bamboo floors .... what's your opinion pics please!

We are planning on bamboo flooring for our sunroom which joins our kitchen. We have a boxer that is very active, however not rough on our current oak floors. We keep her nails trip and smooth, should I be concerned about scrathing? Does anyone have picture of their bamboo flooring? I'm leaning towards strand bamboo in Kobra.

My sister in law has bamboo through her house. It's beautiful, but it does scratch easily. It's just her,no kids, no dogs. I love the environmentally friendly side of it and the look of it, but I would caution about the scratches.

That's what I'm most concerned about. I have a sample and have used a fork to scratch. It does show the scratches, but I'm able to wipe them clean. Not sure if I want to be constantly wiping them down.

suzatwork: i have to say your floors have very much the same grain and variation in tone as my highly-coveted black walnut. they're stunning! i'm wondering how they take stain, since i'd like darker floors? my plan is to go with the walnut but i'll have to get some samples and check the amendoim out. i'll have to look it up, but also assuming this species would be harder than walnut... hmmm... GREAT! more for me to think about! thanks for posting your gorgeous floors.

postum, thank you for the link for the curtains. I also like the fuller and higher panels I believe. I'm glad you like how my room is coming together. I'll get a pic of the artwork above the fireplace and post it for you. mclarke, privacy isn't a major factor there, only sun. jgabm, what beautiful framework around your window! Thanks for posting it. palimpsest, I really like the first room I posted, but the WTs hung below the arches seems to give it more of a chopped up look to me. I personally think I like the look of the higher hung panels for my space.

Hi jnh896, I usually get a 3' by 24' poster board and paint it fully with 2 coats of the color I am considering. You can buy a sample size at most paint stores now. Paint 1 board for each sample. When dry, you can carry the large board around the room in different lights. You can better choose then. Never select colors from small swatches. Good luck! Hi jeri, I have not talked with the installer yet on my decision in no longer gluing the floor but floating it. My neighbor has a floated 5"" wide Merbau hardwood floor and I like the way it feels when I walk on it. It has no hollow sound and feels solid but has a tiny bit if cushion so it does not feel like I am walking on my hard tiles in my two foyer areas. My other neighbor's very dark 5" wide plank floor feels very hard to walk on since it was glued. I am hoping my installer agrees with me and feels it is OK to float the 5" wide Triangulo Engineered 1/2" thick with a 3 MM sawn cut veneer of Brazilian Cherry on top floor ( have a concrete floor and installing a sub-floor would cause problems in my door ways and raise my floor much higher than my Porcelain Tile foyers so I decided to go with an engineered wood floor that has a sawn cut veneer). I just hope I can refinish it if I ever need to since BR-111 says you can refinish the floor a few times and I am hoping the floating installation does not affect this.

I don't have direct experience with bamboo floors , though I REALLY wanted to use them in our kitchen. Our GC and the people I talked to at flooring stores talked me out of it--said it is too soft. (We have two dogs...)

Recall some information that the lightest colored bamboo is the hardest and dark is the softest.

we have it throughout the great room. the bamboo is very hard, it's the finish that is soft and scratchable. it won't really dent, but the finish will scratch like crazy.

fallingwaters - do you have any pictures you can show? Do the scratch marks come out after much cleaning? Or are they deep scratches that don't come out?

Horizontal and Vertical Bamboo is very soft. However, the Strand Woven Bamboo is at the very top of the Janka hardness scale. I would definitely recommend that you look at this type for beauty as well as durability. :-)

I had carbonized strand by Dragonfly put in in December. The coloring was more varigated than I expected. Very happy with the durability. No scratches as yet and the little dog regularly tears around the place.

There is a lot of poor quality bamboo out there. Some factors to consider re durability are the type or process (strand being the hardest), the age of the bamboo at harvest (3-4 years or older is better), the flooring makeup (solid vs. a thin layer over a substrate) and the finish.

With a lousy finish, it will soon look bad regardless of the other factors.

celticmoon - love your floors! They look so beautiful.

We are looking at the strand and the pricing is on the higher end. I understand the quality is one of the better bamboo's out there.

I see so many online advertisements regarding the durability with heavy flow traffic including kids and dogs. I'm hoping we'll be happy with our choice.
