floor stenciling with craft paint

I am going to be painting the wood floor in my living room. I want to put down a couple to three coats of interior latex and then put some stencils and stamps on top, then polyurethane over the top of that for protection.

Would there be any problem using regular acrylic craft paint for those stencils/stamps or do I need to use actual house paint?

Thanks for any ideas/help!

Hi Queen,
You'll need to use a FLOOR-paint, not a wall-paint.
* Good floor-paints are ~ $25/gal & up.
* Craft-paint...NO.

* I'm not sure I would IMO!
* It would be just as easy to sand the floor, & do 3 coats of a good Polyurethane, each coat a day apart. No furniture back in for a WEEK though!!!
* I'd give this a lot of thought...

YES, you can use your acrylic craft paint for your design. I would suggest Folk-Art brand (their pigment colors).

but as Faron mentioned, hardwood floors - wow is there someway you could just get them refinished instead of going the route of painting.

Are you sure those are "tile" and not stone? Some of those pieces have the look of stone to me. This is hard to determine with 2D photos...but some of the smaller inset tiles look to be limestone. Right now, even if they are 'just tile', you have a HIGH VALUE floor. You may not enjoy it for what it is, but it is still a VERY VALUABLE floor. If it is STONE then the price just went UP! Now imagine damaging the value of your very valuable floor by painting it. Yep. It would the same as installing $25K worth of imported Italian Marble counter tops and having your hubby paint it some cool 'Star Wars' theme (or golf...or football, or NASCAR or whatever hubby is into)! Zoinks! Makes me cringe just thinking about it. The floor you have is already a high-value asset. You will want to ensure that you replace "like for like" should you wish to change the look of it. I doubt that painting and stenciling it will do that for the home. It is your call....but be aware of what it is you are about to do (to the value of the floor/home).

I painted mine a few years ago. I didn't use a primer and I used Behr wall paint for the base along with chalk paint for the stencil. I also used several coats of polyurethane. I used the poly along the way, not just at the end. I have no chipping and the floors still look awesome. I would consider myself an experienced diyer but this is a pretty simple job.

When I was first married, the popular craft was either sponge painting the walls or feather painting the walls. I did the feather painting and it turned out great. You use a natural feather, feather duster and dip it lightly in the colors you like. Dab at the walls, overlap, use as many colors as you like. It was cheap, sorry inexpensive, and looked cute. It was very easy to paint over when I got tired of it. I did not try stenciling, but I did not have the patience! It is pretty. If you have a Hobby Lobby or Micheal's try there. ETA: Your colors would adapt well to feather painting and I would do all the walls.

We did the upstairs where our bedrooms are. We didn't have nice hardwood down, but couldn't afford to put down carpeting like we wanted so I painted them.

I just used regular latex paint and kids painted floor with folk art paints for the fun stuff. Then we sealed it with a couple coats of urethane or something like made for floors (it was latex I think). It held up incredibly well and cleaned great with the finish over the top.
