Dim Sum Yum Yum!

Jonliu's post on childhood memories got me thinking about my ONE Dim Sum experience in NYC Chinatown, buy it was a culinary adventure I will never forget! The place was packed, the waiters all spoke only Chinese, and you had to really hustle to get the stuff off the carts since everyone was competing for the delicacies. I had never had this type of Chinese food before, but I really liked the idea because I am a HUGE fan of brunch, of any type. This is my idea of foodie heavan--tons of people socilializing and a cornicopia of great food. So it got me thinking and googling dim sum and I was AMAZED at the skill and craftmanship displayed in making the amazing array of fillings and wrappings! I could NEVER manage that, I have enough trouble with just making a PIE!! I'm wondering if maybe Dim Sum is best experienced as going out to eat rather than eating in, at least for me. I might be able to manage it at home if I could pick up some of the stuff frozen in advance, but I'm not sure what's available or in my price range. I read you can freeze some of it in advance. I love deep fried spring rolls but I can't imagine them freezing well after frying--maybe freeze BEFORE frying. I could also maybe manage to shape some things into wonton wrappers for steaming. But those steamed buns, the doughy kind, they seem like the holy grail. I don't think there's any dim sum near me, closest would be NYC an hour and a half away, and no way am I waking up Sunday morning and going into the city, lol! Well, maybe once, for the adventure!

So what are your dim sum experiences, recipes or recommendations for cookbooks or restaurants?
