Painting primed interior doors

Hello everyone!

We are embarking on a project to replace interior doors at our cottage. We purchased factory primed molded doors (?MDF). We are learning how to hang them (ha ha), and I will then paint them. Of course, I have a few questions.

1) is it necessary to prime the doors again? I was just going to sand them a bit

2) I am going to use SW ProClassic (semi gloss) in a BM color. Do they need the chip, or can I just tell SW the name of the color?

3) Planning on two coats. Sand between? or can I skip this?

4) length of drying time prior to handling (ie. flipping over on sawhorses or rehanging)

5) Where do I find Chinex brushes? I usually use Purdy from HD, but willing to go the "extra mile" if necessary.

Thanks so much! I couldn't get anything done around the house without consulting this website first!

I can answer most of your questions, but not #2. You do not need to reprime the doors, just sand lightly with a fine sandpaper or sanding sponge and vacuum off the dust. Sand lightly between coats of ProClassic and vacuum dust. Drying time depends on humidity. Personally, I like to wait 24 hours before recoating. Refer to directions on paint can. SW carries Purdy Chinex brushes - at least mine does. If you have time, you can order Corona brushes online at thepaintstore.com. That's were I got my supply of them.

I was just at SW this morning . They have all the BM colors in their database and told me they do not need a chip since the color 'recipe' is already on file/in the computer. I happened to have a BM color chip with me anyway, but it wasn't necessary.

I would say you definitely want something the mfg says is paintable. IMO, mfg's are pretty good at putting what you need to know on the package. For interior, you could use something like DAP Dynaflex 230. For exterior, I really like GE XST. It is paintable white silicone. It costs a little more, but caulk is like paint IMO, even the expensive stuff is cheap when you consider the labor of using it and redoing it if you do not use a premium product. zobeet, The FPE primer will be fine as long as it's covered with paint. Peeling and other issues are caused by dirty surfaces, moisture penetration from backside, etc. If you prepped the surface properly, the primer will not cause any disappointments. Paint over the waterbase with at least 2 coats of quality acrylic paint. Michael

I have absolutely no issues with using the proclassic primer and didn't need to practice with it at all. I guess I just don't get that. I also have used many a brush, but like the nylon for this application. I don't have brush strokes...but I don't paint as much as a pro so perhaps it's use and use and use :) I think that people are reading the information in my clipping incorrectly. The COLOR code I put in there is for a color called Woodsey Brown which is an exterior color (you typically get more deep tones in exterior colors) but the PAINT is NOT and exterior paint. Just the color! The proclassic primer adhears to ANY surface, without sanding. I love the stuff because I've used it on some very glossy surfaces and it's held like magic! I do wash surfaces and make sure they're free of dust and dirt, but I rarely sand anymore. My professional painter was very skeptical but is now sold on the quality of these two products together. The primer is a gem, and the quality of the top coat is wonderful as well. I like a high quality finish and a strong finish as well...and together these two will give you that in any combination of colors ;)

Thanks for the information.

I bought some Purdy chinex brushes at HD. (it's a type of fiber, not a brand. I didnt' realize that)

Heading to SW later today to get the paint.

Hopefully, painting will get started this weekend.

Absolutely reprime. To call what they put on doors "primer" should be illegal. If you don't reprime, you'll think you are painting a chalkboard and the first coat will be sucked into the door before the finish has had time to lay down. A high-quality, resin rich primer will properly seal the door and make that first coat of finish much easier to apply with better looking results.
