Small U shaped Kitchen layout, take 2
Comments (15)The fridge location in the OP is exactly like mine, across from the peninsula. I find it extremely convenient as a drop zone. What is your aisle width there? I have 46.5" from fridge door to counter edge, and DH can open the doors to look for something and another family member can still get by. That is with a french door fridge. I think this plan is just fine if you moved the sink under the window, and kept the DW where you have it. It just seems that a corner sink (as the only sink, I have a corner prep sink) is not the most comfortable if not absolutely necessary. I also agree with the 90* angle in the upper cabinet in the corner to match the lower. But, that is just a looks preference - plus I'm short and never get to things in the backs of those deep uppers....See MoreSmall U shape kitchen w/island dilemma?
Comments (6)Your kitchen looks about like mine as except we had the dreaded overhanging cabinets. The open floor space between the cabinets was about 6 feet. The peninsula was 8 foot long with about 52 inches of walk space between the wall. Our fridge was at the end of the wall opposite the peninsula. Sink was in the same place, no DW in original kitchen (It was facing the dining area where your cabinet is at the wall). Our peninsula had useless 12 inch cabinets with a 12 inch overhang for seating. The total counter was 26 inches wide. I hated always having to walk around the peninsula even when not emptying the DW on the wrong side of things. We took out the peninsula & added a 2 by 4 foot island with a 3 by 4 foot top. We have two seats and there is lots of room width wise and an 11 inch overhang. Our previous bar had a 12 inch overhang at counter height which is said to be a no-no on this board. We used it for 28 years and never had a problem. We now have a 37 inch walk thru between the DW & new island & a 42 inch walk through towards the wall. They both work fine for us. Our island runs the same way the peninsula did before. It sound like you are running it the other way, which we considered. We added 10 inches in width with the new island, most of which went into the 6 foot open space in the kitchen. We still have 52 inches between the fridge & the island, which is plenty. Our space between the counter stools & the dining chairs is what it was before, 40 (?) inches. All works well compared to my previous set up. I'm not sure where you fridge is, opposite the sink? Just wanted to say 2 traffic patterns work here much better than I hoped. If the way you are thinking doesn't work, have you considered running the island the same way as the peninsula was? Hope something here helps....See MoreWhere can I get better seating in this small U shaped kitchen?
Comments (2)round pedestal table will be easier , not necessarily more capacity. When we visited one grandma as kids they used a drop leaf table in living room for more capacity than the kitchen table , as it was a small home . when we left , table went back against the wall, and leaf placed down. is there an end of the living room than can be "flex" dining space? long and narrow farmhouse or trestle table right in the middle of the space shown will allow a bench on one side w small people using that and chairs on the other side: that sort of table can be found or have built fairly long and narrow to your specs. Let's dare ask? How many seated people must she entertain? Maybe best is to get food and seated people setup in the other room[living room or family room] and adjust to that with the way of serving that she can realistically do....See MoreSmall kitchen - U shape or Galley? Help
Comments (13)I have a small u-shaped kitchen. I prefer it over a galley, because I don't like the way the end wall looks in a galley and I like the proportions of a U better than the long hallway claustrophobic look of a galley. My kitchen has the window, sink and fridge on one leg of the U which is a longer run than the range wall on the opposite leg. I do all my prepping at the back of the U, which gives me lots of continuous counter space between the sink and the range. The advantage of a galley is that there are no corner cabinets to contend with, cheaper cabinet costs and likely no countertop seaming issues. I think small kitchens are cramped regardless if it is U-shaped or galley. Since I prep at the back of the kitchen, another person can utilize all the other parts of the kitchen....See Moremyexecutiveranch
