AM, how'd the coffee clatch go?

Thank you for asking - a recap is definitely in order.

The night before I made a coffee cake, a quiche with caramelized onion and gruyere, a tray of blondies and picked up a few bags of mini bagels with cream cheese (one friend was going to come by with NYC bagels, but she got called into work earlier than expected - she's a network news reporter). In the morning I made the kids help clean, then put on hot water for tea and made hot chocolate in the crockpot with mini marshmallows on the side, set up the dining room table and that was it.

Friends came with boxes of coffee, fruit, orange juice and apple cider. We had 2 pumpkin breads, one banana bread with walnuts and chocolate chips (delicious), boxes of coffee and munchkins. The quiche disappeared, as did the bagels, munchkins fruit and hot chocolate - I had to keep making more. All in all, I was left with with less than 1/4 of the food. Not bad, right? The only change for next time would be to run out in the morning and pick up fresh bagels. They would have gone for sure.

In total we had 13 women and close to 30 kids. It was a fairly mild day, so the kids were outside playing soccer, tennis, on the swings, etc.. The older girls that were here took control over the little ones who were also mostly girls. In the 7 - 10 range it was all boys, so they were completely self sufficient.

The first guests came around 10:20 and although most people left around 2, a few left their kids to run errands, so I didn't have an empty house until after 5. One friend showed up late with her kids, around 3 and she kept me company while I cleaned up.

It was so much fun and there was so much energy and excitement that it was wonderful to spend the day with friends. Everyone showed up wearing their stickers and sporting festive "vote" and "USA" shirts. We had all blue plates and napkins (that was actually an nice accident,left over from July 4). Of all the women there, there was only one McCain supporter, which is interesting considering that these women are all from New Canaan, Wilton and Darien, which you would traditionally think of as Republican areas. The next towns over (where I live) Weston and Westport, are traditionally more Democratic. But then again, we are all Montessori moms, so we skew a little liberal.

This may become an annual tradition, it was such a wonderful way to spend the day.

Sniff, sniff. I am homesick again. Next year your guest list report will have to include "and Jojo who made the trip all the way from Upstate NY"

Just to update, we finally ordered a sectional from Century. It is L shaped with a loveseat on one wall and a sofa length on the other. The good thing is that it is 43" deep so it should be very comfortable to lay on. We chose a chenille type fabric in a greenish tone. We started the room's decor off by picking 2 oriental rugs and pulling colors from that. The sofa comes with 7 throw pillows, so I chose 2 different fabrics for 4 of those. We'll see if it works or not when it comes in! On another note, once we started to choose decor, we realized the color on the walls was pukey and we had to get the painters back to change from blue to brown. I'm so glad we did that. It really warms up a basement room with no windows. The lighting is what made color selection so tricky. Also in there, we got a leather recliner from Hancock & Moore. And the really neat looking Wisteria Barn door coffee table. Funny thing is that when it arrived, it really did smell like a...barn door! Fortunately that smell has disapated.

Reading this post just made me text my boyfriend and tell him what a good boyfriend he is and how much I appreciate him. You remind me a lot of me. I'm 31 now, but I dated a slew of guys who were takers while I am a giver. My ex bfs were not as bad as yours, they were actually ok guys who just didn't have it in them to be good boyfriends. I am a social worker and have dated a lot of "fixer uppers", LOL, it's in my nature. I accepted less than I deserved from a relationship hoping they would come around and actually be the kind of boyfriend I really wanted. None of them ever did. Then, I started dating someone completely not "my type". Didn't look the my usual type, didn't act like my usual type, wasn't into the same things as my usualy type, etc. He's the best boyfriend I've ever had, we've been dating a year now. He pays for things when I'm low on cash, he walks my dog so I can sleep in, he made a REAL effort on my birthday and surprised me with something very sweet, he drives over an hour multiple times a week to spend time with me, he tells me all the time how much he appreciates and loves me. I'm not a big Dr. Phil fan, but I've come to rely on something he says all the time: "When someone shows you who they are, believe them!". Your boyfriend is an @ss, pure and simple. He treats you like crap despite all the nice things you do for him. At least if you were his maid and whore you would be getting paid for it! Right now you're doing it for free with no appreciation or reciprocation. Be single and happy and the right guy will come along. It has nothing to do with how attractive or not attractive you are. Actually I've seen a direct correlation with guys who think they are soooo good looking and being shallow pieces of crap. Don't settle for any less than a guy head over heels about you who shows you constantly how much you mean to him. Try dating guys you usually don't, maybe you'll be surprised by what you find!

So sorry I missed the latest round of responses and questions! I'll attempt to catch up with replies here: @farmgirlinky, I also am conflicted about whether I might have preferred more contrast in the grout. I'm perfectly happy with how it turned out, so it's not enough of a conflict to make me want to change it, but I sure did like the look with the darker (pre-grout) lines. @sandesurf, thanks! I practically designed the whole kitchen around a display spot for that pear. My mom happens to be friends with a lot of incredible artists, and one of them made the pear for her just for fun. I have crassly told my mom many times that she'd better leave that pear to me when she died. Well, about a year and a half ago, she moved in with us, so thankfully, she didn't have to kick the bucket in order for me to get the pear. :) @sudhira, the tiles are Seneca Satins. The color is "lambswool" and, as you can see, there is a bit of variation since they're handmade. We are very pleased with the quality, but I have to say that the wait was ridiculous. When the woman at the store called as I was ordering, she was told they would ship within three to four weeks. Twelve weeks later, they were actually shipped--no explanation, no apology. @newbieremodeler, the prep sink is a Ticor S805. The bowl size is listed at 13" x 16-1/2" x 7-1/8", and this has worked out perfectly for us. It's big enough for anything we've wanted to prep, but it is small enough not to take up the whole island. We have been very pleased with it. The faucets are both Kohler Vinnata. The prep sink has the "secondary" size, and the main sink has the "primary" size. The difference is just enough to matter. @louisianapurchase, I don't know if I'd call the rest of the house "great" but it's quirky and different, and it certainly suits us. Here are a few really terrible quality phone pics of the living room and sunroom. When you see the ceilings in the rest of the house, it becomes clearer why we chose the ceiling we did for the kitchen.

Rob, it sounds perfect! Mother is here with me and that went well too, for which I am thankful. If it is her last year, at least it was a great one. If she's still with you next year, well, you set the bar high! Jasdip, I hope you're feeling better soon and can still recuperate enough to at least enjoy some of your time off! We just had our dinner yesterday, there were 11 of us with Mother there. I high-heat roasted a tenderloin, using Barbara Kafka's method ala AnnT and served it with horseradish sauce. We also had a ham glazed with pineapple and brown sugar, twice baked potatoes, sweet potatoes stuffed with Italian sausage and gruyere, Sol's honey rolls, creamed corn. macaroni and cheese at the request of The Princess, cranberry/raspberry relish, broccoli with cheese sauce because it's Mother's favorite. Dessert was cookies and fudge, cherry crunch pie, apple pie and cheesecake. We had "appetizers" too, a cheese ball with crackers, deviled eggs, a relish tray with pickles and olives, a tray of cheese and Elery's homemade venison sausage. After that we opened gifts. Maci refused to eat anything other than fudge, Ashley came with her two German Shepherds and Amanda brought her Golden Retriever. Bud flew his drone around the house causing the dogs to bark and chase each other. Ashley played pranks on Grandma (my Mother) which resulted in her getting spanked by an 84 year old, which was extremely entertaining (for me!) Kevin had worked all day and tried to not fall asleep on the couch. You know, the usual. A pile of tenderloin, right off the slicer: Cookies and fudge: Apple pie: Next up, brunch with Elery's family on January 2, which also happens to be Elery's birthday, so that should be fun. They are coming here, and I'm cooking that 2nd tenderloin and "brunch stuff", still to be determined. We'll be eating at about 10 am and there will be 5 children, 14 and under, 12 of us if Mother is still here at my house then. Annie
