Placing curtain rod

I have a small LR window and needing help where to place the curtain rod. I can't afford custum window covering, so I bought standard size. I need to know how far from the side of the window can I place the rod. The panels are long, so I know I will have to place the rod several inches above the window. I live in a duplex and this is the only window in the LR.

Your rod could extend well beyond (about a foot) your existing window opening so that your panels would extend into your window area just a couple inches. That way, it would make the window appear much larger/wider than it actually is and let in the maximum amount of light.

Are these just stationary panels for decoration? I would do what charlieinnj suggests, especially since you have plenty of wall space. I lightened up your pic too:

My $.02, I don't think you need to hang those window treatments at the same height. I woudln't. I agree with PP in saying that since the ceiling heights vary, I would treat each window individually re: height. As for rods, I hear you on the cost! In my old living room, and now my family room, I put my curtains on a traverse rod. Not the prettiest but the functionality was key. They now sell decorative traverse rods. Much cheaper option than your decorator's option. Alternatively, I have used the adjustable rods from Country Curtains that are metal but the finials are wood (Regal line). I was pleased with them and they are a great price. If you have the curtains on rings, they would be easier to open. I didn't use rings and it was a little bit of a pain to open and shut but I did it several times a day in my son's room due to naps and I survived. So, I really just depends on ease of use, decor, etc. While $750 is a lot of money, it is pretty much the going rate when you do these things through a decorator. For me, I remedied that by going high end in some rooms and budget in others. Hope this helps a bit!

Thank you, everyone! I will check that thread out nhb, thanks for posting it. Shadylady, that is just the open closet door so there will be room for curtains on the wall! we have tossed around the idea of just having blinds though so that’s still a possibility. And finally Jinx, thank you!! Those pictures are really helpful. I may end up putting them on the trim since there are already the holes on ours- once a fresh coat of paint is on it might look nice to showcase the top of the trim above the curtains like in those pics. Thank you all!

I agree^^^and get the kind of rod that doesn’t have a center support that impedes the stack in any way. This way you could have all the windows covered except for a sliver open by the right where the window is operable. This way on a nice night you will get privacy but some air flow when you want the windows open.

Terriks and Charlie thanks for your suggestions. They will be used for privacy also, but I wanted the rod wide enough, so the tabs could be viewed. Terriks how did you lighten the pic? Thanks alot. I just got a digital camera, so I am still learning. I should have taken a picture of the panel. The panels are sage. Thank you.

I would say typically you would want to leave approx. 3 in. on either side. As far as how high above the window...that would depend on the length of the panel and personal preference. With tab tops, you want to make sure the bottom of the tabs sit a little higher than the top of the window. Also, if you are using sheers, you wouldn't want to go too far out b/c you will be able to see the wall behind them and it could end up looking funny. Otherwise you can extend them further to make the window look larger, as mentioned above. Good luck!
