There's something about meeting CFers in real life

I was just over on the Conversations side commenting about Linda's new Rav and it just felt so personal talking to someone I know. I mean, I met Linda and I feel like I know her as a friend. I love having talking to everyone here but I definitely feel a special kinship to those I've met in person. When are y'all all comin' to HOUSTON to see me??? C'mon, I have extra beds (at least while the kids are away at school!!!)

Well, if you have a free room I just may have to go VERY soon! Thanks for the invite and I will be calling you to make reservations. Do you serve breakfast? LOL!

All kidding aside! I've met lowspark on many occasions and we have always had a great time together! I love her and her wonderful family! Houston is such a great place... I love to visit but wouldn't want to live there because of the traffic. Yep, I'm really a small town girl at heart.

I would have helped the babies as well. After all, it was interference with the Momma that put them in that predicament. We have skunks, racoons (VERY few), foxes, hawks (more than one kind), people's dogs & cats, and others. The worst attack on our chickens was a dog. The racoon got in the chicken coop one night, but our Roo stood up to him, and called us: we had no casualties. The fox got hit on the nearby main road, and frankly I was saddened & relieved at the same time. I was sad for the loss of a beautiful creature, but I was relieved for our chickens. I have helped wild birds and animals. I have a decent success rate. I have taken in lost dogs and and cats/kittens, and either reunited them with their owners or found homes for all or them--without euthanasia being a part of it. This story saddens me because all of the wildlife rehabs were unavailable in one way or another--even for just some information. I prefer Victoria's approach: action out of caring. I am sure she did not incite a population explosion in raccoons by helping here. I am sure many more than 4 will be run over this summer in her area by cars. We cannot micromanage nature. We can only do what we believe is right based on the information (or lack of) that we have at the time. As far as the ants being effected, what if one of the raccoons doesn't make it, becomes extra food for ants, causes a population explosion in ants, which means extra food for birds, the owlets get fed along with starlings who carry disease to humans. I personally know 2 people were seriously ill because of this. I still have no problem with starlings coming in my yard. What I am trying to say is that there is no way to know what happens. it is not quite the same as placing a fox in a hen house. At least the raccoons and their new surrounding s have a chance to seek what nature will deal them. As far as I can tell, nature prefers equilibrium. I like animals and will help again in the future. I did not use soapstone, but I do know some people in the KF in the Cville area who used soapstone, and one person IRL who DIY'ed a soapstone counter. Actually, just south of Charlottesville, is the Alberene Soapstone Company, which I think is the only remaining active soapstone quarry in the United States. They can either do the fabrication themselves, or work with a local fabricator, or sell you the slab and let you DIY. The KF person from the area used the stone fabricator I used, and said she was very happy with the results.

Bumblebeez, Bonnie (the dog) is not allowed on the bed and doesn't sleep there. But her attitude toward life is it's SO exciting and it's all about play, so every once in a while she jumps up and does two or three high-speed roughshod circles on the bed and jumps back down. That's her idea of a good time. The problem is when she did it the other day she'd just come in from outside. Oakley, it's a silk-filled duvet (a huge splurge for me) inside a new white cotton Battenberg duvet cover. It (and flannel sheets) is the only cover my bed needs in the winter. The new duvet cover takes my breath away, it's so pretty -- but not so neat with dirty dog footprints on it. Ttodd, I do the same soap recipe as you, except I used Fels Naptha instead of Ivory. I still feel the need to use Tide every few wash loads, as it does the best job. Still, as you point out, the homemade saves a ton of money. I got the recipe off the web. Bonnie is a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. I used to breed and show SCWTs, but my line was calm. Bonnie is a high-speed wackadoodle who charges through life without thinking. I love her, but I often wish she had a turn down switch. She is young, but I have the feeling she won't change until arthritis forces change on her. OTOH, it does my heart good to see how good she feels and how much she loves life. Vivian, great picture! So cute. It's not her hair, and she doesn't shed. It's her muddy little feet that did in the duvet. We live where it rains 9 months of the year. I guess I could wash and dry her feet at the door every time she comes back in from outside. But seriously, that sounds too much like work. I've lived by -- and have given -- Magnaverde's advice forever. My living room is dog proof. But I've also wanted a white bed. I thought I'd give it a try. I think my decorating mistake may be that the white should be in the walls, not on the bed. The cover is washable, but it's a hassle to get the duvet in and out of it. Franksmom, what's your floor cleaner recipe, please? Alisonn, what fabric is your slip cover? Ten years is a lot of washes! I'm with you I would not buy a white sofa. The more I think about it the more I think a hall runner might be the answer, as it would take a lot of the dirt off the feet of all three of my dogs. Ya think?

Sally, I think it might be me you are thinkning of. I don't live IN Perth, but within cooee- a little over an hour away. Do try to come visit your brother, Perth and WA in general are great places. There are lots of good flight deals going on all the time so keep your eye out for one. (And besides a passport you'll need a visa but they're not very expensive and easy to get unless you have a criminal record, ha ha :-). ) I haven't heard from Daisy in ages. I think of her often though and hope she's OK.

I agree, it is really special to personally meet any CFer! I met, Sherry (sheshebop) Peppi and Annie and it was great fun. Now, when ever they post something that is personal I feel very connected. I hope to spend more time with them and others.

Today, My DH and I are meeting Jimster at a restaurant on Cape Cod. Monday or Tuesday, we will meet Lou (Hawk) in PA. How lucky am I. I'm so new to the forum and will have met 5 CFers already.

I don't have a large home but would be glad to have any CFer visit me in Michigan anytime.

LOL May I sometimes plan my vacations around CFers. My family knows I will peel off to spend time with 'the best friends I never met'.

Not only that but any out of state schools pretty much must have a CF 'Auntie' or 'Uncle' for my kid nearby, LOL. I looked at Rice more than once as a school since I knew it was in your territory. And, I offer the same for anyone here planning on sending his/her munchkin to Lost Angeles.

Yes, that "connected" feeling is very special indeed!

I haven't had a vacation in a while, but now that I am once again gainfully employed I am going to try to change that.

I get to Chicago several times a year to visit my daughter, so I get together with Peppi quite often. And most times Annie and Sherry make the trip at the same time so I am fortunate to spend time with them, too.

When my mom wintered in Florida I wish I would have made some arrangements, but I haven't been down there in years.

Thanks for the invite, May! I would love to come visit some time! I may surprise you one day!

And if anyone ever gets near Minneapolis or Western Wisconsin, I am a hop, skip and jump from either of them. I have lots of room, and/or I could set up a place to meet.

Wait just a minute...I've been to see you. I often think of your renovated kitchen and your tile that caused me to rethink tile vs hardwood. And your to-die-for built-in in the family room

As I've said before, I lost my CF virginity with Jessica. I didn't know the protocol or I would have entertained her and the boys better.

After three months of scraping wallpaper, my guest room ready and waiting.

My first ever CFer meet-up was yesterday with Karen (lakemayor) and her DH. We arranged to meet for lunch at 1:00. I was there a few minutes early and, as I was explaining to the host that I was meeting a couple I had never seen before, I heard voices behind me say, "That's us!". Immediately, it was like I was with old friends.

Although the food was OK where we ate, I had expected better. That's the risk you take choosing a place where you haven't eaten before. The conversation and companionship were excellent however. We had a great afternoon together and said good-bye after watching the sun go down in Cape Cod Bay.

I hope to meet other CF friends in the future. I recommend it.

I've only met one CFer (so far!) That was Riverrat and her charming husband. Sherry and her DH were a near miss b/c of car trouble... It is pretty fun, and adds to the connection, for sure. So does participating in a swap... there's a special bond with someone you don't know you researched and bought things for, and with someone who sent you fun things, too!

I can make the Woodlands in about seven hours depending on the traffic in Dallas. Hour and twenty minutes via SWA. Wish we still had our office there...had a lot fun in Houston over the years. Look out May, you never know who just may show up pal. Yes, I'll take the back seat...LOL!

Jim, glad to hear that you and Karen got together. Hope to hear more about your meeting, what you had to eat, and of course a couple of pics.

Yes, I understand that pics must be taken and posted. I've thought of it as an unwritten rule and now it's right here in black and white on my screen. Karen took photos and will post them when she has a chance. They are still traveling, so it will be a few days before you see the pics. I don't like to think about how I will look but I am trying to be a good sport about it. Next time this happens I will take photos with my own camera so I can Photoshop them heavily and make myself look life Gregory Peck.

May, I wish I could remember how many times we have gotten together. At the moment I think it has been 6-7 times?

All of you CF'ers have to meet May. She is so much fun!

I want to meet May! It's on my TO DO list. I'm not doing very well with my resolution to meet more of you, but I am going to get to meet Mustangs at the beginning of next month, so I'm excited! Oh, and I get to see Weed again on the way to meet Cathy, so I'm looking forward to that. Yes, meeting definitely helps bonding, doesn't it?

Ok Peppi, Stop on by now and knock on my door, I'm home!!! We will have to get together soon. I know that you and Sherry were at Amanda's wedding and I wish I could have been there with you.

Just got home this afternoon from our trip out East. After we get settled in I'll post pictures from our visit with Jim (Jimster) and Lou (Hawk). Great guys! We had a wonderful time.

I wish I could have arranged a visit with Jo (Jojoco) but we just couldn't work it in this time. Maybe soon Jo. Thanks again for the invite.

I have had the opportunity to meet a whole bunch of CF'ers, 23 all together...give or take. Most of them on our Rte 66 road trip but who could ever forget our NYC forum get together. Actually I do forget it.....need some help with filling in the blanks from the guy in the back seat! LOL

My biggest claim to CF fame is having prepared dinner for Ann T and her wonderful husband.... nobody else has done that!

Jim I wish I had know you live in Cape Cod. We visited there this fall and loved it. Spent more time there than we planned. Also missed Tricia and sweetie pie san on that trip. Bummer......

I have met 28, some are no longer members and I may have forgotten a few. I'm sure there are others who have met more than that.

I am eager to add Claire de Luna to my list in a few weeks...yea!

That is too fun Mustangs, 28? I would love to meet you when my DH and I go to Florida in January. I think you live in the Tampa area, yes? We stay in Largo which isn't really very far.

Chase, you were brave to cook for Moe. He's accustomed to the best. I read the posts re your trip and I know you had a good time, eating at Arnold's etc. There is more to see and do. Let's get together next time.

There is an expression, "sand in your shoes". I think all of you have sand in your shoes and I will see you in the future.

Jim, we enjoyed the Cape, Arnold's was a stop but not at all what I think the Cape is about.

We really enjoyed Chatham, such a lovely spot and the wildlife refuge along the coast is amazing. My favourite though would have to be Provincetown, what a special place.

Gellchom and Tami - he is still in HS. Tami, had I known how close you are, I would have pushed for him to apply - but it didn't happen. Oberlin looks like a GREAT match school for him (not musically)! I seriously want a trusted CF auntie (or uncle) in the neighborhood if my kid goes too far out of state. And I make the same offer to those who want to send their kids to the Lost Angeles area; I'll be parental back-up.
