Small U shaped Kitchen layout, take 2
Comments (15)The fridge location in the OP is exactly like mine, across from the peninsula. I find it extremely convenient as a drop zone. What is your aisle width there? I have 46.5" from fridge door to counter edge, and DH can open the doors to look for something and another family member can still get by. That is with a french door fridge. I think this plan is just fine if you moved the sink under the window, and kept the DW where you have it. It just seems that a corner sink (as the only sink, I have a corner prep sink) is not the most comfortable if not absolutely necessary. I also agree with the 90* angle in the upper cabinet in the corner to match the lower. But, that is just a looks preference - plus I'm short and never get to things in the backs of those deep uppers....See MoreIs 20' wide too much for my U shaped kitchen?
Comments (67)One of our most fabulous layout experts, Rhome410, is great with zone layout. You've gotten some good advice here already from Liriodendron and oldtimecarpenter, but you might want to check out Rhome's blog. I'll link to her post about her kitchen and how its set up with zones. She also answers questions and you can email through her blog. She's busy with her 10 kids, construction project, and a DH's surgery this summer so hasn't checked in much. I know that she, too, would give you kindly advice to rework your appliance layout. Buehl is also great at explaining work zones, but I don't see her much anymore. I think she has some good info on the 'New to Kitchens' thread (usually on page 1) on zones. If you still have questions after all that reading, try posting a separate thread specifically titled to get guidance on zone setups. The title of this thread seems to indicate more about kitchen size than zones. My kitchen would have been a layout mess if not for the advice I received here from Rhome, Buehl, Lascatx, Bmorepanic, and so many others. After hundreds (not kidding) of hand drawn layouts (after the help of our house designer/draftsperson who I thought would have known better), I finally found one with zones in the right place. I've been using my kitchen for more than seven months, and its truly wonderful to work in. Sure, I could have gotten by with an OK layout, but when you've got a great one your kitchen is so easy to use because everything is exactly where it should be without walking all over the place and crossing zones. I encourage you to keep working to improve your layout. Here is a link that might be useful: Rhome's blog post on her kitchen zones...See MoreHelp me design my small U shaped kitchen!
Comments (32)Does the current sink share plumbing with a room behind the wall? If not you could make the kitchen a galley, with a stud bay pantry at the end. If there is space, you could even recess it into the other room. Having the wide, shallow pantry allows you to see everything stored there, at a glance. I drew a plan with separate cooktop and ovens, but you could still use a range. The cooktop is on the exterior wall for easy venting, and there are no uppers on that wall, to keep it open. There is an open shelf, also in the stud bay to the left of the hood, for oils and spices, and the narrow base cabinet at the end could store sheet pans and cutting boards. The window has been enlarged. If you leave a positive reveal on the sink, you can use a cutting board that fits over part of the sink, to extend the prep area. On the opposite wall I left the shelf for a MW, and extended it for cookbooks or other items....See Moreoutdated u-shape kitchen redesign in small space
Comments (39)I'm glad my idea was helpful to you! "my question is... the peninsula that gets extended towards the living room... how much space between the end of the counter and the wall/opening to living room do I need?" I did a rough estimate on aisles for you, based on the incomplete/inaccurate information you posted with your drawing. I estimated that the wall with pantry closet, fridge and desk at 115" based on where it ends in relationship to the peninsula. Your measurements list that as less than 8' but the desk ends beyond the peninsula - approx where the window starts? - so I'm guessing that wall is closer to the distance between top right corner and nook window. Anyhoo, here's an updated drawing based on that assumption. I recommend that you put a trash pull-out under your sink. You'll need to go with a single bowl, off-set drain sink and watch the overall depth but it can be done. Here's mine: I shifted the fridge towards the peninsula so that there's counter within 48" of the fridge. MW goes on a counter in the pantry: Hopefully the above amended drawing is enough to get you started. Tweak it as needed to suit your needs....See More- 13 years ago
