Question about working from home

Good morning to all. I have been seriously thinking about doing some work from home as a secretary/typist via the internet. I haven't posted my services yet but was wondering how I would go about getting paid for these services. I know what I want to charge per hour. IOW, how do I go about setting things up so I can be paid for my services? Hope I have made what I want clear to you. Thanks.

I would send them an invoice and have them pay through PayPal.

Hi Nanj! I'm so flattered our house made it into your idea folder! I'm going to go through my plans tonight and get some details for you. We started a year ago and some things are slipping my memory. We didn't work with the architects at Don Gardner. Our changes were so minor that our carpenter helped us draw them up and submit them with the building permit application. I would suggest that you print the elevation pictures and floor plans for both homes you're interested in and take them to an architect to get an idea on pricing. That way, you'll have an idea of what it would cost you to have a custom house plan drawn and you can then compare with DG. I'm familiar with both plans you're interested in and they are both lovely! I'm still going to follow up with you via e-mail about the cabinet layout. I did change the layout of the kitchen cabinets but not the footprint of the room. More to follow.....

Question About Baby Shower at Work

Thank you, all, for your opinions and comments. But, I guess I left out a detail or two when I originally posted... This is the couple's first child. I've sort of gotten stuck with helping with the shower, although I would prefer not to be involved other than to purchase a gift (which I've already done) and attend the shower. I'm also paying for the cake. All of us who are working on this would prefer that everyone be responsible for either purchasing their own gift, or organizing their own little group if they want to do a group gift. I've been tasked with designing the flyer -- which, to me, should simply say when and where the shower is being held, and that it's a baby boy (because that fact is known). But, several folks have already asked "who is collecting the money for a group gift," so I don't know if there's a way to avoid it altogether. And, in the past when someone has collected money for a group gift, no matter what the occasion, the flyer has always named the person who is collecting the money. And anyone who has worked there for at least a year (this coworker has been with us more than 10 years) knows that money is collected for group gifts, so having it on a flyer isn't going to be any big surprise. "I think putting up a flyer is tacky and I'd be embarrassed if I were the mother-to-be." It is quite common where I work for flyers to be put up announcing various events like retirement parties, birthday celebrations, etc. I really don't think anyone considers the flyers to be tacky. Yes, I have a concern whether saying anything about a minimum donation amount being tacky (which is why I started this thread)... But, those retirement party flyers all have menu choices and dollar amounts on them and something about how the money is for the food and gift for the honoree, and I've never heard anyone complain about them... And as I said a moment ago, the coworker has seen plenty of these flyers in the past 10 years. WildChild, I agree with everything you said. But, that still doesn't stop folks from asking who's collecting the money for a group gift... I think that I'm not going to put anything on the flyer about a group gift or donations; and when folks ask me "who's collecting the money" I'll just reply that if they want to go in with someone else on a gift that it's a fine idea, but they will need to discuss it with whomever they decide to go in with...

Thank you, Brad! I repotted the plants in dry porous mix. I did not see any white web like you described. While I usually hold off watering immediately after repotting. Your advice has now made me realise that for the last lot of plants I bought, I removed the soil from the roots by holding under running water and then potted them up at the end of the day as I was afraid the roots will dry up. Two of the plants ended up having root rot. I guess then using water to remove old soil from the roots is not best practice. Happy growing to you as well! :)

Hi Jack, It is definitely snowing and has been all day. Those seeds that I started two days ago are nearly all sprouting already. If I didn't know better I would say that some of those have germinate rates at 120% - HA! That caught me by surprise. I did not expect such a rapid emergence. I am not really so far behind though. In years past it was quite common for the ground to still be at least partially frozen by mid April. Can't work outside yet and this is actually my fourth flat for the garden. The earlier one for the hardy stuff has some lettuce with three leaves already with broccoli and napa not far behind. I need to do one more flat: the tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and basil. I expect to have beds ready by next weekend for outside seeds and the hardy transplants as soon as they are ready. I do not think tender transplants by mid May is too late, and the sweet potatoes by the first of June. I kinda went overboard with some 4 different types of lettuce, 4 or 5 of various colors of sprouting broccoli and three colors of cauliflower. The broccolini types intrigue me and the sprouting cauliflower also does. And the variation in colors ... I intend to treat my vegetable garden visually like a flower border with different colors, textures and heights. The biggest surprise is the size of the scallions that have wintered over for me again this year. They stand nearly knee high already and are as thick as small leeks. Originally they were scallions right off the supermarket shelf with roots attached. I just stuck em in the ground and away they went. Pardon the babble. We have stay at home orders here in Minnesota and my employer has ordered us to work from home; so I am for all practical purposes a shut-in and it is a drag!

Are you thinking that these jobs will be a one shot deal or are you looking for regular clientele? I own my own storefront business but I also work as a personal/executive assistant for a man/company. I keep an excel spreadsheet and invoice him monthly.

Hi: I'm really hoping to have regular clientele but if not, I'll take whatever comes along. Also, I would want to keep it as a payment due upon receipt of work. As this work would be done over the internet, that's what I am not sure about... what the procedure would be. BTW - thanks to all for helping me out.

Most employers would pay you as an independent contractor, on a 1099. This means that you are responsible for filing IRS tax forms related to self-employment income, and will have to pay 15% Social Security tax on the net income of your business.

I worked independently from home, and always had a contract from each company which spelled out the compensation rate and how and when I would be paid. I was always paid by check, and had a business checking account at my bank under my business name. You could specify payment as electronic transfer(direct deposit) to your business account, by giving them the routing bank name and account number. This would be spelled out in the contract. Many businesses prefer to make payments this way if the do their regular payroll by direct deposit.

My husband's cousin ( a female) did medical transcription at home for several years. At the same time, she was attending college part-time and taking care of her two sons. She finally got a bachelor's in education and now works full-time as a teacher. The medical transcription has ended, but she made decent money at it. I'm not sure how she was paid. She got her assignments from an agency.

I guess it depends on what the job is going to be. If you just want to do typing then the pay will be per piece and so paypal is a good way to go. If you want secretarial type work (typing, faxing, office 'errands' for a regular client then I would think that you will settle on an hourly wage and would submit a 'timecard' weekly. And at the end of the year the client will send you a 1099.

Or another scenario may be that you are retained on a project basis. Last year on of my regular agency clients retained me to handle an incentive program for him. We settled on a price and it worked out great for all involved. He paid me in 3 parts, when I started the project, halfway into it and them at completion.
