Please help me decide on the paint color for my kitchen

I am absolutely horrid at choosing colors so I turn to you, a group with fabulous ideas and results. I can tell you that I love warm colors and the only two paint colors that I presently have and love are Behr Oat Straw (master bedroom and adjoining bath) and Benjamin Moore Yosemite Sand (upstairs bedroom). The entire house has white woodwork which is good.

Here's what I'm working with in our DIY kitchen reno. The cabinets are natural cherry in a galley style set-up with one side along the wall and the other is an island. Beyond the island is a small living area with large windows on three walls. There really isn't a lot of wall space.

On the island will be a dark green granite (I'm ashamed to say I can't remember its name) and on the cabinet run is the slate looking Corian. The floor in the kitchen area is 12" tile in sandy tones. The appliances, faucet and cabinet pulls and knobs will be stainless. The sink is white farmhouse. The backsplash will be white subway tile. The living area of the room will be carpeted and I have not chosen that yet. Pendants over the island are antique and brass with glass shades (hopefully I'm not committing a major decorating nightmare with the clashing metals!).

Finally, we are planning on selling the house so I'm not willing to put up anything too bold.

What else can I tell you? Let me know if I've left something out.

What color are the walls in the adjacent living area? That would be helpful to know.

Yes, that is a good thought...and both of them are changing!

The house is a mid-1800s Cape in Maine, the kitchen an added room off the back with a doorway leading into the living room of the main house (so you can't see much of that room). You enter the kitchen from a mudroom which is presently painted blue.

I'm planning on changing the colors in both of those rooms (and the remainder of the rooms) to be more in the palette of the colors I mentioned.

I haven't used these particular colors, but of your two choices, I think Antique White with Macadamia would be better. There is too little contrast between the colors with the other combination for my taste. Are these your choices or were they given to you to choose from? If these are your choices, have you considered using Antique White for the cabinets with Basket Beige for the walls? I think Basket Beige is a richer color than Macadamia, but I'm not crazy about it with Softer Tan. Or, maybe changing to Creamy (SW 7012) or Roman Column (SW 7562) for your lighter color?

Just a warning on white. It does not hold up on the brick well and I have found it looks bad after a while. Grey, that looks nice and holds up well. there is a home decorating forum on here under "that home site" and they do a lot of photo-shopping of ideas including house exteriors. I posted my house on there and they did it in about 15 versions which included the landscaping. You might want to try them and if they help post a link on here so we can go see. I have included the link to my house. the thread is old so you will notice that a lot of photos are missing. Scroll down and you see many ideas they contributed although the best ones are missing.. No accent walls. You have an open space that should be one wall color. Any of the greens would be perfect for the island and for accessories like pillows and throws. Test them out though- in particular Sea salt can look gray, blue, or green depending on lighting.

Why not use one of the colors you already love? I think a neutral will look fine with cherry (I'm biased, I have SW Basket Beige with my natural cherry cabs).

If you don't want a beige, a sage green seems as if it would look fantastic with the granite & cherry combo.

whenicit: love that name, that's me too! Yes, neutral is definitely right, but which one?! So many choices. I do love green but had thought that that would compete with the green on the island...what the heck do I know :) that's why I asked.

I can post a picture (although it's bedeviled me in the past) but I really don't have anything to show yet. The cabinets aren't up but you could see the general layout of the room and the the floor.

Try a subtle gray green like BM Gray Mirage?

sueb20: I love the names of paint, that sounds beautiful and, interestingly enough, it was the kind of color that I wanted to find for the siding of our home; we finally went vinyl to my husband's delight.

I found the color on BM's virtual fan and I'll be pulling that color when I go to the store next week. It's overwhelming when I go there and to think that I'm going to need to find the right colors for five other rooms; OMG!
