how to re-create an old recipe

There is a Curried Chicken Noodle Soup recipe that I have had for years that is very, very good. Don't laugh! but it was made using Wyler's Soup Starter and velveeta cheese. I said don't laugh!!!

It looks like Wyler's doesn't make the Soup Starter in the tall round tubs anymore. Now they make Mrs. Grass's soups in envelopes. I know the tub had: dried vegetables (including potatoes), noodles, seasonings, chicken bouillon granules, and probably some herbs like parsley.

Here is the recipe for the soup:

1 3 lb. chicken, skin and fat removed

5-6 cups water

1 cup white wine

1 container chicken noodle soup starter

In a large pot, bring all to a boil and simmer 1 hour covered. Take out chicken, cool, and cut up half of the chicken meat into small bite-sized pieces. Return chicken to pot and add 8 oz. velveeta cheese in cubes and 1 t. curry powder. Warm to melt cheese and serve hot.

Any help on how to make this soup now that Soup Starter is no longer available?

hmmmm....not even a nibble. Well, I found a recipe for making your own dried chicken noodle soup so I plan to try my recipe soon using that. I'll report the outcome.

Hi Teresa...yep, a nibble - definitely. I spent about an hour this morning checking around to see if you had missed something on the internet - as far as finding the "recipe"for the soup starter...since I am no good at concocting something like that onmy own! :-)

After finding that Wyler's was also owned by Borden and Heinz, and then after searching the soup aisle at my grocery store to find something similar...I gave up...I should have posted.

But = no, you're not alone, I tried...:-) I love a challenge...sorry I couldn't help.

ccaggiano, the amount of sugar used in fruit jams is not a safety issue. Traditional pectin needs a certain ratio of pectin/sugar/fruit to jell. An all fruit spread with no sugar at all is still safe to can, the issue is in whether or not it will jell. It has been noted here that "Pomona will jell water", so the sugar ratio isn't an issue. Cut it as low as you like until you are happy with the taste, it'll still be safe. I will note, however, that low sugar/no sugar spreads do not store as well or as long after opening and I've found that no-sugar spreads lose color. This picture shows this year's strawberry jam. Sylviatexas, yes, I have eaten mock apple pie that a friend's mother made for an after school treat when I went home with her after school one day about 1955. I had never had it, and if I had not been told, I would have thought it was a slice of apple pie. The Ritz crackers are halved, and the only thing that gives it away is that the edges of the "apples" are scalloped or look like they have been peeled with pinking shears. That was an interesting visit. When my friend introduced me to her mother, her mom gasped and asked if I was Jack ____'s daughter. I replied that I was, and she proceeded to tell me how he was so handsome and she had had a crush on him in their single days. At dinner that night I related this mom's report of my dad. He was tickled to hear that a girl he did not remember from his past remembered him. I have seen pictures of my dad from back then, and he looked like a slender Bert Lancaster.

Tall order. Perhaps someone who follows stone and tile can suggest some products for you. In the past, there was available a product called Barre Slate by the Kentile company. It was a solid vinyl product that was very realistic looking. Also, we had available large sheets of solid vinyl in stone and slate looks that could be cut and fashioned to look like the real thing. You might be able to find such a product still out there or possibly the same thing in slab rubber. Were you to find a slab vinyl or rubber in the right look, it could be cut and fashioned in the sizes you'd want and then grouted with an epoxy grout (same as you would with tile), I have done such a thing and the results were incredible. That's all I got.

Thanks for trying, Stacy! I really appreciate your looking for me. Years ago I even went to the trouble to take out all the noodles and measure their weight so I could duplicate the Soup Starter - it was expensive even then for just a bunch of dried stuff!

I think simply making or buying the dried chicken noodle soup then adding my own fresh/frozen vegetables and seasonings will come close enough. I really think it is the cooking in wine, the Velveeta cheese, and the curry that give this soup its distinctive flavor.

Soup starter is "boullion granules" and dried veggies and herbs.
You can do a much better version of the same flavors (without the artificial flavor notes) by sauteeing 1/2 cup of finely chopped onion, 1/4 cup finely chopped green pepper, 1/2 cup finely chopped carrots, 2 teaspoons parsley flakes ( dried parsley leaves) 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 a crushed bay leaf.
If it doesn't taste enough like chicken, add2 tablespoons of Swanson's chicken flavor granules...or use a quart of boxed chicken broth instead of the water.
