with a narrower opening than the sides, this artificial tree could be a cut branch from a larger plant just for the photo shoot. Think florist with a good design sense. The growing conditions the plant was in before the photo shoot got that form, more than any light fluffing and pruning to make it camera ready. Because of all that, I would recommend going to a craft store like Micaels and looking at all the artificial greenery if you want to recreate this look. The fake stuff is pretty good these days and there are a lot of choices. Cataracts help....See Moregreenjewels
