dcs floor model package vs thermadore package

We are building a house & have come up with two appliance packages from different dealers.

Package 1. from PC Richards

Thermadore 36" all gas comm. range. PRG366GH

Thermadore 36" built in, french door ref. T36IT71FNS

Thermadore D/W DWHD630GCP

Thermadore built in microwave MBES

Range insert VCI236DS

Range hood accs

Both have agreed to a package price of $17,383. So do we go with the all new (hopefully) unscratched Thermadore & have all matching appliances but a slightly smaller fridge & no cabinet overlays? or The DCS package with the dual fuel & griddle - each appliance with 1 small scratch - & the larger fridge & bosch d/w that both have cabinet overlays. Weary of buying fl samples but I've heard mixed reviews on Thermadore - & not much at all about DCS. Does it matter if everything matches & is one better for resale/performance?

With "few exceptions", most of us here in the forum, recommend against "Appliance Packages" (All appliances by the same manufacturer).

Why?----No one manufacturer excells at every kitchen appliance, and in many cases they are just
"Rebadged units", (Made by another manufacturer) and fancy label put on and perhaps a cosmetic change or two and a
BIG Increase in price.

Couple Examples:
(1) Miele Great Dishwashers and Speed Oven but a number of post related to temp problems with their recent ovens
some similar post of their older ovens too. They do not make their own Fridges (Yet) alto there are those that claim the company that makes the Miele Fridges is under
"Miele Supervision"---I would have to see that for myself.

(2) Electrolux, except for a post (Here and there), Elux ovens are well thought of both performance and reliability wise. Their Fridges were frought with problems earlier, and reading current reviews it is a "Crapshoot" to even buy one now---(about 50-50 as far as Good vs Bad reviews).

(3) SZ - Wolf. Many ppl like the SZ fridges alto there
are negative reviews too. My big problem here is they use the Whirlpool variable speed compressor (Embraco) as do most manufactures now, and some say the interiors (On some Models) are not as up to date,(Fully Adjustable Shelves) (Led Lighting etc etc) as other fridges costing less.
So "I" have a bit of a problem justifying their prices
for fridges.

Many like the open"Flame Thrower" (22k-23k)burners which
Wolf doesn't offer.
As far as Wolf Ovens go, one has to search very hard to find "Negative Reviews" on Wolf Ovens.

I hope this gives you a bit of a perspective on how "many" of us here on GW relate to "Appliance Packages".

Others here, feel free to correct me if you think I missed a point, or I was a "bit off" on any of my above comments.

I agree in general with dodge59 that in general you should be looking at individual appliances not packages. On the other hand, your DCS package isn't really a package, DCS doesn't make fridges, DWs, etc.

Of those 2 choices I would pick the DCS package. DCS makes good cooking products - I've had a DCS all gas range for nearly 9 years and am still very pleased. There are others on this forum who are also pleased with DCS. I'm not sure what bad things you've heard about DCS. You can always find bad reviews about any product. I'd probably skip the DCS MW - it's most likely a high-priced rebadged Sharp but if you're getting a good scratch and dent price you might be fine. I'd also skip the Bosch DW - too many bad reviews lately - and go with KA or Miele - although if you're paneling it, KA is deeper and might not be flush with your other cabinets.

As far as scratch and dent go, that's a personal decision you'll have to make - are you sure you're getting a good deal on the scratched appliances?

Sounds like you made a very good choice. I'm facing the same situation; Monogram, or Thermadore Pkg. I'm looking at the 36" BI French Pantry Door Fridge, Elec/Conv. Wall Oven and Advantium, or speed oven/micro comb Thermadore has and the 36" Induction cooktop. Very hard to decide which pkg. is better. I'm leaning towards the Thermadore, but I didn't like the Oven, Speed Oven/Micro combination as one has turn knobs and the speed oven is touch screen??? So wierd on that level of appliances they wouldn't match the controls since one sits just above the other. In the GE Monogram, the BI refrigerator didn't seem to have the best use of space with the 1 long slide out drawer amd 2 small crispers and not as many option to move door shelves vs 2 long slide out drawers on the Thermadore. We need the BI refrigerator due to small kitchen walkways, but I'm a bit concerned about reaching the top shelf on the BI refrigerators as I'm 5'3". I can reach the front of the shelf, but not the back??? Has anyone vertically challenged as I had a problem with the height of the 36" French Door Thermadore/GE Monogram BI??? I'm hearing Thermadore's pricing is going up by 7% February 1st!

Wolf seems to have a much better rep for customer service, and I've been very pleased both with how they back up their appliances and with the technology used in their ovens, which also has a nice, long history that helped me feel confident in buying my E Series double oven. I sure haven't been disappointed. The most even and consistent baking I've ever experienced. We bake almost daily. I am happy with my Wolf rangetop. When shopping for ours, I wanted 8 burners, which eliminated the Thermador, although I heard good things about the star burner. I remember reading complaints that Thermador burners click audibly because of the cycling on and off during simmer. Will you have natural gas or propane? I can't remember if Thermador was one of those made for NG and adjusted for propane with an associated loss in BTUs. If you have natural gas, it's not a concern, but was for us with propane. At the time we got ours, I think BlueStar and Wolf ...and maybe Capital... were the only ones with different models made for the different types of fuel. I think there are more now.

If you get Sharp Drawer MW from ebay you get 30 day warranty or you can pay an extra $300 and get it from local Home Depot and get a one year warranty. Antss, Thanks so much for your response. We are a family of four, me, DH and four-year-old twins. When we remodeled our last kitchen we had a 36" full-depth KA French door fridge, and an extra old fridge in the basement for overflow, which we only needed for holidays. We have always had and will have in the new house a chest freezer in the garage. I was just assuming the loss of refrigerated space from the KA full- depth might be an issue. It looks like we will go from 17.5 cu ft in the KA to 14.3 cu ft in the Thermador. We do cook a lot and we do shop at Costco, but I think we always accumulate stuff in our KA because of the depth. Perhaps the counter depth will keep things from getting lost in the back. I'm hoping so. We are open to having an auxiliary fridge if necessary, but somehow it seems like more of a pain to deal with than having an extra freezer. The way the Thermador deal is structured is that if you buy a cooktop and ovens (or a range) you get a free dishwasher. If you add a refrigerator, you get free ventilation. Switching out the ovens won't work to get the deal. The total of just under $14K I listed above above includes a Sharp microwave drawer (obviously not part of the package), but I am open to any undercounter built-in micro. No matter how I figure it, if I want a built-in fridge I can't come in much below this price without severely diminishing quality of the other appliances. The free DW and hood total $3800, so it's quite a lot of difference to make up. So your only item of concern with Thermador is with the ovens? Thanks again for your help! Cintijen

I agree on the appliance package comments above. The sales people really make them appealing though by pointing out "Your stainless will all match and did I mention the rebates available when you buy the whole package?" But when your oven/dishwasher/rangetop/refrigerator is not up to your expectations or just dies on you and it takes days to months for a fix by a specially certified repairman who is only in your area once in a blue moon, is it really worth the stainless matching exactly and the rebate?

On another note, Bosch bought Thermador in the not so distant past. I heard from 2 different appliance sales people in different states that DCS/Fisher Paykel was not doing well and would probably be out of business by year end if they still can't find a buyer by then. But if my heart was really set on them, they would sell them to me. Either way with the DCS package (they get bought or go out of business) what is your warranty worth at that point if something does go wrong?

Lastly, you specced the Thermador range as all gas vs. the dual fuel DCS. Gas ovens are great for roasting but not for baking, so definitely think about how you will use the oven & select the one that truly meets your needs vs a package price point (soggy cupcakes just aren't worth it. LOL!).

Just some food for thought.

I disagree with the salespeople regarding DCS/F&P not doing well. Although, I'm selling a whole lot more Capital these days compared to DCS.

I disagree with the statement that gas ovens are not great for baking - that's old news - these days good convection gas ovens are fine for baking.
