It's a counter-height table in solid maple, cuz I wanted to be able to use the same chairs at peninsula as at table (short on space).

I'd love to see as well. Last night we put our old kitchen table into the kitchen (white and blonde farmers table from 1993) and we both went BWHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA...it looked like such crap, so we immediately disassembled it and put it in the basement. I couldn't stand it.

so now I"m on the search for one too.

Thank you all for your postings and advice. Here's what I ended up ordering today:

I don't have a pic of the table but it is double pedestal table with an oval top. The size is 76 by 42 inches. They will custom match it to my perimeter cabinets. It is from a company called Zimmerman Chair and Old World Heirlooms.

I also ordered 6 Nichols and Stone side chairs with a black, lightly distressed finish. I ordered the chairs with a fabric bottom that will have the insured Guardian protection. I also know that I will most likely have to change the fabric on some of the chairs sooner than later, if the Guardian protection doesn't work, I can always use it as a chance to do light redecorating. Here's the style of chair I ordered:

Hopefully, I will be as excited about them in about 8 weeks as I am today.

I too saw my old table in the room and thought, "No way...". I mean, it was alright, but I had already spotted one a better size and design so... yup. I splurged (well, "splurge" by my standards is anybody else's "scrimp", but I went ahead and got it)

In any case, we got this table (seriously onsale, which made it even nicer).

It's even prettier in person, and those breadboard leaves just slide under so I don't have to worry about storing them (it's at maximum size in the photo - both ends "disappear" when you stored them underneath); in our small space this is a huge boon. It's just the right size, colour and proportion for our teeny DR and we love it.

I may get new chairs in time, but we're currently using our old ones which are antique oak ladderbacks with wicker seat (they were my grandmother's). They don't match, but that makes it all the more real "farmhouse", right? (My story and I'm sticking to it!)

All the tables and chairs are gorgeous! Would have any of them in my kitchen!

chipshot--how hard is it to keep your fabric seats clean? Is it treated?

I was looking for a 48" round with a base that would allow 5 chairs to fit without hitting a leg. Yours seems to be perfect.

I don't recall where we got the table (which we call the "elephant foot table" because DD loves pachyderms). I'll have to check our records. The table actually has a leaf that allows it to seat six comfortably. We've got eight of those chairs and shift them from the table-height island and desk to the table when necessary.

I had a granite table top made from the leftover slab used on our counters. I purchased the metal table stand online.

For this house, we "designed" a dining room table and chairs from a company called Canadel. We chose the tabletop, the pedestal, the finish, the chair seats and backs, etc, from their component pieces . . . and then it was custom made for us. We've absolutely loved it, had lots of compliments, and have been pleased with the way it's held up. Unfortunately, in the negotiations for the sale of the house, the buyers asked for it to be included with the house. Because it matches the peninsula barstools, it was a legit request, but when my DH said okay, I wasn't happy. However, the style won't really go with the new house, so it's probably for the best . . . We plan to go back to Canadel and do the whole process over again for the new house, for both the breakfast table and the dining room set.

tobokat, I looked for the name of the table manufacturer but couldn't find it. I did learn that we purchased the table (which is called the Hippo Table) from Holly Hunt in Chicago. I hope that helps.

While we're talking tables, has anyone seen an adjustable-height square or round table that can double as a coffee/conversation table and card table? I've got the perfect spot for just such a thing.
