Congrats to the new parents and I wish them and the new baby boy well.

I won't comment much on this woman's situation as I don't know the details. What I will comment on is how it really disturbs me to see the occasional misuse of the system get prime coverage. It casts a negative pall over what is a godsend to a great many people--the ability to have children when reproductive failures occur. This woman is well past the age of acceptance for most (all?) American clinics, but managed to sneak through the system by being dishonest. Unfortunately, in many people's minds it then becomes wrong for clinics to offer such services at all. It leads to attempts to limit or eliminate certain fertility treatments (current push for this in Virginia, among other states). I do feel it was wrong of this woman to lie, and I think 67 is too old. However, I don't claim to know how to determine what age clinics should use as the cutoff for such IVF procedures, nor am I really qualified to judge this woman's actions. We all age so differently, both internally and externally. I am way outside the norm, having had a completely natural (and surprise) pg and birth at age 44. Wishing to give our dd a sibling, we tried again and were successful--until a m/c ended our hopes. And again. And again. And so on. So we turned to a fertility clinic and got our beautiful twins, born when I was 47. Was it morally wrong? I don't think so, but others would disagree. I don't think any of us can really judge such a thing for another. In all honesty, I think the woman in question did not act in the best interests of her children-to-be. My own opinion is that one must be honest and act in the best interests of ALL parties involved. If she feels she did that, then I won't nay-say her, though I admit to doubts :)

Chances you got pregnant are pretty much nil, so you should stop worrying. As far as IF you are, there are many people out there that are birth-control pill babies (I know that contradicts what I just said, but bear with me here). Those people are the ones that their mothers got pregnant while #1 being the .01% chance of getting pregnant failure rate while on the pill or #2 not taking the pill regularly, but still taking it. Since MOST of the time you've used double forms of control, again chances are very very very very (you get the idea) slim you're preg. As far as taking the preg test...read them, you may be able to still your fears and take them, I think EPT you can take them earlier than after a missed period. Vickey-MN

My mother's friends called me her 'hot house flower'. They thought she pampered me too much. I was an 'only' and she almost lost me. When I was less than three weeks old I was operated on for pyloric stenosis: valve into the stomach constricts so no food can go in; projectile vomiting is the symptom. (This is my ugliest scar -- all down my middle -- no two-piece bathing suits for me!) I've been told they didn't give infants ether then -- only a whiskey-soaked rag to suck. I had all the usual childhood diseases. Measles was no big deal, but I had a terrible case of chicken pox with high fever; I couldn't walk. Still have a dime-sized scar on the side of one knee. You can get mumps in all three sets of glands in your neck; guess how I know that! Avoided the dreaded polio but had classmates who were cripled by it. The general 'cure' for sore throats was to have your tonsils removed; I did. School required vaccinations, so I had those. I remember our doctor making house calls. It probably limited contagion -- one reason I dislike seeing the doctor is mingling with all those sick people in a waiting room! I loved my first pediatrician. She kept a pair of Kerry Blue dogs in her office! They slept under her desk.
