? re: Mother-of-the-groom dress

My DD's son (my DGS) is getting married on May 1st.

This will not be a frou-frou wedding. It will be in a small, old rustic church, in the nearby mountain area; fifty or so friends and family.

My DGS and future DGDIL are 42-43 years old, and each was married and divorced in their early twenties. No children.

DGDIL has chosen a dress like the one in this pic. The top is white, bottom is black and floor length.

My DD is looking at a dress at Pennys. She asked me if I thought it would be okay, even though it is black. She would wear it with the jacket, toning down the black.

I told her I would ask the "authorities" at the KT.

What do you all think? Too much black for a wedding?

BTW, there will only be one attendant and a best man. I don't know what the attendant is wearing.

I think the dress would be just fine. My DS and DIL had a black and white wedding and both the brides mother and I wore black dresses. It was a beautiful wedding...with only black and white colors used in everything. It was very elegant!!!

It looks fine. The wedding is in May so a bit of floral is a nice touch. I would ask if the bride is carrying flowers or wearing a corsage so the pink flowers in the dress do not clash with the brides. For instance if the bride is going to carry a single red rose or Birds-of-Paradise.

I don't think the question is, "is this too much black?" A popular theme is to have a 'black and white' wedding nowdays. I would find out what the attendant is wearing and what the flower/accessory colors are for the bride.

Also consider that a solid color or tone-on-tone dress will be more photogenic in the picutres.

A bit of a different slant--Father of the groom shenanigans. When we got married, I bought my fiance a nice navy suit, which was quite the chore back in the day before there were lots of options for tall guys; he is/was 6'4" and 180 lbs. Anyway, I found a nice 3 piece suit in a conservative navy. My father had a nice suit in a conservative navy. I asked my future FIL to wear a nice suit in a conservative navy. At which point he went out and bought a nice suit in a conservative BROWN! I was sooooo angry at him, and since he was the best man I was convinced my dream wedding image for the guys was ruined. So, on our wedding day there was my FIL resplendent in his brown suit. I was still a tad miffed, right till we were all leaving the church and as we walked out the doors, he suddenly gave me the world's biggest hug, with the joyful comment 'now you're part of the family!' and the world's biggest smile to go along with it. He's gone now but thinking of that moment still makes me smile every time. It was a good lesson too about whats important and what's not on a wedding day. Geez, Louise. I just did this except I'm the grandmother of the bride. Nordstroms has a lot on their web site. Some are reasonable and some are ridiculous. We went to Northpark in Dallas (my poor youngest daughter) I found a skirt at Nordstroms for the rehearsal dinner, but I found what I was looking for at Dillards. We have a Dillards, but it's not as big as that one. They had plus sizes. Good luck. I've been the MOB twice and MOG twice and it's an ordeal. It's so frustrating I get to the point I dont even care what it costs, but I thought what I got at Dillards was reasonable. Not so at Nordstroms, but it was just perfect. Good luck. Nobody hates shopping more than I do. I told my daughter I had been dreading this shopping trip, and she said she had, too. LOL Glad when it was over. Now, just stuff for the showers and luncheons--that won't be as hard. Super good luck!!!

I would like a wedding coordinators opinion - is the following in bad taste? or am I too sensitive..my son was married a couple of months ago, i was seated in the back table at the reception, by the kitchen, and prevented from being in the photos. When I asked the wedding planner about pictures with the grooms family and the mother of the groom she said, not on the schedule! I was stunned. The night before he told me I was the best mother in the world, of course I had just deposited $10,000.00 in his account. A month before the wedding the bride sent me the dress she wanted me to wear, she got it for $50.00 off Amazon, she wore a $10,000.00 Vera Wang that my son bought for her. Now there are hundreds of pics online with her family - not one of me.. They re indignant that I dare feel bad because I was seated in the back and didn't get my picture taken, They tell me that it was THEIR day and I should just keep my mouth shut..I didn't see it coming, although the bride said before the wedding that she thought me, a single mother, and my sons were too close..well, she's just done a great job of breaking that up. why is she carrying flowers? I don't know what their ceremony was, but in a Jewish wedding, both parents walk both the bride and groom down the aisle. So both MOB and MOG have flowers. I never understood only the dad getting to walk the bride down the aisle. Both my parents walked me down the aisle, in both my weddings ;-), and mom had flowers. I walked my daughter down the aisle with her dad, and carried a small bouquet. Her dad and I are both remarried. My hubby and my ex's wife walked down the aisle together. And his wife also had a bouquet. All parents, and step parents, were involved in the ceremony. --- Along the same lines, I don't see having the mothers coordinate with the wedding party colors as telling guests what to wear. Again, parents are part of the ceremony, and of course in lots of pictures. They should match or at least not clash with the colors of the wedding if there are colors of the wedding. I certainly would not expect to tell guests who are not part of the ceremony what color to wear. I don't even understand the bride being offended if someone wears white. Why would I care if a guest was wearing white?

DD's bridesmaid dresses were black and I wore a black chiffon. I think your DD's dress is fine.

My rule about picking out an outfit for a special occasion is... when in doubt, don't.

It probably doesn't really matter how many of us tell her it is ok or not, if she has doubts about wearing black, she's probably going to feel self conscious in it, and it's not the best pick for her. Tell her to keep looking until she finds something she doesn't have any doubts about. She'll probably feel better in something else.

heck my friend's dd had a white cake with a lacy black icing design...

and i wore evening pants to ds2's wedding...and gauzy cotton ones to dd2's "beach" wedding...

So far the majority opinion is that the dress is fine.

I will ask about the color of the flowers and the attendant's dress.

I think the Penny's one is a lovely outfit and one that can be worn at many other occasions. Again the only question is about the flowers.
