AM, how'd the coffee clatch go?

Thank you for asking - a recap is definitely in order.

The night before I made a coffee cake, a quiche with caramelized onion and gruyere, a tray of blondies and picked up a few bags of mini bagels with cream cheese (one friend was going to come by with NYC bagels, but she got called into work earlier than expected - she's a network news reporter). In the morning I made the kids help clean, then put on hot water for tea and made hot chocolate in the crockpot with mini marshmallows on the side, set up the dining room table and that was it.

Friends came with boxes of coffee, fruit, orange juice and apple cider. We had 2 pumpkin breads, one banana bread with walnuts and chocolate chips (delicious), boxes of coffee and munchkins. The quiche disappeared, as did the bagels, munchkins fruit and hot chocolate - I had to keep making more. All in all, I was left with with less than 1/4 of the food. Not bad, right? The only change for next time would be to run out in the morning and pick up fresh bagels. They would have gone for sure.

In total we had 13 women and close to 30 kids. It was a fairly mild day, so the kids were outside playing soccer, tennis, on the swings, etc.. The older girls that were here took control over the little ones who were also mostly girls. In the 7 - 10 range it was all boys, so they were completely self sufficient.

The first guests came around 10:20 and although most people left around 2, a few left their kids to run errands, so I didn't have an empty house until after 5. One friend showed up late with her kids, around 3 and she kept me company while I cleaned up.

It was so much fun and there was so much energy and excitement that it was wonderful to spend the day with friends. Everyone showed up wearing their stickers and sporting festive "vote" and "USA" shirts. We had all blue plates and napkins (that was actually an nice accident,left over from July 4). Of all the women there, there was only one McCain supporter, which is interesting considering that these women are all from New Canaan, Wilton and Darien, which you would traditionally think of as Republican areas. The next towns over (where I live) Weston and Westport, are traditionally more Democratic. But then again, we are all Montessori moms, so we skew a little liberal.

This may become an annual tradition, it was such a wonderful way to spend the day.

Sniff, sniff. I am homesick again. Next year your guest list report will have to include "and Jojo who made the trip all the way from Upstate NY"

Threeapples I haven't done anything yet. Just in the early stages of planning a remodel and only know I want white cabs and a whitish stone that isn't marble.Love it, but too afraid of the etching and staining. Surviving without a kitchen - how'd you do it?

I dreaded, dreaded, DREADED being without a kitchen, and I scheduled our reno to the T so it would be quick. Needless to say, it didn't happen that way - last-minute changes, contractor getting really sick, another contractor's family tragedy, and various other unforseen issues. We had our tear-out the end of October and we still aren't finished yet. But we are actually okay with it. I think the main thing, as others have mentioned, is being set up near a sink. You don't realize how much you miss water until you don't have it handy. I don't have a laundry or utility sink, so I am set up in our upstairs bathroom where we have a big counter with double sinks. Across the hall I have our food and microwave set up in a spare bedroom. It works out very well, but I wouldn't be able to wash anything large. I originally intended to use my crockpot, but I don't because I don't want to wash it. I also don't do anything that involves real prep or cooking because for me personally it would be too much of a PITA. But like others also mentioned above, we have discovered the prepared foods. I never really looked in the frozen food cases, but you can find just about anything to microwave these days, even brownies! So we are eating bagged salads, fresh fruit, canned soups, sandwiches, supermarket chicken, cereal, instant oatmeal, ramen noodles, and all kinds of frozen stuff. I feel like a college kid again! On the rare occasion we eat out, we try to order a lot of food that can be good the next day too. The biggest downside is that DH and I have gained probably 10 pounds each! So I do look forward to having my kitchen back and cooking and eating more healthfully again. One last thing I would do differently, I would have gotten a small fridge off Craig's list to keep in the bedroom if I'd known how long this was going to be. It is a little inconvenient (and cold) to run down to the garage where our fridge is now. But all in all, it's been pretty painless. We usually eat at our desks or in front of the TV. Now, you didn't mention if you have kids in the house, and I think that would make a big difference. If that's the case, I'm sure others will have better tips for you. The last thing that really helped was making a mental decision to not let things get to me. It wasn't easy at first when things starting getting off track, but I made a mental decision to be okay with it, and that has helped me be comfortable living this way. So my advice is prepare yourself mentally to go with the flow, prepare your physical surroundings so you don't feel too disorganized, and know that life will be back to normal one day, but with a beautiful new kitchen! Cute pooch. You have a good beginning; however, I'm wondering if your tv must go on that side of the room because of a cabie connection? Or could any cable connection be moved? Another idea would be to move the sofa to use it as a room divider -- have it facing the windows with one end against a wall or with an end table or at least a floor lamp between it and the wall. Perhaps add a sofa table behind it. I won't comment on the plan/orientation etc. There's enough good info here. This, though, from you: Yes, I realize I am the problem. I smiled at that. Nobody "wins" better than a homeowner who recognizes own limitations. It seems to me that you have some very specific wants, needs, and desires. So- stop for just a minute. Write your "living story". Put it in writing- when I entertain, I want ____. Number of people, how you'd like them to interact etc. When I enter my home, I must have _____. Be very specific, down to thinking about how to haul groceries to and fro. We need a 3rd garage because_____________. We desire a moat because- alligators. :) Don't lose your sense of humor. You get the picture, so I won't go on. Trust me- when you are this specific with an architect, your perspective is much better represented, in the final plans. Takes a lot less time, a lot less back-and-forth. The architect(s) get to sit and plot/plan from your specific directions, and guess work, for them, goes out the window. I did that, in a one-off custom build. After visits and plot planning from them, it literally took 3 weeks to see my dream, for this lot, on paper. We actually got "dueling" plans from our lead architect and his partner. They brought onion skins, and before our eyes- as we said what we liked about each- and what we didn't- and there we were. We got the "love child" of both, married together. Wow... So write it down- your story. BTW: My home has a bit of a "twist" on one wing. We were chasing a view of a skyline. Because of that one little thing, we are private from neighbors (city center small lot) and still have the skyline. Because of that one little thing, no matter what happens with the two neighboring properties, our private spaces will stay private, and nobody can block our view. Good luck, and don't stop trying. You deserve it. Keep us posted.
