The landscape is so lovely with the hills behind and you have a nice looking side patio. You should think about how you use it: who comes in the front door? how often do you use the side patio? How is the back slider used and the back door? Would you cut flowers or would you rather have something you don’t need to spend a lot of time tending? Do your children need a play area? Do you have a big dog or a smaller one — is the dog out all day or periodically? Will you ever have horses or other larger animals?

I would stick with all lap siding. The house has a nice horizontal feel to it and adding board and batten will fight with the horizontal feel of the house. And adding shakes will cut the house making it feel more squat. It's a cute house. Don't try and make it something it isn't. I'd play up the porch and entryway and tone down the garage by making the garage door the same color as you choose for the house. Definitely go with Hardie.

I am a craftsman lover and my new build is craftman inspired. We did a sage green color with wood accents, which is very different from what you were considering. I think your house would look great in white and black with maybe a fun colored front door, but I think it might look a little more "modern farmhouse" than like your inspiration pic. Here is a pic near me that reminds me a little of your house, but obviously different, but I really love this house when I drive by it all the time.
