I'm not sure a kitchen is *ever* really done. :) Besides decorating more and tweaking here and there, ours is pretty much finished though .. I guess. This was a total DIY project done by my DH and I. We live in a 1910 cottage and were looking to keep flavor of the home, but also have a working kitchen for a family of five.

The stove is a restored 1948 Tappan Deluxe.

The Hoosier cabinet is being used as my free standing pantry area.

My double ovens are hiding behind that pocket door which is left open when they are in use and until the cool.

The sink is a English Belfast sink, which we found at an antique store that imports them.

The floors are the original heart pine, all the pine beadboard is new though.

My center light I found at a local antique mall, my DH rewired and hung it for me. It's out of a school that was built in the 1920's.

Just beautiful and so creative with your mix of old and new. I'm jealous -- maybe someday my diy kitchen will be done too.

ACK .. I'm so, so, so sorry! I was trying to post this on the kitchen forum as a done kitchen. I'm sure you guys are thinking I've finally lost my mind! Is there any way to erase it over here?

I am a "rustic girl", but I like your kitchen very much. It has a lot going on, but it is balanced and comfortable. I have the Electrolux gas top slide-in and it is working out well. Enjoy your new space.

Thanks so much everyone for the generous comments! Gsciencechick, for the white on the walls, ceilings and cabinets we brought a subway tile in and had it color matched at SW. The walls and ceilings are painted with a semi gloss, the cabinets are painted with Cabinet Coat. This is actually the same white we've used on all of the trim on the inside of our home, since the bathrooms use the same white subways. It's a warm white, not quite an off white, but not bright white either. After the girls get home from school I'll go out to the cottage outback and see if we have a can around. Garden18C .. How cool you had a kitchen growing up so similar to this one!! We're in NC. I honestly love this stove, it amazes me every day it's 60 years old and still is turning out great meals.

Thanks for the feedback. The landscaping happened three years ago, but I still love it (my wife has a more love/hate relationship with the garden). We've never spent as much time in the back as we would like, but I think that's going to change now that it's more integrated with the house. Certainly our almost three year old is now able to go out back on his own and we can keep an eye on him. I was preparing his lunch today and he asked to go out. When I called him in for lunch he had tomato all over his face from picking the cherry tomatoes off the vine (it's either that or the berries. and in another month the figs). It doesn't get much better than that. Here's the view out the open french doors this afternoon from the prep area. circuspeanut: Yeah, when we decided to switch the large pendant for a ceiling light I wanted to get a matching one from Cherry Tree Designs and was very bummed to find out they don't make them any more. I'm just glad we got our lights back in March rather than waiting until they were ready to be installed last month. We might get one now from Arroyo Craftsman, which has similar designs in metal. As far as the green trim, early on we though that having stained trim in the kitchen might compete with the cabinets, so decided for painted trim (the trim is fir and the cabinets cherry). When the breakfast room trim was finished it was so lovely I really regretted that choice, but the kitchen trim was already primed. My wife and I got many paint samples and considered many different directions for the kitchen trim before picking the color, but in the end we're very happy with it.

mal First it's your home & only you truly know what is best suited for it and your family - The responses re: concern above I think give a good general opinion about resale - that has the potential to be a negative. lascatx brings the pt to light I would tend to agree w/that op. Not opposed - necessarily - just a different op - it's not my home.... try to imagine a time when the house is being sold - the first thing the broker will ask is "what is this room?" - If you have other options to put the mud area esp I would go that route - since you do come in throught the basement why not try to retrain your family to let that be the drop off zone - cubbies/hooks/baskets etc.... When you put appliances & plumbing in DR it would be difficult & a big expense to change that back in the event of resale & a broker saying changing it back will mean X$$ Perhaps contacting a broker or 2 before you decide may help in understanding what the market calls for in your area. To me, esp if you have other areas to designate, it just seems like a not clearly defined room - mud area & kit should be 2 separate imo.... Try to imagine being the person who is your potential buyer - walk in your own front door and what do you like/not like - Could a potential buyer walk in and say "do I take my shoes off here or take the cake out of the oven" Good luck

Oh zip is all so pretty and charming and just so perfect ! I just love everything. The oven hiding is so cool. I think the hood over the Tappan turned out great. And that wonderful ceiling. Well you done it girl. It looks fab.....ulous ! c

Zipdee, don't feel bad at all about posting it here! None of us have seen just the finished pics!

As you know, I lovelovelove your kitchen. You don't know how hard it is for me NOT to contact a magazine behind your back and make them find you to do a story about it!

Just for grins, you really should post that scary-pit photo again. I don't know if people will realize that your kitchen is not just gorgeous now, but also that you basically had to rebuild the whole thing!

Yes, I'm so glad you posted it here. I love how everything turned out. I think the hood is just perfect with the stove and adds that special unexpected zippy element.

Very nicely done! A creative combination of new and old. I offer a toast to many great meals and happy hours there.

I wish I could show the pix to my mom- she would love the all-white look! Her kitchens are all white and I know she would never have anything else.

I'm glad you posted it here, even though it was unintended. The space looks great and I really admire the fact that you did it all yourself. I am astonished at the 'reveal' photos as I had had no idea that the kitchen was going to be open on the sink wall to the eating area. That really enhances the look.

Thank you for sharing the photos and the step by step progress.

Your kitchen is outstanding, and I'm glad that you "made a mistake" and posted it here! It's much like the dream farmhouse kitchen that I have in my head, including your Hoosier cabinet. And I have a weakness for schoolhouse light fixtures - they are nostalgic and they cast great light.

I am awed that you DIYed this project. Congratulations!

I can't tell you all how warmed I am by the kindness here. I don't know what to say besides thank you all so much for the gracious and generous comments. I know I've shown these pics to death over here, so really thank you for understanding and making my mistake a happy one. Also I have a lot of gratitude to express to everyone that has helped me and offered advice as the kitchen was being built. It was wonderful to be able to log on here and have all of you talented people as a sounding board.

I just love your kitchen. I grew up in a house with that same kind of light fixture in the kitchen. I can envision some vintage linens with cherries on them!

Awsome! Awesome! AWESOME! Can you tell I'm a child of the 80's? I love how the light compliments everything too.

My mom bought me a hoosier the exact same shade of green as yours - it's still in my basement though.

Zipdee, I just love your kitchen!

I've been doing searches for a china cabinet and the Hoosiers always show up. I can't use one in my home but they just bring a big smile to my face everytime I see a nice one.

Must remind me of something happy when I was a child. :)

Could a kitchen possibly be better? Zipdee, it's charming, functional, classic, & above all, personal. You made your own unique statement. It's not like every other kitchen you see in the mags these days, yet you managed to make it feel very fresh & current at the same time. A+! Enjoy!!

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to log on this weekend, thanks so much everyone for the kind comments!

Jejvtr .. when we first looked at the house when it was still on the market, we thought the area probably was an enclosed porch too. After my DH went under the house to do the home inspection before buying, he could see that it was set on the original foundation and the flooring system was all one with the house. Then when we did the remodel, all the lumber was original in the side and back walls too. So I'm not positive why it was built with a shed roof, but it an original room to the house. We think maybe it was originally built as a sunroom sitting type area, at a later date it was partitioned into a really dark/drab bathroom and a backdoor no-mans land type of entry. A lot of the house has been remuddled kind of badly, so we had to 'read' how the house was built when we deconstructed areas.

I know I've commented on your beautiful kitchen during the process, but have to again. It's so pretty. That green cabinet is the icing on the cake. You have to feel like you're outdoors with all those fabulous windows.
