Hey Stacy, how about if you use a stick blender to puree the 'chunks' in your soups? He'll still be getting all good stuff in him.

Does he like scrambled eggs? Oatmeal? Mashed potatoes with gravy?

Shaun, I think he would freak out if he saw me putting the stick blender to his food...let's just say that the ladies at the nursing home have offered him "lunch" - as a joke - too many times...lol. he is so grossed out by it. I'll have to think about it - if there's any that that would work for without making it seem too "pureed"...:-)

For what it's worth - I use the stick blender in my chicken soup to puree the carrots/celery/onions. Then I add the noodles and put the chicken back in. You could leave the chicken out if it's too much for him to chew it. But he could still do the soft pasta and the broth.

My guys don't like veggies that much so they dont even know they're in the soup. And it's still soupy, not thick pureed at all.

It will hopefully be just a few days of pain before things adjust, I feel so sorry for the poor kid. Can you consider Pediasure? Other soft stuff might include a potato soup or maybe a cheese soup? Both could be thick and creamy without chunks.

Good luck and do stock up on Advil....

Six of my seven grandchildren have done the rubber band braces thing....some had a "head set" and one had a palate expander....so I am qualified to say "poor Will"....and to suggest cheese soup and other things with a very cheesy sauce on it.
However....I found that even a kid with "new metal" would eat amazing stuff if it was there....like nachoes and pizza, while things like grilled chicken and broccoli were way to hard to eat.

How about ground beef? (If Linda's theory is correct, LOL, and I'm sure it is) Nancy's spicy cheeseburger soup could work or this one (cook it really soft and mushy if you need to)

Hamburger Tomato Macaroni Soup

2 lb lean ground beef
1 cup diced carrot
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced celery
10 cups beef stock
1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
2 cups macaroni
salt
pepper

Brown hamburger and drain fat, season with s&p, add onion carrots and celery and cook for 10 minutes. Add beef stock and tomatoes, bring to a boil then simmer for 45 minutes, add macaroni and simmer 10 more minutes.

Awww, poor guy - here's my favorite potato soup recipe. I guess I'd be making cream of broccoli or cauliflower or whatever w/cheese, cream of chicken soup, quiche without the crust.

GINGER'S POTATO CHEESE SOUP

3 medium potatoes
2 cups boiling water
3 cups milk
2 TBL butter or margarine
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 TBL flour
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 cup grated Cheddar

Cook potatoes in boiling water. Drain almost all of the water out & mashe the potatoes coarsely. Add milk & heat to a simmer. Melt butter; add onion & simmer until onion is transparent. Add flour & seasonings. Combine w/potato mixture & simmer, stirring every 5 minutes. Add cheese & beat until smooth. Serve hot.

These things came to mind... soufle (sweet or savory), custards, stewed fruit, egg, tuna or chicken salad (in the food processor it will become very smooth), prune whip.

My sympathies to poor Will! How about Risotto? I don't have a recipe to share, but they sell some good looking boxed mixes at our local store.

Having been through 18 months of being on a soft diet due to broken jaw & extensive implant work I can speak with authority that rice pudding with lots of custard is easy to eat, contains protein, & has enough caloric content to make you feel like you've eaten. Pumpkin pudding also works well & has fiber. Non-fat yogurts were staples (ate several each day). Soup, soup, and more soup. Mac ' Cheese was too hard to eat so I'd scrap that idea!

Please give Will my condolences & tell him this too shall pass!

Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, meatballs, quiche, applesauce, fish, baked beans, pudding, cornbread, and pamper him with loads of icecream!!

My third son had a bad wisdom tooth extraction when he was a Jr. in high school. He was 6'6 and weighed 190lbs and was just ravenous. I think I made every smoothie known to mankind for a while. The funniest was after about four days and he could still barely get his mouth open, he took a Krispy Kreme doughnut, patted it down to a flat little pancake and fed flat little pieces of it into his slot of a mouth!

The potato cheese soup and the rice pudding sound good. Here is a recipe for another cheese soup that is delicious, and filling.

Duchess Soup (I usually half the recipe)

1/3 c butter
1 c each finely chopped carrots and celery
1 onion finely chopped
3/4 c all purpose flour
4 c each milk & chicken stock
1 Lb old cheddar cheese cubed (medium is fine)
1 chopped fresh parsley

In large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; cook carrots, celery and onion, stirring often, for 5 minutes or until softened. Sprinkle with flour; stir until blended. Pour in milk and stock; bring to a boil, whisking often. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, stirring for 10 to 15 minutes or until thickened. Stir in cheese until melted. Serve garnished with parsley. Makes 10 servings.

I can totally relate to Will's pain. I went to the orthodontist for 8 years and went through palate expanders, arches, full on braces (twice), chain rubber bands and a half dozen rubber bands between my top and bottom jaw. For about three days he'll feel like his teeth are going to fall out of his head, but it should be better soon. Just don't remind him that next month they'll probably increase the wire diameter and up the chain/rubber band strength on him. It's a little depressing to think about the next round of pain when you're in the middle of one! :)

The things I lived on in those days were milkshakes, smoothies, Campbell's chicken noodle soup, mashed potatoes, mom's potato soup, applesauce and macaroni and cheese. Just make sure everything is small enough to fit through a quarter inch gap (likely all he can manage at this point) and is very well cooked. Anything he'll have to chew more than once or twice is WAY too much. My mom also let me have some of her slim fast shakes, they were a treat at the time and gave me enough nutrition to get by without being too bad for me.

oh Bri, 8 years? You're the second person in the past 2 days to mention that length of time...ugh. youre menu sounds pretty similar to what we've come up with. I'll grab some canned soup today - so that at least DH and I can eat something normal while he has soup...

We did the same thing on Monday! Already had the rubber bands, but now we have them going from top to bottom on a diagonal across the front of her mouth in addition to the ones on the side. Needless to say that ortho appointment ended in tears and running out of the office. She says her tongue is being held prisoner, can't even wet her lips. We've had it all too, expanders, retainers, braces, bands, head gear...the end is near...Dec 16th!!!!

Fortunately for me after an Advil appetizer, she will eat anything soft

...how about small pasta with whatever sauce he might like...red, white, pizza, marinara with some parmesean? Pancakes always work here too, also grits, eggs, quick breads for the a.m., nuked waffles, instant breakfast (drink), hot cereal (cream of wheat, cream of rice, oatmeal), and, of course, there's always ice cream!!

Good luck and just keep thinking of that wonderful smile soon to be.

I'm too late to offer food suggestions, but I heartily support the ice cream theory, LOL. Heck, it's just a few days, let the poor kid enjoy SOMETHING! LOLOL Of course, he's not my kid, so I can say that.

Smoothies from yogurt and frozen berries come out a lot like ice cream and you can make them from bananas, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mango, a zillion choices and combinations, just freeze 'em. Healthier than ice cream but with a bit of honey or sugar, it's all good!

Ashley says to tell him that he can put a cookie in a glass of milk, then break it up with a spoon and it will be soggy enough to eat. Ahem.

Poor Will, give him my sympathy. And ice cream!

Ann, thank you - I know you have had to deal with a sore mouth at times, too. I took him a smoothie and mac and cheese again for lunch (thank goodness for the Annie's boxed stuff - he likes it and it's organic and natural...got to be better than the blue box for him...). I waited around to see him on his way to lunch and he said he thought he was feeling a bit better. One hurdle down, now we just have to get work on getting the blasted things in and out without ending up in tears of frustration.

Annie, too funny! Yesterday after school, he said he thought he could handle a couple choc chip cookies and when I looked in at him, that's exactly what he was doing - fishing them out of a big glass of milk with a spoon... You tell Ashley, to wait around a bit, this might be a match made in heaven!

And those smoothies are exactly what I've been doing - in fact I just got back from the store where I had to load up on more yogurt. Watch, he'll be sick of them, now that I'm stocked up. And I've been adding a tiny bit of real maple syrup...pretty good!

And, Stacy....remind him that the reason he's going through this misery now is so he doesn't HAVE to do it for 8 years when he's older!
I remember one grandson whth a mess of a mouth...criss crossed teeth and all sorts of bad stuff...in 4 months! FOUR he looked terrific! Now mind you he wasn't getting those things off yet....but the difference was amazing!
At the right stage of development, the teeth straighten out really fast!

Yes, crisscross from top to bottom on her front teeth. She looks like she has a spider web of spaghetti in her mouth whenever she talks. Yesterday on the way to school I warmed a scone for her to eat on the way to school...she had to break off pieces and poke it through the spaces between the bands, needless to say she gave up after 2 attempts.

She is 13. Been working on her mouth for sometime. This will be a great Christmas present if it happens on the 16th...one stinkin' millimeter!
