Do Your Adult Children Have A Key to Your Home?

Yes, two of the ones that live the closest to us do. We do not keep a key hidden outside. I also have a key to the one daughter's house and I have keys to two daughter's cars. I don't drive, but I shope mostly with them and if they should lock their keys in their vehicles, I have a way to open them up. Just wondering about the rest of you on here.

I only have one DD and she doesn't live nearby but we have keys to each others houses. My best friend and I also have keys to each others houses. Never know when you might have an emergency. I don't have a neighbor I would leave a key with.

No, no one has a key to my home, I left a key with a neighbor once because we were going away for a month. The couple went in, he changed our settings on the furnace and she probably went through every drawer in the house.

SD10 has come from a family in Ca. that stops everything for the children. They actually run wild. Not something that I am used to at. Although SD10 is not wild, she is very well behaved, she does retain that "I am the most important person in the room" attitude. She has made progress and as her daddy makes progress (LOL) I think she will do much better. She made a comment after arriving here that sums it up quite adequitly I think. She was dead serious when she remarked..."I'm just not right anymore!"....She had never been challenged before she moved in with us. So here is a 13 year old boy and a 17 year old girl and myself refusing to be told how life works by a 7 year old....pretty funny. Dad would just let her have her way, she ran the show. Having her home for the holiday break is giving me a chance to work on things. She is limited now to 2 hours of TV unless we do a movie or something extra. She and I have played on the Wii together and she spent time at a friend's house. She was drawing in the living room when I came in here to post. I had a long talk with DS16 last night and he is missing the "old" days before I remarried. It has been difficult for him to accept SD's age/behavior. But then of course he was the youngest before she came along. I was quite sad about it, did a lot of crying and then decided that he and I should have a date night every so often. SD and dad could do a date night on the same night and that would give her his undivided attention. As far as extra activities....she is in an extra math and science class twice a week, private violin lessons once a week and church youth group once a week. We do trips to the library.....she loves to read. We also do church every Sunday and she is in Sunday school there. She has a pretty well rounded life. I do want to make sure that I am not picking on her. I know that she is doing what she has been taught and what has worked for her before the remarriage. I have to teach DH how to be part of family and not an outstanding individual so to speak. I don't mean that disrespectfully. Family dynamics from childhood play a big part in it, both on his side and mine. I remember my first SD being the same way and she was an only child not to mention the grandparents favorite. I had never seen adults stop what they were doing to watch a child dance until I met her. She wasn't even taking lessons. I thought...ok...when are we just going to sit and watch her breath!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was raised in a household where kids were to be seen and not heard and most of the time nobody even wanted to see you.

Well, of course you did the right thing. No area is exempt from problems with crime and gangs. They've invaded every area of society, it seems. I would definitely assume your son is telling the truth. But even if he isn't--what does that mean? He's feeling insecure, unable to live on his own. He NEEDS you right now, for whatever reason. As long as you have rules in your home, and he's expected to abide by them, there's nothing wrong with letting a grown child back in your home. I can tell you this--even moving an hour away from our old home and where our daughter currently lives and works, I have a space for her in the new place. She's got a room if she wants it when she comes to visit, and if she ever feels the need to boomerang back, she's more than welcome. I would even fix up the finished basement as an apartment for her (it has a separate entrance), if she wanted it. They're always our children, and I think we always try to be there for them.

Wonder how things worked out for James? Funny this resurfaced. All of our kids are old enough to drive now, and two of them are much closer to the house than we are (like an hour and a half versus 3.5 for us, if all the stars are aligned. My stepson and his family are the closest, at an hour away, but they have kids now and are much too busy to hop up there, but they do spend a week with us over the summer, and sometimes we have ThxG there too. All of my kids, without prodding, ask first. They have all used the house on their own with friends. We have groundrules and the kids have taken good care of the house. None of my kids are really partiers, though I am sure they are not angelic. In the latest instance, my DD and her friends insisted on chipping to for cleaning, and Venmo'd us $500. Since there were 10 of them, it was a great deal for them for a weekend away.

Elmer -- Wouldn't you have to spend time reporting your (unlocked) car stolen? What would your insurance agent say about that? Wouldn't police have to spend time looking for it? Do you leave it unlocked because you think it would not be damaged by a thief? bpath -- We must both live in Chicago suburbs. I know that people in mine think we live under a golden dome of protection. There's no need to lock cars left outside overnight, or to remove valuables -- or garage door openers or house keys -- from them. Why lock your house or tell the cleaners not to hang your order on the front door knocker when YOU ARE NOT HOME?

I would have to look for keys to our house to give them to the girls!!! lol We have a code box on our garage door they use to get in. Most of the neighbors and friends even know the code...from when they have had to check on our cats for us.

I think we have keys to Caryn's house, and we have the code for Kalie's house too.

Yes, both DDs do. One lives out of state so rarely uses hers. Thank God the one living close has one. I've only locked myself out once but it was sooo nice to be able to contact her for the extra key. I can trust her implicitly. I could have a thousand dollars in my house that she could need desperately but she wouldn't touch it.

Yes they do and also to our rental. We also have a key to theirs. All of us call first and would never enter without knocking.

I have a key to my mom's house and a remote to her garage door. She has keys to my house. My grown children do have keys to my house too.

I have a key to my parents' house. We watch their house when they are away, and they watch the kids once a week, so we can let ourselves in.

They don't have a key to our house, but they do have the garage code and could get in that way. When we were in Europe, they let themselves in and "cleaned" our entire house then scolded us for being so dirty (and that's being nice). I'm not a fan of letting them in unattended anymore.

Yes, my children have a key. I always had a key to Mom's house and it made both of us feel better.

Yes, my kids all have a key. This is the house they grew up in, so of course, they still had their keys when they moved out. Then we installed a new front door and a new lock and door knob, so we gave each of them the new key.

I have a key to DDs house, and she has a key to her close-by brother's apartment. The other son is clear across the country and so no one needs a key to his place.

DS has a key to our house and we have one to his. We certainly wouldn't enter each other's domain without notification, but it's good to have just in case.

No, but both of them know where our outside key is hidden.
Only our DS has had to go in when we weren't there. He hunts there a lot early in the morning, takes a shower at our house then goes to work. O.K. with us.

DS lives in Arizona, so no, he doesn't have or need a key.

I've never liked the idea of anyone having a key to my home.

I do not have a key to my parents' house, but I live 500 miles away. I think my brother has a key to their house, though; he has lived with them recently and still lives in the same town. Then again, knowing my brother, they might have asked for it back.

I think just our daughter has a key but everyone knows, when you come through the door under the front porch, the key is on the ledge....So now you all know where the key is hidden, when you visit, please take care of the laundry and empty the litter boxes.(and any other cleaning that you'd care to do)......
In our little village, people are very, very trusting and most look after each other's homes...

I wouldn't say this to anyone that knows my sis, but when she and her husband were in transition from selling and buying a new home they stayed with their son and his wife. My sister went through everything, all their personal papers, bills, etc.. Then when she moved out, one of her email's to me made me think she knew her DIL's password and was reading her emails on line. My nephew was talking to me on ICQ and I apologized before hand then asked if his mom had the password to his wife's email. He hesitated and said "yes, do you think I should change the password?" I said yes.

No one is going to go through my stuff and do me that way as long as I can help it.

Yes - our kids here in town have one. Don't think that either one of our DDs have one but one lives out of state and the other in a different town. I have a key to our local one's (DS) house.

Stargazer, that is a very sad story. I wonder how your sister feels so comfortable and so entitled to do this to her grown child and family? People are amazing. Keep her out of your home if you aren't there watching over her shoulder *LOL*

We've lived in our home for 28 years and no one carries a key because we all come in through the garage which has a coded opener like Sandy's. That is until about 6 months ago when we had a city-wide power outage and we couldn't get in. That weekend we got a new loc on the front door (because we it was about time) and extra keys made for everyone including our DD who no longer lives with us. I insisted every key be some bright color (mine looks psychedelic) so we don't look at it one day 10 years from now and ask ourselves "what is this key for?" :-)

It is sad, it's something an unhappy in law might do to spite her mother in law. Our own children could do this to us. My son stole my silver money, but he was only 16 if that makes a difference. I stole a couple of things as a child but ended up shaking from fear that I might have been caught and didn't do it again. I think it is part of growing up becoming an adult, which some people never do.

Son and daughter that live in the same area do.Other son and daughter that live out of state may still have a key but they all know where the extra key is hidden.LOL My X-DIL,DGD and DGS all live with me right now and they have keys.I will be sure to get them all when they move out in a couple of weeks.I don't trust X-DIL not to go through things if I'm out of town.

Neither of our kids have keys to the house. Our daughter lives in GA and our son is in the Philippines for a year or two working for a government contractor. Our neighbor across the street has a key and I have a key to her house. Two of our close friends have keys to the house and I have keys to theirs. They have no children living close either. We have a key hidden outside that Bobby knows about so he doesn't have to carry a key around.

I have a key pad on my garage too, and the one daughter and DGD know the number. The other daughters may have it too, I'm not sure. They can always call me and get it if I'm out of town.

My son and DIL that live up the street both have keys to our house,and i ahve a key to theirs,i also have one of their garage door openers.My other son that lives in the next town over also has a key.The other 2 kids live too far away.

My oldest son has a key to the door and a garage door opener.
My older sister has a key to the door.
My MIL has a key to the door.
I don't have a key to the front door.
I am not sure if DH does or not. Probably not.
My youngest son does not have a key. He doesn't come to visit unless we are home.

I don't even have a key to my house.

I have never had a key to any house I have lived in.
The two houses I grew up in didn't have keys.
The first house, my Grandmother's house, the door didn't
even latch. You just pushed it to in the door frame and
if it was a windy day you had to put a heavy box against it.

Now days, if I go anywhere, it is always with my wife.
She locks the doors and has the key.

I've always had a key to my Parent's Home. Which is now my home. But, adult children live to far away now. They don't have keys. I should probably give them one. I don't think about keys because I use the Garage Door access.
