I certainly would do that if I could find turkeys at that price around here. The cheapest turkeys are ever on sale for around here is maybe $1.98 a pound. And that is just a run-of-the mill, mass-produced grocery store turkey. I have to pay anywhere from $3.50 to $4.00 a pound for a free range turkey from one of the local farms. I almost bought a half turkey breast yesterday. Just a small one about two pounds and they wanted $17.00 for it so I passed.

Instead I bought some turkey wings and they are on simmering for a pot of broth to make soup with.

I made a broth with my turkey carcass also ... the free-range turkeys here were over $70 dollars at my local grocer, not in my budget :) I bought a small Amish-raised bird, about 10 pounds, just enough leftover for soup.

I don't but I wish we had the butchering skills to do so! Good work and how cool you are cooking on the wood stove!

As Ann says turkey is so expensive here, I can't imagine .39 a pound! However you have given me a good idea, I think I'll cruise the grocery stores Dec 27th and see if the unsold fresh birds are on sale. You never know , might even get one at $1.50 a pound LOL

No sense even thinking about getting a really good one , on sale, from the butcher. You have to preorder from him and pay IN ADAVNCE!! Last one I ordered from him cost me over $90 so believe me everyone shows up for their turkey!

When they were on sale here before Thanksgiving for $5.99 (16 lbs. & under) $7.99 (16 lbs. & above) I thought about getting 2 and put one in the back freezer. It is just that we are not big turkey fans. Once a year seems to be enough so don't know when I would have cooked it.

I went up to the farmers' market yesterday and they had a couple of muscovy ducks at a great price that were special ordered but not picked up on Wednesday so I grabbed them up at the poultry man's cost.

I read this post a few minutes before heading out to the grocery store. I was just standing there staring at the fresh turkeys, when the butcher emerged and told me they were on sale for 59 cents per pound but he would mark one down to 39 cents if I would just walk away with it. So I did! I guess they're just desperate to get rid of the fresh turkeys...
