Package from Canada!!!

You may recall my unsuccessful attempt at making Chase's "chili sauce" back in August. Rather than take offense at my rather public failure with her recipe, Sharon she asked if she could send me some. Uhh, yes please?! When my mailman knocked on the door this morning the last thing I expected was a package from Sharon. But here it was, gifts for the whole family:

Two pints of the chili sauce. I tried really hard not to open one until I had an appropriate dish for it to accompany. But literally while writing this post just I lost my will. LOVE it!!! Seriously. Looks and tastes nothing like what I made. Where the heck did I go wrong? This seems really versatile; I can see it being used with any meal of the day.

The cutest little moose fanny pack for my daughter. She was so excited; she loves anything that can be considered a purse! A Canada T-shirt for my son (Yes, it's the right size!) A souvenier tote as well.

A jar of Canadian "sweet and smokey" mustard. This was probably just a lucky guess, but I'm a mustard fiend. I eat it with a spoon. Sometimes on bread. Occassionally even as a condiment! This one is wonderful; not like any I've had before. Conveniently I had hot dogs in the fridge, so suddenly dinner plans got real simple.

Last but not least, why she's called the Pickle Lady. I was instructed to chill them before eating, and that took a lot of self control. Once deemed chilled I cut one up. Awesome. No wonder she's famous for them. They won't take up space in the fridge for long!

Sharon, thanks SO much for your generous gifts. No one needs me to tell them what a sweetheart you are, but I don't mind reiterating it.

Ok, back to the fridge for a spoonful of chili sauce. Did I mention I love it?

FOAS, You are lucky to get those dills! I've made them and can't seem to keep them in stock for friends! Enjoy! BTW, the kids are adorable!!

I know this is an old post but I just did this with a Samsung side by side. So just in case someone else needs help... The fridge has two back wheels left and right and one wheel in the center front. The base foam is quite thick but it has support extrusions running front to back on the both sides and in the center. There are short extrusions on the back left and right sides to hold the wheels I guess but don't support the fridge. I cut those small sections out exposing the back wheels (didn't cut through the whole base). On the front I opened the doors and removed the plastic guard on the bottom of the fridge. On the left and right there were two small extrusions on the foam base so just in case that things wouldn't catch on the way off (backwards) I cut those off as well. I then vacuumed up the styrofoam dust on around and under for good measure. I placed two 3/4 inch thick, 4 inch wide and 2 feet (ish) long plywood pieces I had lying around under the wheels on the back. They provided a nice low angle for rolling the fridge off the styrofoam base. Standing behind the fridge I tilted it back onto the plywood runners and gently eased it off the packing base with no problem by myself. Hope this is a help to someone in the future.

With "few exceptions", most of us here in the forum, recommend against "Appliance Packages" (All appliances by the same manufacturer). Why?----No one manufacturer excells at every kitchen appliance, and in many cases they are just "Rebadged units", (Made by another manufacturer) and fancy label put on and perhaps a cosmetic change or two and a BIG Increase in price. Couple Examples: (1) Miele Great Dishwashers and Speed Oven but a number of post related to temp problems with their recent ovens some similar post of their older ovens too. They do not make their own Fridges (Yet) alto there are those that claim the company that makes the Miele Fridges is under "Miele Supervision"---I would have to see that for myself. (2) Electrolux, except for a post (Here and there), Elux ovens are well thought of both performance and reliability wise. Their Fridges were frought with problems earlier, and reading current reviews it is a "Crapshoot" to even buy one now---(about 50-50 as far as Good vs Bad reviews). (3) SZ - Wolf. Many ppl like the SZ fridges alto there are negative reviews too. My big problem here is they use the Whirlpool variable speed compressor (Embraco) as do most manufactures now, and some say the interiors (On some Models) are not as up to date,(Fully Adjustable Shelves) (Led Lighting etc etc) as other fridges costing less. So "I" have a bit of a problem justifying their prices for fridges. Many like the open"Flame Thrower" (22k-23k)burners which Wolf doesn't offer. As far as Wolf Ovens go, one has to search very hard to find "Negative Reviews" on Wolf Ovens. I hope this gives you a bit of a perspective on how "many" of us here on GW relate to "Appliance Packages". Great package! Love the penzey's stuff! I picked up a small container of the creamy peppercorn dressing mix last time I was there but I have yet to try it (had to use up all my other salad dressing stuff first!!) Everything else sounds great too -- esp. the eggplant pesto!! Looking forward to pix!

Copied from my AOL news feed; The U.S. Department of Agriculture has identified some of the plant species in bags of unsolicited seeds arriving in mailboxes across the United States. Officials have warned the shipments of mystery seeds, which appear to have originated in China, could be invasive plant species. So far, however, the species appear to be innocuous. At least 14 of the seed species had been identified as of July 29, according to Deputy Administrator Osama El-Lissy of the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. They includes mustard, cabbage and morning glory as well as herbs like mint, sage, rosemary and lavender. He said hibiscus and roses were also found. CBS News confirmed that residents in all 50 states have reported receiving the suspicious packages of seeds. The USDA said if you receive the packets of seeds, do not plant them and contact your state plant regulatory official. Although the species identified so far are harmless, plant experts have warned that seeds from other parts of the world could damage crops. State agriculture officials in Virginia warned, "Invasive species wreak havoc on the environment, displace or destroy native plants and insects and severely damage crops. Taking steps to prevent their introduction is the most effective method of reducing both the risk of invasive species infestations and the cost to control and mitigate those infestations." Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller urged people to be cautious. "It could be a bacteria. It could be another virus, some kind of invasive species," Miller told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. Robin Pruisner, a state seed control official at the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in Iowa, told Reuters that she has heard reports of a coating of possible insecticide or fungicide on the seeds, which could prove especially harmful to crops. "I've had people describe to me that the seeds are coated with something purple. I haven't had it in my hands yet, but it sounds an awful lot like a seed treatment," she said. The Agriculture Department has said the packages are most likely part of a "brushing" scam, in which a seller sends unsolicited items to someone and then posts false positive customer reviews to boost sales. "Brushing scams involving seed packets in international mail shipments are not uncommon," the USDA said. "U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has intercepted similar seed shipments in recent years." Phylissia Clark of the Better Business Bureau told CBS DFW that if you are a victim of brushing, "your identity has been compromised."

FOAS! So glad to see everything arrived in one piece! Also really happy to see those smiling faces. Great looking kids. Glad the T-Shirt fit!

I forgot to mention the mustard in my note. Canada is the largest grower of mustard seeds in the world (who'd a thunk!) and that mustard is made right here in Toronto. The company makes 35 different types of mustards and I think I've tried most of them! mind you I haven't tried the one I sent you but it sounded interesting so I got one for myself too!

Anyhow I was happy to send you some chile after your "episode" in August, should sent you a whole batch! Now it looks like I'll have to send Cathy some pickles! LOL

International transportation of food stuff? !

I always have to think of devious ways to send food stuff across the boarder. One time I drove from NY to Toronto, and forgot that fresh fruits could be a problem.

Have you tried to eat 5 mangos and one pineapple in one hour? LOL!

I will have to give Chase's famous recipe a try.

FOAS, which one of those two beautiful kids is you favorite child? :-)

Darch, funnily enough there is no restriction on sending homemade goods to the States. Commercial food products can be sent as long as you provide a product code that I have never been able to locate.

I may have inadvertently forgot to mention the mustard on the customs slip ; )

Wow! Wish my "chase recipes" would not have turned out. LOL. Lucky you FOAS. Sharon, that was a very nice thing you did. Lots of very nice people on this form for sure.

Wow, that's a great gift. You are right Sherry, CFer's are some of the nicest people I've ever met. What beautiful children and the moose fanny pack is adorable.

I'm getting a lot of vicarious enjoyment from this.

I thought of a devious plan like Sherry had re cooking failures for getting a package of goodies from Sharon. However, I think it's too late. You've pre-empted us. :-)

Great pic of the kids. Mine are all grown. I still have a couple of young grandchildren though. The older I get, the more I enjoy seeing other people's kids. That pic made me smile. Their happiness is so apparent.

How cool is that?! Lucky you FOAS! Sharon is a sweetheart and too cool. That chili sauce rocks and we all know about those famous dills. My nephews named her "The Pickle Lady From Canada" years ago. We won't mention how many years or I'll have to buy Sharon a drink....LOL! Good looking kids...your DS for sure looks like you. Enjoy!!!

Oh yes, what a nice surcie and what cute kids. I can tell your daughter did like the moose, look at that smile! Her brother looks like he's putting up with her, LOL.

Love that chile sauce too, I made a dozen jars of it because it makes awesome sloppy joes, the Princess and Bud love it just dumped into a pan of browned ground beef. I think I'll be in trouble if I use any myself for anything else!

I have a jar of that brand of mustard in the fridge, it's really good, Chase gave it to me when I went to Toronto.

I sent fresh garlic once to Ann T too, I think I forgot what it was and just had to write "gift" on the customs slip....

Thanks for all the nice comments! Annie, you almost had it right, it's me that he's putting up with. Dcarch, the blond one is my favorite. ;-)

I'm really loving the sauce. I think I'm going to drive by the farmstand later to see if they still have some bulk tomatoes. As generous as Sharon was, I'm afraid two jars just isn't going to last long around here, LOL!

Been to Canada beautiful,Hubby goes hunting up there.Over on kt we have once a year you get a package together send to one person.I sent mine but I got a girl in Canada.When my box arrived most everything was gone.They said inspectors sometimes open boxes people raid them.I was so dissappointed,I spent time picking right gifts

Bulldinkie, it is the very odd box that actually gets opened and that happens on both sides of the border. Custom inspectors are not "raiding" boxes but occasionally items that are not allowed are removed. It is annoying when that happens. I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that the custom inspectors are dishonest.

I have been sending and receiving stuff of all kinds to Canada's many provinces for the past 20 years, I have never ever lost one single item.

The only time I have ever lost anything to the US was an entire parcel I sent to Lori. It never did appear and that was a serious bummer.

Customs did open one of many of the care packages I sent to Meredith while she was in Australia. They confiscated the dill pickles and left her a note stating they were not allowed into Australia.

Other than that never an issue yet each time I send something I worry a tad that it will be opened or worse yet customs will be charged.

She in Canada got my package from Pa, her package to me was it looked raided,things broken,alot was missing she said they serch some people take what they want.Thats all I know.I wasnt expecting to see that.No note with it just alot missing.A Mess..

FOAS, You have a couple of beautiful children - and yes, I immediately thought that your son was either being very patient with that hug from sis or having to pose for a picture, but he looks like he's very good at being patient and smiling at the same time. I bet it's partly because of the wonderful treats Sharon sent and he gets to eat.
