Depends on who you ask which is better.

I prefer BM-satin Impervo, and then SW-Pro classic.

Havent' had the opportunity to use Muralo ultra waterborne- so can't compare. I hear it is excellent though. May get the opportunity before long.

One painter in my area only uses Porter- says it is better than ____

So, depends on who has used them a lot , their experiences, etc. I would say right off , you are going to get michael to rave about muralo. Just can't compare, but I would trust his opinion.

Only one place in your area I notice carries it, and they didn't have it in the semi-gloss finish.

SW told me the Pro Classic cannot be done in dark colors like Turkish Coffee of Black Bean - so he said I needed to use All Surface.

Plus, my other issue is a want a high gloss, not a semi-gloss.

BM store just told me Impervo is oil actually and Impervex is the latex version. He said I would need to add floetol to is to get it to lay down more like oil. But he said I can do it in a dark color at least.

The Porter pain store said yes he could do advantage 900 in a dark high gloss...he didn't say if I needed floetrol in it or not.

I just talked with the local Harware store that sells SOME of the Muralo line....the didn't sound too knowledgeable about the line. He said they have the waterborne acryic. Is that the same as the Ultra waterborne?

BTW, This harwarde store - 704-333-3133 said they did have the Muralo high gloss trim waterborne...but in the can onthe web site it is a black can with a gold label and purple writing. He said his can is white with green writing but that is was the same product. He said he could "most likely" tint to the dark SW Turkish Coffee color I want. His hesitation and seemingly lack of knowledge worries me.

If the painters say I need a minimum of 3 coats of these dark colors...does that mean I need a dark primer first and then 2 coats or a dark primer and 3 coats?

My dark trim colors are Turkish Coffe SW6076, Black bean SW6006, French Roast, and Terra Burn SW6048.

Write now all the molding, doors, everything getting this dark trim is only "builder primed". I asked them not to put on the standard white semi so the painters wouldn't have to compete with a glossy surface area. I thought that would help improve adhesion. I retrospect that white gloss may have been sanded and acted as a primer?

satin impervo- # 314- and yes you can go dark with the impervo, ; they might want to use a little floetrol, but if they are painters they should be fine with the impervo as is; however I do know painters that do use a flow extender to help ; just a little wont' and don't hurt the leveling of this paint; your painter should know all about these things if he/she paints very much.
and yes it is doubtful on the proclassic- I have never done a deep trim with pro classic- so I can't answer , only light trim colors. same with porter- the painter I know who uses it- only does light trims also.

The muralo ultra waterborne -yeah that is what the website is saying as the colors for the particular trim sheen you want; however I haven't used muralo yet- so I can't advise to this one.
Maybe michael will see this and chime in. I think he is a muralo man.

BM rep told me Impervo is OIL not latex. He said Impervex if the water form of oil Impervo. But I see by your link he is incorrect. Although I do want a high gloss and don't see where the Impervo latex comes in high gloss. I am doing satin on my walls, so I want the sheen contrast.

Do painters really apply high gloss latex paints with brushes?

I know since I am a painter, it may seem like a silly question but I'm serious!

Are your estimators questioning your decision to go with high gloss latex in those dark colors?

I don't work with high gloss much and haven't for a few years. The demand for it is low because semi-gloss seems to be shiny enough. But from my experience with it I do remember that it pulls and drags even with extender and it covers very poorly. Something about the high sheen level in a latex paint makes it not user friendly at all. Things may be different though since last I used it. Perhaps there is a high gloss latex on the market that can be brushed with ease. I hope you can get some opinions from painters who use high gloss a lot though...I don't know where those guys could be.

Thank you for your post. Are you talking about the satin impervo for trim? I thought everyone used semi-gloss or high gloss for trim these days?

Well, honestly most said they used Semi-gloss, but no one really gave me an "are you crazy" look. I thought since my walls will be satin that the gloss would be a nice contrast, especially in a rich dark brown. Do you think that is will look bad?
I was thinking a high gloss would have even less brush strokes then a semi - just like a clear high gloss of nail polish does. I've never tried it though.

I also read somewhere that someone recommended doing flat and then covering it in a high gloss clear. Sounds like more work for the painter though?

I will guess that half the people use satin for trim and the other half use semi gloss. BM Waterborne Satin Impervo was invented for trim to be a counterpart to the oil based Satin Impervo which was/is a very popular trim paint.

Remember that trim is going to stand out from your walls no matter what because it is trim. I'm not sure you need to make it high gloss in order for you to see that contrast compared to your satin walls. Semi gloss is pretty shiny too IMO. That may be enough contrast.

I like what paintguy is saying; I have only went up to semi-gloss and that is pretty shiny especially in a waterborne acrylic. This should give you a nice smooth silky baby butt feel, even a satin makes a nice finish. Most of my customers are either satin or semi- .

I would also have to come in on the Semi-Gloss side.
Nicely applied, 2 coats on a smooth primer should look great!

Hi-gloss...hmmm...all you see is reflection, not the color...but that's just me!

OK, if I go with semi the SW rep told me to use the "Metal Latex" over the dark primer. Is that good stuff?
The BM impervo doesn't come in Semi right? So in order to get the impervo's smooth oil-like finish I have to go with satin sheen or choose another trim paint?
Does anyone just use the type of paint they used on the wall, but in a higher sheen? I'm using SW Duration Home in satin on the walls...so could I just use that in the semi gloss on the trim? Or will it REALY not smooth out enough?

For Turkish Coffee the painter said 3 coats, not the normal 2. Is he talking 3 on top of the primer then if everyone primes first??? He didn't clarify, but some of the cheaper estimators said 2 coats. (I made the dumb assumption primers were a given and weren't counted when they were talking about how many coats)

HUbby and I are hearing you all and think Semi will be fine, but now if the Impervo doesn't come in Semi, which will give me an oil like finish, brushed on.
Oh and the painter says to spray all the smooth doors but the brush the casing, trim, molding ect. Will that look ok?
Wish BM impervo just made the semi, then the decision would be made.

Yes, spraying the doors and brushing the trim is a great plan.

Yes, BM Satin Impervo only comes in satin. BM has other products that are higher sheen, but IMO, they are the worst paints BM makes (Aqua Glo and Aqua Pearl).

If a painter tells you 3 coats he probably means 3 coats of finish. The primer would be an additional step. That does make sense to me though....covering a white primer with a dark trim color would be tough to do in 2 coats. You are probably going to need 3 for complete coverage.
