We are renovating a 75 year old home and need some help with the exterior. Currently vinyl and will be replacing with either LP or Hardie (open to suggestions if you have them!).

We will do lap siding on majority of the house and then would like to add in either B&B or Shakes to accent. This is where I need your advice - where to add the shakes/B&B!

Looking to do white siding and accent with some light wood (e.g. front door, posts on porch, any window planters etc).

Please post additional views of the house including sides and back. Are you replacing the roof? If not, you need to remember that that is a strong color that makes up a significant part of the exterior appearance.

Here are some additional views.
- we are adding an addition to second story in back of house.
- roof is staying (for now) and could envision a black roof down the road…

The current color goes very well with your roof. Here's a house with a similar palette that looks great: You should leave it and spend your budget time on other things: --Replace white pillar with dark, beefy wood pillar in roof color. --Paint front door light turquoise or yellow. --Get profeessional landscaping with an emphasis on deep rounded foundation beds across the entire front of the house (but not too close) a mix of everygreen and deciduous shrubs, grasses, dark brown mulch, pernennials. Break up the lawn with an island or a tree set into a wide round bed. with some hardscaping, dark mulch to echo roof. Lawn needes edging along the driveway. If you have the budget, gray and brown slate curved walkway from the garage would create a garden bed on the front of the house. You need a landscape designer for sure.

What is the age of the house? I am thinking 1910ish plus/minus. A big window like that was meant to impress because plate glass was a big deal. Do you think it may have had some leaded glass in it at one time? Here is a much more modest c.1910 classical revival house with overscaled Palladian window and here although there are divisions in the windows, they are painted dark to emphasize the glass area rather than the divisions.

What I see ... a tract builder interpretation of a modern prairie style home or a basic hip roofed colonial circa 2000 with "modern" windows. What style were you going for? Did you use an architect? What does "modern feel" mean to you?

If the roof will be brown for awhile, I’m not sure white is the best choice for siding. Since you’re adding a roofed area to the home, maybe you should bite the bullet and put on black shingles now. That would look so much better with white siding.

I would stick with all lap siding. The house has a nice horizontal feel to it and adding board and batten will fight with the horizontal feel of the house.

And adding shakes will cut the house making it feel more squat. It's a cute house. Don't try and make it something it isn't. I'd play up the porch and entryway and tone down the garage by making the garage door the same color as you choose for the house.

Definitely go with Hardie.

While I think a black roof would be best with white siding, it’s not possible at this time. I was looking for white siding with a brown roof and liked this example.

Thanks cpartist! Good advice on the siding and we are definitely getting rid of that garage door and will get one that matches the siding.

If you want to do white, pick a soft white so it's not so stark.

Personally I could see the house in a gray/blue or a soft gray/green.

Can I see a closer photo of the porch?

Do those two posts do anything? Right now they are way undersized but also look off on either side of the top of the stairs.

Choose a door color that says welcome to my house. And then yes, furniture and maybe a pretty outdoor rug.

Here are two views that hopefully help. We are moving the stairs to the right (to align with the door bump out. The two small posts will get replaced by one bigger post in the middle (see amateur mock-up below :)

We are now considering changing the roof as well. What color would you recommend with arctic white siding? Will likely be GAF timberline HDZ shingles. charcoal? Appalachian sky?
