If you have adult single children...

... do you consider the single guys/girls that you meet as potential significant others for them? Do you actually ever set them up for a date?

My DD recently broke up with her boyfriend and now I find myself thinking certain guys I meet (especially while doing this room addition) might be good matches for her.

So.. do you leave your kids love lifes alone or do you butt in? I don't think I'd ever set my DD up with anyone, but would have no problem making sure DD and a potential SIL (being optimistic here) at least might have to be the same place at the same time.

My dd is 27, single, had a good career and has bought her own home--all on her own. Never been married or engaged.

I completely stay out of her love life. It's her responsibility to find and develop a relationship with the right guy. I've seen too many parents, friends and others try to set someone else up, it doesn't work out, and then the young person blames the well-meaning matchmaker. Better to let them work it out on their own, IMO. In one case, the parent actually forced the child to marry the parent's choice of partner (long story) and it hasn't ended well at all--it's been a marriage that's brought heartache to all concerned--the two pricipals, their children, their parents, and lots of collateral people. Why? Because both resent that they were forced to marry someone who ended up not being a good fit, but neither wants to divorce, so it's been a 30 year heartach for them.

Which isn't to say I wouldn't love to see dd find the right person, get married and give me some grandchildren--but I just want her to do it on her terms, in her time.

Well, I might make sure she came over to visit at a time that the other person is there. But that would be it.

However, never did set any kids up. Nevertheless, I knew someone who did so very successfully. She was a teacher, and met a new, young teacher she thought would be perfect for her son. So she asked another teacher on campus who knew her son well to please fix them up. It was a match that led right to the alter. Very wonderful couple.

Wow! I thought my son was bad but still ... I can relate on some level to these comments and stories. I always say no one can break your heart like your own child. It's a different kind of heartbreak that slices through to your soul. My son is a good young man but man oh man is he stubborn. Stubborn to the point it's heartbreaking. Just got off the phone with him asking what are his plans for the future. His response was, "You know, I am not going to talk to you because you just disrespected and insulted me." I'm thinking, "How on earth is asking what your future plans are disrespecting and insulting?" He just doesn't want to plan a future, no goal, no college, nothing. Next he'll go on silence for a while. Mind you, he was married a little over a year ago, New Year's Eve 2013. After I told him he's too young at 25. Young in terms of not planning a future. He went and married anyways to prove me wrong. Well, I was right, now he's going through a divorce. His wife is divorcing for the same reason I am questioning him ... no ambition. But he can't see the ocean because of the waves. My son is an only child who has had the best life. Better than all his cousins by a long shot but he can't see this either. He complains and blames. For what?! I have no idea. I made his life so comfortable. Yes, it is narcissism. He feels he doesn't have to do anything. Both his father and I, who never married are products of education. We both pursued college degrees and entered the workforce. His father was never really a part of his life but he sent monetary support. Me, I was the sole breadwinner with a nice career that I grew tired of and now back in college to make a career change. So I have no idea how to motivate him and at times feel I am at fault. Thank you oilpainter for your words, " Their actions are THEIRS not yours, and it does not mean you have no value." I was struggling a bit after the phone call till I read your words. Maybe it's me and my expectations. Well, I'm going to heed the words I've lived with all my life that have served me well - If you don't know what to do then pray. And I'm going to speak with a therapist. I need some counseling. One child, two children, three children ... it doesn't matter. I have one and it's just as hard.

naturewoman0123 Its taken me years but I’m over it and it happened rather suddenly. It was like a switch was flipped. But there was a lot of hard work. I believe it was the grace of God. But also the work I’ve done. I’ve seen the reality of who my kids are and it isn’t pretty. I’ve accepted that I don’t like who they are. I’ve also accepted the situation for what it is and not what I would like it to be. I’ve also accepted that I am unwilling to be treated without respect and gratitude. I am unwilling to accept their abuse. Text is easy and intrusive. My sons text me. My daughter does not. I texted them both that I was blocking them in text and that they would have to communicate to me through e-mail. I had a very rough week and then BOOM it was better just like that. All of this is a dysfunctional family pattern that repeats itself over and over. Remaining in the abuse prevents healing. By the work I’ve done I mean counseling, reading, listening to YouTube videos and some serious self reflecting on my family of origin and how the problem was created. Bottom line is they made a choice. A really crappy choice that is impacting every part of their lives. Every choice we make forms who we are. I can’t control that. That is between them and God and way above my pay grade. Talking to other people won’t heal you. Detaching and distancing yourself and understanding the situation will. I feel better than I have in years. If nothing happens I’m ok with that and is far preferable to what the relationship is now. They are condescending, rude, hurtful etc... They deny, diminish, dismiss, blame, project and lie. Its to justify their crappy behavior. It’s the same story over and over. I feel completely liberated. Have hope. It is possible to feel great again.

Reading this thread makes me cry . . . How easy it is to tell someone else that it's their own fault they're being abused. People who would never think to tell a woman who was being beaten by her husband or one that had been attacked by the "nice" guy she'd been dating that they were at fault seem to have no problem turning around and telling a parent that they're just getting what they deserve if another adult who just happens to be someone to whom they contributed some DNA and whom they tried to raise as a good person is the one causing this kind of damage. I admit, I wasn't a perfect parent. I was abused as a child/adolescent/young adult by everyone from my parents to the man I thought (at the time) was the love of my life. In an effort to stop the cycle of abuse I swore never to raise my hand to my child. However, I guess I went too far the other way - in an effort to engender a sense of self-esteem, self-respect and self-love that I never felt I was overly sensitive to her needs, wants and feelings. The odd thing is that her younger sister, whom I also raised, is nothing like her. Her sister would never think of sending me to the hospital with a cracked wrist and a concussion, or calling me a disgusting b**ch or stealing my car, my money, my credit and debit cards. The older one is manipulative, cruel and narcissistic. But she has my grandson, who is a powerless, innocent pawn in her twisted view of what I "owe" her. And I can't make her move out without her taking him with her, thus leaving him homeless and vulnerable - especially when she has no one else to take her stress and anger out on once she's gone. She's never been physically abusive toward him, but I've heard the way she talks to and treats him when she's angry . . . When it's just the two of them what's to stop it from escalating? What?!? Call the police and/or social services, you say? But I/we don't have any bruises and she says we're lying and over-reacting. Charge her with theft? She lives with me and I voluntarily let her drive my car at one point so now it's not considered theft any more - they tell me to go to court and sue her to get my car back. Kick her out? And what happens to the sweet 8-yr-old boy she has in her power? And how do I pay for the windows she'll break, the car she'll trash in retaliation, the doors she'll kick in, the apartment she'll get me kicked out of with her disruptive behavior? Move? Yes, because I have hundreds or even thousands of dollars just sitting in a bank account that she hasn't stolen or manipulated out of me yet, so I can just pick up, break my lease and go somewhere else. And none of these reasons even begin to touch on the intense love I have for this woman/child to whom I gave birth and who has been part of my life longer than anyone except my parent. Or how I want her to have a better life than I did and, therefore, feel a compulsive need to protect her - even from herself. Are you a parent? Look at that infant or toddler or child sleeping so peacefully there by you and tell me you don't want to protect him / her from harm. That feeling doesn't go away just because they get bigger - maybe you learn to step back and let them fly on their own, but the impulse to protect will ALWAYS be there. So when you know that going to the police will have life-long negative consequences for him/her you hesitate. Yes, when I had bruises I called the police and pressed charges and had custody of her son removed and the positive consequences of those actions were much shorter lived than the negative. She got off drugs and straightened up, sure, but now she can't get a job because of her record. And because she can't get a job she depends on me, and because she depends on me she resents me, and because she resents me she abuses me. How do you fix that circle? Giving her more current charges only makes it worse. Thanks for judging me on top of all the stress I'm going through trying to find my way through this dark and dangerous part of my life, it's making it so much easier for me to see and negotiate my path.

They can, and do, and yes I will keep it to myself. On the other hand, when something is happening in their lives, that is very troubling or bad, and there is nothing Hubs & I can do to help, they keep it to themselves until it is resolved, one way or another, knowing we would make us worried and unsettled. Our son, Brian who passed away almost two years ago, had been in a bad way and in a lot of pain the last few months of his life. His widow told us, after, that, he knew how it would worry us if we knew and we lived so far away and in bad health ourselves, he didn't want us to know. I think of that as a priceless gift from him. It also helped, after his passing, to know he is now painfree. That did help, some. Also, our daughter & her hubs, were in a difficult financial situation, and didn't want to tell us until they got it resolved, which they did and then told us about it. Both my son and daughter are in long-term relationships. But even when they weren't, I don't ever remember thinking along those lines. So I guess I must be one who doesn't butt in. I'm sure they're grateful for that.....IF they ever give it a thought! :-)

No way I would steer them over to meet a worker. If he turned out to be an abuser or pedophile, I wouldn't want that on my shoulders.

Nope! As adults, I think thier lives & choices are their own. Both my adult son & daughter are in long-term relationships..but I couldn't have made better choices for them if I'd wanted to. My children haven't aways made the choices I thought were right for them, but they didn't ask my opinion and I didn't give it!

My situation is exactly like Azzalea's. My daughter is 27 and has a house of her own.. she bought it when she was 23. But I would never interfere with her personal life by trying to hook her up with someone.

No, I have a single son and there is no way I would try to set him up with a girl. I feel like he is old enough to pick one out on his own. He will be 47 in a few months.

I would NEVER do such a thing.. Hmmm, let's see, Azzalea has a 27-year old unmarried daughter, Sue has a 46 year-old unmarried son. Well, well, well!!!! ;-)

I have a 46 year old single daughter (who BTW has two small children!). I wish I had had something to say about her choice of a spouse, she wouldn't be alone now with 2 kids to raise.

My older daughter is 20. She's had three boyfriends in three years, something always goes wrong. There's a guy who works in my local grocery store who is very good looking, very polite and industrious. I'd like to ask him if he has a girlfriend, if not, I have this daughter. . .

Granted, my oldest son is only 20, but I don't think I would try. I love him to death, but we have so little in common that I don't think I could even come close to finding him someone who would have his interests.

My youngest is just starting to date. I find it interesting to see what attracts him.

Daughter married a person of her choice, they bought a house ... and later broke up (no kids).

She has been in several occupations ... and locations. Later introduced to someone by a high schoool pal: they were together for four years or so, but broke up.

Now, unbelievably in mid-40s, she has bought a condo in a far-away location.

I never had any part in match-making ... never even had anyone in mind that I thought might be a candidate.

Son didn't seem much interested in females for years, I never considered attempting to initiate a contact (probably wasn't familiar with relevant potential suitors, anyway).

Recently he has found someone with mainly grown offspring ... via internet, it appears. They have been spending time together.

During a recent discussion here of raising children, I said that I'd felt that one of my chief tasks as a parent is to help my child prepare him/herself to work toward independence ... and someone referred to it, saying that she too felt it to be an important part of our parental responsibility.

That said, if I'd met someone whom I thought that he might find interesting, I might mention to him that I'd met someone that might be of interest - we've developed a fairly informal, straightforward, easy-going relationship. That would be all that I might do.

Oh goodness! I have a friend who badgered me for years to introduce my single daughter (who she knew)to her son. DD was 38 and he's somewhere in his mid 40's. Neither has ever been married, he owns a condo and she, her own home.

Last year an old HS friend of Badgerer and mine was going to be in town so she set up a get together at popular FF type restaurant including husbands (who had never met) and she suggested I have DD join us and she would bring DS.

DD is in sales, perky and outgoing. Can pretty much talk to anybody and joined us. We sat ourselves at a long table and amidst all the greetings, DD and her DS wound up sitting opposite each other. From there on in all anyone ever saw of him was the top of his head! He was so shy he couldn't converse with anyone. At one point his father said "Jimmy! wake up!" A very poor match.

Other than that once, I stay completely out of her love life.

My single son just turned 35, he is very outgoing, handsome and successful. He once almost married, but called it off at the last minute (it was a mess, because he had a beautiful home built and it was full of furniture) everything had to be split and of course the ring, which he spent entirely too much money for. This woman is still calling him and it has been 7 years! But in the past year and a half he has been dating someone and they are living together now, a wonderful & beautiful (inside and out) girl. I have never see him so happy. I could not have picked a better person for him. They just bought an adorable puppy, they have been traveling all over and they are fixing up his house, so maybe soon they will get married. I hope so. I am so happy for both of them.
