I am NOT a Super-Mom!!

I take my child to daycare because I work Full-Time. They always put these events on that I can't attend because I am working. That is the whole idea of daycare. I can have care for my child and still work. I get to as many as I can but it is impossible to go to them all. Some of the events they do are on Saturdays when the daycare is closed and my husband and I also work weekends. We are in the retail business. Thats our busiest time. They always want us to bring in snacks for things they are doing. I'm sorry but by the time I get home, get us fed, spend some time with my daughter before it's time to get her ready for bed a 8pm and myself ready for work the next day, does'nt leave an aweful long time at night to whip something up. Half the time I don't even remember to buy snacks to bring because I always have soo much other stuff on my mind! Sometimes I feel like the other parents who are the "super-parents" look down on my husband and I. I'm sorry but the only thing I care about is that my daughter is safe and taken care of when I'm not around and that she grows up to be a good human-being and kind-hearted to other people. Sometimes I feel these other parents are looking down thier noses at us. They make me feel like I love my child less. I don't know. Maybe I'm just having a bad day because I do have to miss alot and I see they don't. Thanks for letting me vent!!

Few things/ideas here:

1. Buy don't make treats. Have that grocery list on the fridge and put the treat on the list (or always have one on hand so you can grab it in the mornign when you go SHOOT I NEED A TREAT TODAY..makes you look organized!!!

2. Outside looks are not what inside households are. The households that look perfect can have wife beaters and alcholoics in them.

3. Who cares what others think, it's what you feel about you child that counts!!! NEVER FORGET THIS ONE!!!

All of this comes from the mother that bought treats rarely if ever made them, had the "perfect family" from the outside, only my best friends knew about the struggles I had with drug abuse my daughter went through, etc. and finally learned to not care about what others thought (okay I always cared what my best friends thought, but they knew, and understood!!!)

Thanks. It's nice to know that I'm not alone. I just sometimes think Parents read to many Parenting Magazines. I parent from the heart. I use my own judement, not what the so called "experts" say I should do with my child. I'm not trying to be the best, I know I'll make mistakes and in turn, that will teach my daughter that it's alright not to be perfect. Everyone is suppose to be diffrent or we would be a world of robots. I'm not a Stepford Wife even though it seems more and more women are striving for that.

Little trick to find them. They glow under blacklights. If you can get a portable blacklight, you can find them much easier. Also, if you have good hearing, you can hear them munch as they are quite loud when eating.

Sue, Sorry I am late to this celebration but I happened on this thread as I was searching for an update on your dining room to library transformation. I was so thrilled to hear that your son graduated, got such high praise for his film shorts and is heading off to Hampshire in the fall. I have followed your posts over the years and I was really hoping Hampshire would be a good fit for him. From the start, I had a strong gut feeling about your son and I think he's on a path to an exciting future. Your family is beautiful-- and I can't believe the girls aren't noticing your sons! All I can say is that I sure didnt know what I was looking for when I was in my teens. Those girls will wake up one day! A son who wants to take his mother out to lunch is going to be a great mate! snork! My brother & I once had to share dishwashing duty. He had to turn his face upward to look down his nose at me, but he did it, & pronounced that washing dishes was women's work & I'd have to do it all. Luckily, my mother heard him & straightened that out. Then he decided that the way to get out of washing dishes was to be very very bad at it, so he put dishes into the rack with crusted-on food, put forks in the drawers with spaghetti stuck to the tines, broke a few dishes. didn't work. (I do like the idea of the cape.)

It sounds like you just need to vent and have a place you can do that w/o being judged. I'm happy to listen if you need a friend (vistajpdf@aol.com). I'm also a stepmom to 3 kids in their 20's and I have MANY days when I am very resentful of them and their mother, who has been basically no help in any way. So, I do understand where you're coming from. Like you, I have 3 little boys who need me and since my adult stepdd moved in after Thanksgiving (I housed her brother for years in the late 90's, early 00's), I often feel, "I didn't sign up for THIS!" So, I do feel for you. You know you can't turn your back on this boy and deep down, I hope you don't really want to. Kids can have a drug-abusing, physically abusive prostitute for a mother, whom they will call for in the middle of the night for some strange reason. You and I know it takes more to being a mom than just giving birth, but to kids, even the worst mother is still a mother. You may not have PPD (though women do have 80 times the normal levels of estrogen after delivering a baby), but my guess is that your sleep-deprived w/ a newborn and a preschooler running around. (DMD degree from Univ. of FL, '91, lol) I'm also still in a state of sleep deprivation and my boys are nearly 3, 5, and 7. If I had a depressed adolscent on my hands, I'm thinking I would be the one headed for the looney bin. Take help if anyone's offering - your family, your husband's family a friend or neighbor and take a few hours for yourself - even if what you really need is just a long nap. You'll be more patient and clear headed if you're better rested. Secondly, regardless of what it takes, you could all use some counseling during this difficult time of adjustment. I've heard that finding a good therapist is like finding a good husband. You have to kiss a lot of toads, lol. Keep looking, get referrals from a trusted physician or friend and get help for your ss and yourself. It sounds like you're a lot like me and just venting to a forum, writing down thoughts, etc, helps. But, sharing it with a trained professional (once you find the right one) could be priceless. Be direct - men, and certainly that includes boys, are not mindreaders. Sometimes I expect my husband and my SD to "see" the things I see as far as cleaning up goes. They don't. Be very specific and say, "It would really help me if this became your job." Hopefully he can grow to help you and you can use the help. Good luck, Dana

Maybe it's time to find a new day care. It seems like that one is not a good fit for you, or your daughter. It sounds more like a nursery school for the elite, especially since they are critical of your daughter's "attitude", and their expectations, that, despite your job, you'll be there when they summon you.

Maybe you can find a smaller, family day care would be better. You might be able to find one that nurtures her independent spirit.

I'd suggest another daycare too.

When my oldest child was 5 mo, his daycare wanted me to pay $10 and take a day off work so he could see "Big Bird on Ice." That was the last straw for me. I didn't like other things going on there. I pulled my child out on Monday and never went back to get his stuff.

The last daycare was a church school and daycare. THey asked for things like two bags of candy for the Harvest Festival and had various fundraisers. I had a two income household and only one child at that time. I didn't mind contributing a little if it meant that my child could have better care. The people always went out of their way for us. I tried to do what I could for them.

My point to all of this is that if this place isn't working for your family, find another place.
