I am very fortunate to have a close relationship with both my kids. Both are very private about some things but they do often share information that we keep between us. DD is more apt to share her personal life. DS is more apt to share things in a more offhand matter. He will remark on things he wants me to know in a more indirect way. Yes I keep their secrets. Trust is very important in our family.

Yes, they confide in me. Especially my 22 year old son. He tells me WAY more than I want to know. Sometimes I think he does it for the shock value!! My 26 year old daughter knows she can tell me anything and I will take it to the grave!! :)

Yes, we are very close with our kids and their spouses. We have lots of sharing times together. The spouses know they can trust us with any information we share .

Mine confide in their mother but not me. Then again, I have girls, so that's normal (I hope).

I'm the adult child and yes I confide in my mom a lot. She's my best friend and I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have her to talk to sometimes. I trust her with anything. My teens talk to me a lot now and I hope that will continue as they get older.

I don't confide in my mother at all. She has always had the attitude that she would rather not know anything too personal about her children. I have no idea if she could keep a secret or not. She probably wouldn't repeat what she didn't want to hear in the first place.

There are some things I couldn't avoid telling her like when I got engaged. She said 'Oh no!' and expressed much disappointment. I basically got the same reaction when I told her I pregnant with my first child a few years later. My more sensitive dad called back the next day to apologize for their poor reaction to that news (she never apologized).

In fact I just had some major news for her that I opted to deliver via e-mail just so I wouldn't have to hear another negative reaction even though I made it clear that it's not a bad thing.

My 3 tell me everything! There are times when I wish they didn't-LOL Secret, yep, I can keep a secret!

Several of my step kids also talk to me about everything!

Son, in his late 40's, recently began a relationship with a widow with a child who has a child with which she has sporadic connection, and he's having some concerns about stepkids ... and step-grandkid. Some of which he shares with me.

Daughter was somewhat disappointed a few years ago, after the break-up of her marriage, that Dad had spoken to others in the family of her husband as having come home and announced that he'd found a soul-mate ... and that it wasn't her.

I think that she'd spoken of it in similar terms to others than me, so I hadn't considered it as especially secret ... but, though she didn't refer to it to me, son reported that she'd been troubled by my having referred to it in that fashion to others in the family.

One does need to be careful in choosing what is to be considered confidential and what isn't.

And, as you've come to know, I'm fairly open about things.

I am an adult child, don't have any yet.
I do not confide in my parents. I get along very well with them, we enjoy each other's company. We have sililar interests and opinion. Even when we don't agree, though, we can have respectful discussions. I think we have a good relationship. I share news with them, keep them up to date on our lives on the surface. But I do not confide about my marriage, finances, personal issues, etc. Actually, I don't really confide in anyone, so it's me, not them. I did not confide in them as a teen or young adult, either. It wasn't that I tried to keep secrets (I was a good kid and didn't really have any juicy secrets anyway). I just like my privacy with some things. I didn't tell my mom when I started my period as a teen. I really just didn't think about telling her. I know I could tell my parents anything, always knew that. I just don't. When I have problems now, it doesn't occur to me to tell them b/c I don't need/want them to do anything about it. I also sort of always felt like my brother gave them enough problems (and still does) that I don't want to burden them. Same reason I don't confide in others, knowing other people's secrets can be a burden and I don't think others really want to know my confidences.

On the flip side, though, I often hear other people's confidences and don't repeat or judge. My 16 y/o is like I was, just goes about his life and doesn't talk about it. My 10 y/o DD is my shadow, talks non-stop, and tells me every detail of her day (which drives me nuts!) but I have no doubt that will stop in a few years. ;o)

My daughters are 25 and 20 - my 25 year old confides in me; my 20 yr old does in her own way too; she is still in the "becoming an adult" stage. I will keep every confidence of my children - if I think that they need to talk to each other I will say "maybe your sister can help". I am one of eight kids, and I loved my Mom (she has passed) and would try and confide in Mom, but then I would find out that she told my oldest sister - they were very close and they shared everything. It made me very careful about what I would tell my Mom.

I would confide in my dad; not so much my mom.

My youngest DD does, not so much the older one. Sometimes I honestly could do fine without so much information.
I do not confide in my kids, as much as they do me. Some things I feel need to remain private, but even more so, I want them to live life without me tarnishing some of their adventures.

Yes, they both share their hopes, dreams and fears in their own time and at their own pace. I just came home from spending a perfect evening with DS. His g/f was away (she's wonderful, and it would have been nice if she'd been able to come), and we went to dinner, and then shopped around for home appliances, doors, tiles, kitchen cupboards, etc, for a future project while we chatted away. We're compatible shoppers, but we rarely get a chance to hang out like that, and it was a spontaneous and very pleasant event.

Anyway, in the last few days and at dinner, DS has had things to sort out, and he bounced some things off of me. He has a lot of decisions to make.

i dont have any children, i do however have a 13 yr old neice, (im sure we all know what being 13 mmeans lol) she confides in me about everything..we have an agreement anything she tells me will be kept between just us..unless its a problem i cant handle, or something that will hurt her..then i will tell my brother and sil. she knows this, i was right up front about it and she still comes to me all the time. i do not want her making the same mistakes i did, sometimes its easier for her to tell me stuff so i can act as a buffer i guess, which i dont mind at all, as long as one of us knows whats going on. if its serious i will tell her parents, she had a stalker at 11 yrs old scared the he@@ out of everyone. i am glad she can rely on me and has someone to talk too. as for me my parent know everything lol my dad has a 6th sense about him so no sense in lying about anything LEARNED that one a very long long time ago lol.

One does and one doesn't. Just a difference in temperament I guess.

They can, and do, and yes I will keep it to myself. On the other hand, when something is happening in their lives, that is very troubling or bad, and there is nothing Hubs & I can do to help, they keep it to themselves until it is resolved, one way or another, knowing we would make us worried and unsettled. Our son, Brian who passed away almost two years ago, had been in a bad way and in a lot of pain the last few months of his life. His widow told us, after, that, he knew how it would worry us if we knew and we lived so far away and in bad health ourselves, he didn't want us to know. I think of that as a priceless gift from him. It also helped, after his passing, to know he is now painfree. That did help, some. Also, our daughter & her hubs, were in a difficult financial situation, and didn't want to tell us until they got it resolved, which they did and then told us about it. I tell you, it sure made us so very proud of them. Dottie

My daughter's 43 and I'm happy she doesn't have any secrets or need to confide in me something she wouldn't want her husband to know. I raised her to be independent and she is. She knows if she had a real problem she could come to me, but thank heavens that hasn't happened so far.
