I keep trying to read this whole thread before responding but it keeps growing LOL. I didn't learn from my mom. My father would always shoo me into the kitchen to help her, which I detested because (2) I wasn't interested in learning. (1) Her style in the kitchen would make me CRAZY - 'mom, dad sent me in here to help. What do you want me to do?' she would then put her finger in her mouth, say 'hmmmm, let me think', then she would take a few minutes to THINK and come up with 'peel those carrots'. I would then have to bug her (or my dad would jump on me) to find another task. She wasn't organized or able to be a manager to delegate to me. OTOH she did LOVE international cuisine and exposed us to varieties of food far and wide, especially Chinese. I taught myself to cook my second year in the college apartments. I bought The Campus Survival Cookbook Parts 1 and 2 which helped me learn basics via appropriate college kid type menus, at my level. I also bought, on a lark, The Silver Palate and loved many of those recipes. I still have the Campus books and I think they are the best kind to give a college kid since they helped with shopping, stocking a small kitchen, and potlucks. My DH, who is a better 'technical' cook than I, also taught himself. He says his mother was a dreadful cook and his grandmother would say 'bring your girlfriend over and I'll teach her'. Didn't help that he didn't have a GF at the time....He taught himself via 9th grade 'Bachelor Cooking' in HS and the Joy of Cooking, which is his bible. He is now reading Bittman's How to Cook Everything, LOL. So we both pretty much taught ourselves. I wish I would have had more of a 'basics' foundation, about cuts of meats and baking science, but I can find that out on my own. I do love working with my DH in the kitchen!

Uh huh, sure. I have a Jack Russel and I bet that is a very well edited video. :)) Mine "steals" slippers, prances in front of me so I can see he has it. Runs around the dining table a few times then up the stairs. He then stands at the top and barks with a mouth full of slipper. If I ignore him he'll bring it down to me. Then after I take it, he pushes open the pantry door and looks from me to his treats and back to me again. I'd like to know what this little dog was REALLY doing when he was being so "helpful". LOL!!

I agree, Annie, deciding on what to cook is sometimes more work than cooking it. I do a lot of food saving, so usually always have things in the freezer to pull out. Some of the things we have when I don't want to cook are just things that are easier to throw together. One that my DH likes was invented by one of our sons in high school. To a box of Annie's or Krafts Mac n Cheese add a can of drained albacore tuna-could even throw in some frozen peas if you like and a piece of fruit for dessert. And I never use the butter and milk in the mac n cheese , but sub plain Fave yogurt. I always have a can of Red salmon in the cupboard for a quick meal of salmon patties, a microwaved baked sweet or white potato and heat a frozen or canned vegetable. We always have fresh fruit around and I usually have a can of pears in the refrigerator for such times. I hard boil 7 eggs in my egg cooker weekly, so have those in the refrigerator to use for tuna salad or just as they are. I keep good hard cheeses and Johnsonville all beef summer sausage on hand and paired with a ripe pear or a good crisp apple and crackers works for me when I really don't want to cook. One of my favorites from childhood: a slice of buttered bread generously covered with slices of ripe avocado, then a grating of fresh black pepper and again generously cover with freshly shredded cheddar cheese. Yummy! Add a glass of milk and an apple for dessert. Seagrass, I hope you are getting some ideas that work for you!

Pancakes...my brother LOVED pancakes and they always make me think of him.

The smell of any food that I have in the crockpot, when I walk thru the door after work, knowing that I don't have to cook, it's already done.

Anything that is being grilled on the Traeger grill. I love the smell of the wood.

Roast chicken or roast beef. I don't know when the last time I cooked a roast of beef but I do have one in my freezer.

I miss the smell of waking up to bacon cooking. I cook my own so it is not the same as waking up to it. My Dad used to make a great breakfast for all of us kids on Sunday mornings and as soon as you smelled the bacon you woke up. LOL

Today my daughter made scrambled eggs and fried balogna. The smell drove me so crazy I finished off a half pound of balogna.
