Sorting out 84 y.o. poorly-painted trim for repainting nicely

Hi everybody, this looks like a really helpful forum. Could I get a suggestion about how to improve the trim in my old house kitchen? It has been several colors (pink! blue!) and I think has been painted with oil at some time as the use of a little bit of heat from a heat gun causes sheets to peel off, but not down to the bare wood---possibly there was an adhesion problem in the late 1960s or something.

Also, the inside edges of the trim weren't done very well, meaning there's an air bubble that can be cracked. Makes for a very chunky finish.

Am looking to sort out/smooth the trim and then paint it. Have been using a hot air gun, but it leaves a gooey mess behind that likely will have to be sanded. Am I better off using a stripper? Sanding? Am a bit nervous to sand as it's surely lead somewhere in there.

Any advice? Thanks for your time!

Erin
