Window down to counter, no bump, design option feedback
Comments (11)Would it be possible to put in a bow window? That would make the middle of the window where the faucet is a few inches deeper - enough to protect the window from splashes and the sill from crumbs, etc. But, I doubt you'll be able to open it...but I'm not sure as I don't know much about bow windows. The other possibility is to have the window just an inch or so off the counter and trim it w/corner round or other small trim. It would keep the "window to the counter" effect while still raising it a tad off the counter and perhaps be less prone to collecting "gunk". It probably won't help with the splashing though. Is it possible to add a 6" bump-out? Something like MamaDadaPaige's or ErikaNH's windows in the threads linked below. They also offer some architectural interest to the outside of the house...assuming it fits the house (or see what you can do to make it "fit".) We have a bay window behind our sink & faucet that's down to the counter and we love it! It gives you such a great expanse of view and you don't feel like you're being cut off from the outside like a raised window does. counter height window pictures please Counter window h[e]ight -- please help! Comments (9)pps7, I had the sink window sitting at the counter in the kitchen remodel in my previous house without any problems. It was popped out a little like like erikanh's; I love the look of space behind the faucet. I was impressed with how much more light there was on the counters - a boon because the room had been very dark. In this house the window over the sink is 3 inches above the counter like circuspeanut's. I haven't had any problems with water on the wood windows. Being able to see out is always important to me & I know you will enjoy it....See MoreHelp with trim for boxed recessed kitchen window
Comments (12)I have a bay window that is counter-height (it's 18" deep x 6'10" wide). I think counter-height is the best way to go. Here's an old picture of mine (from right after our remodel & before any "decorating"). I've also included a link to a thread with pictures of counter-height windows so you can see what others have done. counter height window pictures please: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2484108/counter-height-window-pictures-please My window:...See MoreKitchen window right up to counter top?
Comments (7)Counter-height windows are actually not that unusual - at least not on this site! When we remodeled, we replaced our bay window that was 22" off the floor for one that's 36" off the floor with the counter all the way into the well - and we love it! I will say that our bay is 18" deep, so that makes our counters pretty deep behind the sink. We do have wood on the bottom b/c of a measuring error (long story), but it's only a short piece. We have had no issues with it - it's been almost 9 years now. One thing to keep in mind is that if the bay area is too deep, it may be difficult for you to open windows (casement are best in this situation) or clean the windows. We're a tall family and it's a bit deep even for us. [I have my DH and DS clean the windows b/c they're well over 6' tall (6'5" & 6'7", respectively).] Being able to reach all the way to back for cleaning the counters is also a consideration. (I have no problems with that, I can reach the windows, I just can't reach the tops of the windows for cleaning!) Measure your arm reach b/f you finalize your plans to be sure you can reach what you need to reach. I suspect a bumpout 9" to 12" is the limit for most people. Here's a thread that has pictures of counter-height windows. Mine is in it - as I recall, it's from b/f our remodel was done, but it will show you what we did. I particularly like MamaDadaPaige's (8" bumpout) and ErickaNH's (6" bumpout) windows - MamaDadaPaige's is close to the top of the thread and ErikaNH's is half-way down the thread. They posted both interior and exterior pictures. counter height window pictures please http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2484108/counter-height-window-pictures-please . The above thread also contains instructions for determining the correct height to install the window(s) - based on your finished floor height....See MoreBuehl
