Pregnancy and birth control?

Hello everyone!

I am brand new here, so I would like to tell you a little about myself.

I am 18 years old, 19 in July, and am newly married. I have dated my husband since I was 14. This November we will celebrate 5 years of dating each other. We were just married less than 2 weeks ago. I am loving every moment of the married life. My husband and I did not live together before we got married. We both moved in together from our parents' houses. It was such a change, but a wonderful one.

I absolutely love greeting my husband when he comes home from work and I love seeing him each morning. He is just right there and I don't have to wonder when he is going to call me that day. He's right there!

I know marriage is rough and we are extremely young. (He is 18 as well) But we are doing great. What marriage doesn't have its ups and its downs every now and then?

So anyways, now to my question.

I have been on Ortho Tricyclen for the last 3 months. I just started in when my husband and I set a date for our wedding. I have been doing good with taking the pill so far and haven't had any major side affects. (so far.) Here is the deal.

We have agreed that he would use condoms even though I am on birth control. We are just too young to worry about children, so we decided to be as careful as we possible could be.

There was one night about a week ago (we were still on our honeymoon) when his condom broke. I really doubt there was very much semen because, well, put it straight, he wasn't really putting out very much since we left on our honeymoon... Please tell me that makes sense!

I had a thought yesterday. What if I got pregnant when his condom broke? The pills aren't 100% effective, after all, and any amount of semem, no matter how deluted it was, can result in pregnancy.

I am still taking my pills. I can't take a regular pregnancy test until it is time for my period. If I miss my period, well, chances are I got pregnant. But the fact is, I can't find out until then!

Here is my question.

If my husband got me pregnant that night on our honeymoon and I am still taking my birth conrol pills, what can happen?

Will taking the pills while pregnant affect me or a potential fetus?

Once again, we really are not ready to have a child, so I am hoping beyond hoping that I will get my period next month.

Can anyone give me some advice? Thank you so very much!!!

Chances you got pregnant are pretty much nil, so you should stop worrying. As far as IF you are, there are many people out there that are birth-control pill babies (I know that contradicts what I just said, but bear with me here). Those people are the ones that their mothers got pregnant while #1 being the .01% chance of getting pregnant failure rate while on the pill or #2 not taking the pill regularly, but still taking it.

Since MOST of the time you've used double forms of control, again chances are very very very very (you get the idea) slim you're preg.

As far as taking the preg test...read them, you may be able to still your fears and take them, I think EPT you can take them earlier than after a missed period.

Too late for this time, but have some emergency contraception around at all times (Plan B or such), which prevents conception for day or two later (see their web site.) Still requires a prescription (for politcal reasons) but hopefully won't much longer if the FDA gets its way.

I know you didn't ask this, but if you are having that much trouble keeping on a schedule with your BC, have you thought about depo-provera shots instead? They are once every 90 days, a simple injection. Extra added bonus: most women stop menstrating entirely- no PMS, no bleeding, no bloating, no mood changes. I've been on it for several years now and really am happy with it. I did gain some weight at first, about 10 pounds (also mostly in upper body), but I also had gone back to school at same time, which meant working less and sitting on my behind more (I was a vet tech and on my feet all day). I give myself my injection and save myself a trip to the doctor. But my health insurance covers the entire cost, including the doctor visits if I wanted to do that. I had a co-pay for birth control pills. The pills didn't help my anemia, fainting or vomiting during my period. Since I don't get a period anymore, I don't have those problems. Just a thought. Nobody had told me about Depo-provera; I had to ask about it. Check with your doctor about advserse effects if you are interested. People with certain conditions shouldn't take it.

I'm going to chime in here. I don't read fashion magazines either. For one reason, I don't think they are indicative of what is in style at our "tier", if that's what you want to call it. Perhaps it has to do with where you live also. For instance, I won't say that nude hose are outdated. Yes, in years past I have seen alot of black hose (which is what I try to wear if I absolutely MUST wear hose), tights (which you can't wear with every type dress), and my favorite - pants. LOL!! I still see alot of nude hose on ladies in this area - ladies who are fashionably dressed. I also think we've heard so much about Katherine and Pippa and their nude hose, that we will see more of them. What's in-style or current, etc. in NYC is not what is the look here in Tennessee. I have to say re jeans, I see many more women here wearing the slightly flared leg than the skinny jeans. You may remember that I work at a college, and I do see girls there in the skinnies. The skinnies that are tight enough to look like leggings LOL. IMO, that is who they look best on, the younger girls. I don't think at my age (staring 50 in the face!), that skinnies are the look for me. Another trend - we talked about maxi dresses earlier on this forum, well after that conversation, I started looking more closely at what people were wearing. Again, I saw many more under 30 gals with the maxi dresses. Most were younger than that. They were popular with the college set. I really think they are cute, but I am too short to carry that look off, plus I don't think I could stand all that fabric around my legs. Things like that bug me. Age wise - I'm not so sure. I want to have an updated, current look but I really prefer to have my own style and don't worry about having/wearing what everyone else is wearing or what someone says is the style. Some trends, I like and are favorable on me, some I don't and they're not LOL. I like classic seperates that continue to look current through the years, and update them with trendy jackets, sweaters, accessories, etc. That's just me. While I don't read fasion mags, I will admit to being slightly adicted to home deco mags. LOL Recently downloaded two trial subscriptions to my nook. It IS cheaper!! "Does an annullment mean that in the eyes of the church, the marriage never happened, or that they do not recognize the marriage any longer?" I have had an an annulment. It does not mean that my marriage never happened. Of course it happened. What an annulment does is to show that the marriage was never truly a marriage in the eyes of the church. You have to have a very good reason for getting an annulment. Not everyone is granted one. The "marriage" has to meet certain "requirements" to be brought up to the Tribunal for annulment. The annulment proves that a true marriage never existed. It is not an easy process. "To me, it appears that an annulment in the catholic church is kind of a 'cleansing' step, so to speak, to allow a second marriage." Like my comment above: The annulment only proves that the marriage was null in the eyes of the church. Not eveyone who applies for one will get one. It's not like a divorce. It adheres to strict rules and regulations and one must have a good reason for applying for one. I've seen so many discussions about this topic. And in almost every case, it was pretty obvious that most people were looking at the topic from their own experiences. Yes, for many of us, it's unthinkable that 11 year olds would be handed birth control pills or a supply of condoms. However, I've taught in an urban ghetto, as well as in a very expensive suburb. In the city, there was a school set aside for pregnant girls--but no high school students could get in, because it was filled with jr. high kids. And that was 35 years ago--things are MUCH worse there now. In the suburbs, we had lots of 7th graders having sex--many were charging for it (mind you, they were mostly from pretty well-off families). I feel this way about the question. A child from a family where they are teaching their children NOT to have sex at a young age, to be responsible--is going to have a really difficult time approaching those strict parents to ask for the pill, so if they think they need birth control, I'd rather they had the option of getting it from a trained health care worker. And the other side of the coin? The child who has parents who are uninvolved, maybe too poor to take the kid to the dr, even if they wanted to--well that child for sure needs to have access to birth control, if they think they might need it. Either way, more resources are always better than fewer--IMO.

I seriously doubt that you are pregnant. But good for you for being a responsible adult and planning ahead for your future together. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you don't get your period, take a test. Otherwise, keep enjoying yourself! :)

If you do get pregnant, let us know because its a miracle! Dont worry, at all. I have been with the same guy for 4 years, and on the pill only for most of that.....needless to say I'd probably have a few kids by now...so it works. You are being very responsible...I commend you for that!

I wouldn't recommend Plan B if you are on the pill. This can be dangerous. However your dr. would explain this too you.
Plan B is for women who are not on the pill already.

Nearly all my friends use the pill, without another sort of birth control, and no one has had an unplanned pregnancy.

Remember though, certain drugs, like antibiotics can prevent the pill from working so if you are taking something it is smart to double up on protection. That is also something to discuss with your Dr. next time you visit. Certain herbal supplemants can also affect the pill.

I wouldn't be worried at all. I am sure everything is fine!

Wow, thanks a ton everyone. I really appreciate you taking the time to calm my mind. I will still hope for my period though. And some of the side affects of the pill say some spotting may happen and some women report missing a period all together. Since I've only been on it for a few months, I suppose if I miss my period this month anyways, it could be due to the pill. I will still take an EPT if that happens.

I agree with you all when you say if a pregnancy happens, be happy because it's a miracle. It really would be if my dear husband and I start our family early.

Statistically there is 1/5000 of a chance that you are pregnant, given the data.

You are right, you could miss a period. I have been on 3 dif. kinds of oral contraceptive, and on one I did not get a period for 3 months, because the hormone was too strong or something. Dont worry if you miss one, they will become lighter anyway, and less cramps. But if you miss 2 , time for a test/doctor visit.

Be aware though, side affects such as mood swing/depression can happen in the first few months....I experienced them heavily (I have never before or since had screaming, shoe-throwing fits, lol), but altogether, the pill has been a blessing!
