Caramel covered Cheetos

Oh man! Co-workers are insisting that I bring those little devil snacks to work again this year. I can't find the recipe or the thread(s). Can someone help?

I've not had the nerve to make them yet.

Caramel CheetosÂ® - Linda C

2 cups light brown sugar
1 cup margarine - yes, for this one you must use margarine
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 - 21 oz. pkg. CheetosÂ® - crunchy kind

Mix sugar, margarine and corn syrup in pan. Bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and add soda. Stir until light in color and foamy. Spray a roasting pan (deep 10 x 14) with Pam. Put CheetosÂ® in pan. Pour the mixture over CheetosÂ® and stir, coating each piece. Place in oven at 250 degrees. Bake for 1 hour stirring every 15 minutes. Immediately, pour onto wax paper, or cookie sheets, sprayed with Pam. (This is the hard part.) VERY QUICKLY spread out as thin as possible. If not quick and spread out as thin as possible, you will get a big hard glob. After about 5 minutes, pull/break these apart even more and loosen them from the wax paper. If you don't, you'll have wax paper stuck to them when you go to eat them.
You will regret it if you don't double the batch as guests are going to demand MORE! You can bake batches together and add an extra 20 minutes to bake time. I do them separately because of having to work so quickly to keep them apart at the end. The one batch can almost get too hard while working with the other batch.

Annie, pretty smart baiting me with a coffee contraption. It worked. I haven't used that device, although very similar to a Melitta drip or one of the many knock-offs. I haven't done the homework yet but it looks like Chemex started the whole drip thing- very cool. I'll have to do taste comparisons to see what I think of paper filters though. I've been under the impression that non paper filters let the flavorful oils and light sediment through. Chemex suggests that they get a better cup by holding back the oils and sediments. I'll get back to you on that one, To you old GW pals that said hi, thank you, you have been missed. As seems to be the nature of my second fifty years on earth, I start a new job every couple years so am always seriously busy in the ramping up department. When I'm buried, I usually lay low from the blogosphere. My last time hanging around here, it was getting kind of tense- I hope things have calmed down some. Since those glorious days of coffee klatching with you all, I've taken up low and slow BBQ- when done properly, oh my, what tasty vittles. Well, if LindaC were still here, she'd tell you to make those caramel covered Cheetos. I'd probably make some no-bake cookies, maybe some of Ann T's brandied cherry balls, the peanut butter rice krispie treats that my daughters love so much, Chex mix and/or Puppy Chow (which is now called Muddy Buddies, I guess), and those ranch oyster crackers. Add some Divinity or pralines to the candy mix, or make Oreo Truffles. Chocolate Scotcheroos 1 cup light corn syrup 1 cup sugar 1 cup peanut butter 6 cups Kellogg'sÂ® Cocoa KrispiesÂ® cereal OR or 6 cups Kellogg'sÂ® Rice KrispiesÂ® cereal 1 package (6 oz., 1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate morsels 1 cup butterscotch chips Directions 1. Place corn syrup and sugar into 3-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sugar dissolves and mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat. Stir in peanut butter. Mix well. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated. Press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Set aside. 2. Melt chocolate and butterscotch chips together in 1-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Spread evenly over cereal mixture. Let stand until firm. Cut into 2 x 1-inch bars when cool. Cream Cheese Brandy Cherry Balls (Ann_T) Source: 1983 Oct/Nov. Entertainment and Recipe Booklet 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, quartered 2 tablespoons Brandy 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips 1 cup butterscotch chips 1 8 ounce package cream cheese 2 cups mini marshmallows 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 2 cups flaked coconut Marinate cherries at least 4 hours or overnite in brandy Melt Chocolate chips and butterscotch chips and add cream cheese. Stir in cherries, marshmallows and walnuts and refrigerate until cold enough to roll into balls. Roll in coconut. Refrigerate. The longer the better. The flavours intensify. (I do use my own home canned brandied sweet cherries in these, and I cut the miniature marshmallows into quarters so I get smaller pieces. They are pretty darn tasty and the best conversation starter weird food I've ever shared in public. I get a kick out of the people that sneer and gufaw and criticize when they first show up on the table but then just can't stop grabbing them by the handful...

I am going to have my neice help me make this while she is here this week. That and peppermint bark popcorn. Good neice/aunt projects.

btw, as far as I'm concerned Cheetos are a separate food group! Can't wait to try them covered with caramel!

So, does anyone take the caramel Cheetos and dunk them in chocolate? Then roll them in nuts? Wrap with bacon, bread them in cookie crumbs and deep fry?? Then of course, top with gravy...

It just seems... right, somehow.

I'ver never made these, but I just bought two bags of Cheetos and extra margarine... So we can munch during the Lions game at Thanksgiving. Thanks MM for requesting!

me, either, Eileen. This is more puzzling to me than "Who had nerve enough to eat the first egg?" Who would make such a thing in the first place, and why? But.......

Well I will say right now that if I had know what they were I never would have put one into my mouth....but I was munching away and said! OMG! this is delicious....I must have the recipe!....then she sent me the recipe...
Nasty cheetoes, which give me a head ache because of all the MSG, covered with caramel and baked???
Sweet and salty I get....but sweet, salty and cheesy? no way!! LOL!

How do you store these things? I made a batch this afternoon. As they are setting out, they are getting stickier and stickier.

Perhaps you didn't bake them long enough? They should be like hard candy on the outside.

I imagine they would take a lot like the combination you can get at popcorn shops: caramel corn and cheese corn mixed together. My daughter and I were sharing a bag, she insisted on getting this. I thought it would be terrible, but I was surprised.

When I took them out of the oven, they were like hard candy. But as they set out cooling, they got kind of tacky. It rained yesterday, so that may have had something to do with it.

I put them in ziplock bags last night, but left a small bowl on the counter for folks to nibble out of. The ones in the ziplocks are fine, the ones on the counter are very sticky. Is that normal?
