You could also take a piece of brown paper or cardboard and cut it to a rectangle the size of the back of the shelf to cover up the holes you aren't using.

i have the same set of glass boxes.

oh, also. once I get the tv and all the components right where I want them, I wind up the cables and tie them with twist ties and tuck them as neatly as possible inside the shelves or behind the tv stand.

Yes, haven't gotten to that. Twist ties seem so sophisticated. I usually tape mine somewhere on the back of the furniture with packing tape!

DH seems to think the DVD player and cable box shouldn't be on top of each other. Overheating potential or something? Or is he crazy?

Unfortunately in life perfection is hard to come by and those large holes would bug me also. If you really want to eliminate them you could buy some luan plywood, cut pieces to fit each space making holes for cords an appropriate smaller size, stain wood to match the unit, and use double-sided tape to attach to the inside back of each cubby. Wouldn't be difficult to do, no one would be the wiser, and it will no longer be something that annoys you.

on the bottom 2 shelves you could use baskets. Can you put "something" under the DVD player to raise it up a bit?

Well this is kind of funny. I don't know how long it would have taken me to notice this if I wasn't taking photos of these items! They were delivered 3 days ago. After taking these pictures and uploading them, I suddenly realized something -- this is the wrong TV console! They had two that were the same except that one has the plain sides, as this one does, and one has the mission-esque corbels on the side, which is the one we ordered! I double checked my order sheet and yes, they did order the correct piece, but somehow they delivered the wrong one. So I made a call and am waiting to hear back with the final verdict, but most likely they will be making us the correct console and delivering it, but meanwhile they're letting us keep this one. One more reason to be thankful for this forum, LOL. Had I not been showing off, who knows when I would have noticed?

Our cable box is stacked on top of the DVD player (cable box gets a little hot on top, DVD does not, that's how we chose how to stack.

Beautiful furniture. I completely understand about the large openings for the cords.
You need to get some wood, you have two choices, either
get some 1/4" plywood, it comes in different finishes
like oak, qs oak etc...cut strips high enough to
cover the top of the openings and cut the width to go
wall to wall in each opening...the other choice is to use
1 x 3 inch oak wood - cut 'wall to wall 'to fit over each opening.
FYI 1" wood is only 3/4" deep.

If you can't get QS oak, look for pieces that have no
dark cathederials running through it.
You then have to cut a hole for the wires to come through
position the holes behind the dvd etc...

stain with minwax oil based stain, try English Chestnut
mixed with Golden pecan. varnish with minwax poly.

Gee, all that cutting and staining of wood sounds like a lot of work. I actually just found a couple of square baskets (from our former tv console) that fit perfectly in the two bottom shelves, and I put the DVD player on top of an old leather 2" deep tray that happens to be the right size. Might not be the permanent solution but it works for now. Obviously not going to do anything to alter this console right now since we now know it's just here temporarily!

Love the bookcase. This type of furniture seems to suit your house - what I can see of it.

Instead of using twist ties, I only seem to ever have red or white ones, I bought some black velcro from Michaels to wrap up all our cords. It just seems to do a neater job.

The holes are there for a purpose. It's called ventilation. Don't block the holes.

What you can do is get some velcro or cable ties to bind the cables neatly so that they are not as visible.

The furniture looks nice. Funny about how you noticed the missing corbels. One thing I noticed on my Stickley TV console which was delivered in December (much smaller holes), was that the salesman told me the finish was "Onandaga" but the price tag had a code for a different finish "Centennial." I asked Stickley if there was a way to tell which was correct and they told me about a stamp on the back of the unit which has the code for the "Centennial" finish. Just some Stickley trivia for you.

I think the heat with stacking the two is a consideration.

Are the shelves adjustable? How about if you raise the top two up an inch or two for the components?

i would stack the 2 components if they fit (would look better than being stacked on a book, imo) and i would find baskets to fit the lower spaces... do you have a receiver or any other components to go in the other space?? if not, i might get a 3rd basket...

Here's a ventilation trick for an OLD IT person.

When you want to stack components and the idiot manufacturers put their ventilation holes on the tops or bottoms? Or you have very little space?

Take a dry sponge and cut it into sections. (It's easier to cut when wet, though.) Use the pieces of sponge as "footers" for stacking your pieces. The nice thing is that sponge also absorbs black felt marker...

Twist ties or they make a black plastic tubing thing that controls cords, too. Catalogs such as Harriet Carter sell them for very little, so don't pay much.

But of course, I'd wait until you get the correct piece! ROTFL! That's something I'd do. But I'll bet they're both beautiful. :)

Liz, the wall color is SW Blonde. This room has has a few wall colors, including Linen White and a pinkish color called Chippendale Rosetone, but this color has worked out the best. It's very easy to live with and works well with a lot of other colors.
