New Leather Chair Arrived! (Now I wait for the Movers to Hoist)

My new leather chair has arrived. (Hancock & Moore, "The Sumptuous Chair," Piazza Mocha leather, Nottingham finish maple legs, and head-to-head, all-over A nails, and spring down cushion; $2600.) It would not fit up the stairs because of the fanned back and high legs, so I have to wait for the movers to come back and hoist it three stories from the front of my house, carry it across my roof to the back of the house, and drop it down to load in through my bathroom window and into the living room. A lot of hassle, but it'll be worth it once it's in. There's a reason this chair is called "The Sumptuous Chair"--it's incredibly comfortable. (Ignore that white thing sticking out of the cushion; it's the warranty/manufacture/inspection sign off sheets stuffed in there.)

Are the legs removable? I bet they can get it up with the legs off. It does look very nice and comfy!

Nope, the legs are built into the frame, and ordering the chair with removable legs was not an option (believe me, I tried).

Here's a ventilation trick for an OLD IT person. When you want to stack components and the idiot manufacturers put their ventilation holes on the tops or bottoms? Or you have very little space? Take a dry sponge and cut it into sections. (It's easier to cut when wet, though.) Use the pieces of sponge as "footers" for stacking your pieces. The nice thing is that sponge also absorbs black felt marker... Twist ties or they make a black plastic tubing thing that controls cords, too. Catalogs such as Harriet Carter sell them for very little, so don't pay much. But of course, I'd wait until you get the correct piece! ROTFL! That's something I'd do. But I'll bet they're both beautiful. :) Christine

Wodka: Yes, that is my family room. Thank you so much for your kind words! It has been a long, slow process to complete. We are tackling the house room by room actually item by item--VERY slowly since our budget is limited. I have a mix of hand-me-downs, vintage estate sale items, true antiques, and new furnishings. It is tempting to run out to one of the big box type stores just to "complete" the room but I know that I will be much more satisfied in the long run if I take the time to find one-of-a-kind, high quality items. It is frustrating to live in a hodge-podge while the process is going on but I am finally starting to feel like it will be worth it in the end. In the picture above, I have a table & chair plotted. I actually just ordered the chair today! I have waited over two years for that chair and have lived with a broken-down lazyboy that does not match anything in the room. The chair I ordered will be lovely & worth the wait - it is a Hancock & Moore piece. Sheesharee: That painting is one of my favorite items in our home. I found the painting at an antique store in the fall of 2006 and fell in love with it immediately! Everything was perfect including the hand-carved frame. I raved about it for the next few months and could not get it out of my mind. I was looking high and low for something "similar" but closer to a price that I was comfortable spending. When my husband presented it to me at Christmas that year, I was in tears! The scene reminds me of the area that my husband proposed to me at. My biggest disappointment in the room is the ottoman. I don't feel that the style or quality are quite "right" for the room but it serves a function for now. The ottoman was originally a soft leather in the perfect caramel tone. I guess that my pre-school daughter did not appreciate it - she colored all over it in permanent ink. I tried everything and could not get the stains out. It was an inexpensive piece to begin with (clubfurniture.com) so I hated to invest much in recovering the piece. The material that is now on it is a vinyl. I would love to have some decorations on it (maybe a tray, some books, etc) but with 2 preschoolers running around, items have trouble remaining on the ottoman.

I'm afraid I have to agree with most of the negatives. Watch them like hawks every inch of the way. When they pack, when they load, when they unload, and if you have them unpack (which I would never do.) We have moved (corporate and individually) long distance eight times since 1980, the last was three years ago California to Texas. As trailrunner said, each time was a new invention of us being wronged or cheated. I think sometimes it is just plain ignorance or not caring, but mostly cheating. Last move they were not careful packers at all and some beautiful leather books were just put in any which way so they got damaged, other things broken. I thought I had found such a good mover because he advertised himself as a "Christian" moving company, but Christian is as Christian does and he wasn't. Another company took all my obsessively-organized garage bins and mini-drawers full of everything from various sized nails, to all sorts of garage things, and to save space dumped them all into one big box, then stacked the boxes etc. on top of them. It took me a full time week to put them back in order. Be aware that you must insure for 100% replacement value or you will get very little for anything they break or lose. Be aware also that the loading end will likely be much different than the destination end. We have had a few moves where I loved the crew that packed and loaded. However, if it is more than a few hours away, they are going to hire a crew locally at the destination. That can be a disaster, as with our last move. I cannot even begin to tell you. They must have picked them up off the street, they were so inept, and frankly I began to be concerned that they were going to sue us because they started complaining about how heavy things were. I have also had individual members of the crew on both ends be rude and disrespectful and downright threatening to me (who am usually handling them alone while DH is at work). I think the best you can do is interview a lot of people and really grill them. Pick the one you feel the most comfortable with (and get reviews from other customers), then grill them again about WHO will be on the other end? Then call the other end and see if you feel comfortable with them. I'm convinced that a quick call to the company on the Texas end of our most recent move would have told me to stay away from the company I was about to use. Having said all that, we've survived all the bad experiences with ourselves intact, and the bad taste fades -- until someone asks your opinion about moving companies, LOL! :-)

"Rockmanor, did you go through a lot of rigmarole before you finally decided to live with your issues? Did you contact your retailer, or H&M directly?" I called & emailed the retailer (in another state) about two of the pieces. One was also soiled in delivery, and I did speak with the delivery service about that after calling the retailer. I emailed several photos of both pieces which I understand were shared with H&M. The most generous offer was to return one item to H&M for repair and wait approx. 8 - 12 weeks for its return. Given my prior experience with repairs by other furniture manufacturers that held little appeal, especially after being told that the other item's defect passed their standards and that there was no guaranty that the color would match exactly. I could not see the point in being inconvenienced by the pick up/delivery and loss of use for 2 - 3 months only to most likely be unhappy with their solution. In addition, I was lectured by the retailer about not handling the delivery issues properly. When a subsequent delivery was made (& I'd hoped to cancel that order, but was told it was too late), I attempted repeatedly to get the delivery crew to either wear gloves or wash hands - they refused. As it turned out, the problems with those items were not related to the delivery. Since it had been made clear that I was too picky before, I did not pursue remediation. Perhaps other people would not be bothered, but it bugs us.

Head chair for your new dining table???

Looks a chair you could really sink into! How long did it take to have that made? I'm getting a new leather sofa and haven't yet decided if I should break the bank with H&M. After seeing the detail and workmanship in this I am tempted. Do you mind if I ask what grade the leather you selected is. Did you take the pets into consideration when choosing (if you know your dog will be cozying up in it while you are gone, maybe yours are better disciplined than mine)

13 weeks. I believe it's a grade II (all of the Piazzas are the same grade; anything higher than II is not generally protected and will scratch/scuff easily). This is for my living room.

Beautiful workmanship and a real people magnet. It's begging for an ottoman, but your space probably has no room. Even a tiny round one would work --move it from a corner into position for your personal use.

Just curious... what does it cost to move your chair the way you described. I've really only seen that on HGTV -- cranes moving furniture; that sort of thing. Only true love could make someone do that. :-)

Likely $300-500. No cranes. Just three or four movers that tie straps to the chair and then pull it up to the third floor (using an extension ladder as a guide). And then dropping it down the back using the same process. It sounds more complicated than it is.

It's a casualty of this style of house. My entire third floor had to be moved in that way (with the exception of rugs, boxes of stuff, nightstands, and split box springs, etc.). Most of my second floor was moved in that way. But for those moves, they were able to just walk everything through to the back yard through the door in the kitchen. This chair, however, is such an awkward shape and size that it cannot get through the kitchen door to the patio. So it has to go up the front of the house first.

We ordered a H&M Austin sofa, sofa-sized Austin ottoman and Adirondack Rocker today. Cls 4 Capri Harness leather, Belgian Chocolate wood, A nails. Can hardly wait. I'm jealous that yours is "almost" in your house. We need lots of pictures of the hoist!

Can you repost the pictures you posted above? I can't see them. Also- you probably have posted it before, but what is the brand/color of your gorgeous blue paint?

Wow! Your chair is amazing and what a great price. I was on the HM site last evening and also Furniture land. The wait time is eight weeks. Can you tell me if HM is still made in NC?
