Need Help Preping Walls For Painting-Magic Marker, Etc

I am in the process of prepping the walls for paint. I have removed 2 layers of wallpaper of which both top and bottom of the wallpaper were sealed with white paint, I guess, to prevent the edges from peeling. Some of this paint has come off easily with scraping. However, there is still much to much still left on the walls. What is the best/easiest way to remove this? Also, these old plaster walls look like they were used as chalkboards. They have been all over with magic marker. What is the best way of prepping these walls before painting? I know I need to wash them down with TSP or Dirtex?? Is one better than another? Also, which primer is better for this project, an oil based or shellac based primer. Is it Bins or Bullseye??? Thanks

Dirtex is better as it does not have to be flood rinsed like TSP and it is still a good general purpose, pre-paint cleaner. I would sand the paint ridges as best you can and then perhaps skim coat over the area to help disguise them some. If there is really mass amounts of marker writing on the walls, then I would roll the primer over this using either Kilz (original) or BIN. You can also use Gardz as a primer over the residual wallpaper paste, but the Gardz will not work on the magic marker stains.

Thanks very much paintguy. As if scraping wallpaper off a wall is not enough...I got a gallon of Bin primer. I think it will be best to wash off the walls with a scrub brush to remove the paste residue.

I wish I had some pictures for you and would take some, but at the moment my craft closet is over flowing since our son moved back home for a bit and used my craft/sewing room for his living room and I've not gotten it back together since he moved back with his wife. ((YAY)) Anyway I have a four by eight sheet of heavy duty pegboard on one wall with commercial grade clear plastic baskets made for pegboard that I purchased all this when a fabric store that I worked at was closing. Not sure where you'd be able to find them, but if you can they are awesome for storing larger items on a wall. If you have mostly smaller items using the over the door shoe storage pockets in clear work great too. I had them in all our closets at our last home for storing everything from hats and mittens to health and beauty items. If you do use a pegboard make sure to buy the heavier duty because they'll last forever. Also check HoDe and Lowe's for unique storage gadgets made for them. They have little buckets, jars with lids along with a variety of hooks. We usually get ours at HoDe, but I'm sure Lowe's would have a good variety of pegboard storage gadgets too. I did a bit of a search and see there's even metal pegboard. Now that should last forever.

I have absolutely no issues with using the proclassic primer and didn't need to practice with it at all. I guess I just don't get that. I also have used many a brush, but like the nylon for this application. I don't have brush strokes...but I don't paint as much as a pro so perhaps it's use and use and use :) I think that people are reading the information in my clipping incorrectly. The COLOR code I put in there is for a color called Woodsey Brown which is an exterior color (you typically get more deep tones in exterior colors) but the PAINT is NOT and exterior paint. Just the color! The proclassic primer adhears to ANY surface, without sanding. I love the stuff because I've used it on some very glossy surfaces and it's held like magic! I do wash surfaces and make sure they're free of dust and dirt, but I rarely sand anymore. My professional painter was very skeptical but is now sold on the quality of these two products together. The primer is a gem, and the quality of the top coat is wonderful as well. I like a high quality finish and a strong finish as well...and together these two will give you that in any combination of colors ;)

Thanks for the images. I wouldn't worry about hardware or stick-on backsplash tiles. I think a simple, neutral-toned area rug might look nice in the middle of the kitchen workspace to hide the flooring a bit. Paint the kitchen and the living room (the red room in the background) the same or similar colors - something lighter. I wouldn't go gray-tones in your kitchen with the wood cabinets and counters - maybe an off white? don't want it to be too stark. Buyers sometimes have a hard time seeing past paint colors they dislike. The light fixtures could use an update, but you don't want to replace them with something that looks cheap, but you also don't want to spend a lot of money. I would do a nice flushmount in the middle of the kitchen - keep it simple so the ceilings feel higher and it lets a chandelier over the table stand out more.

That stone alcove over the stove would bug me from a cleaning perspective. But major bucks to tear out. How likely are you to do that? You can paint the cabinets by yourself, but you need to use nasty oil based paint and a sprayer. My friend had hers done, the people took them down and sprayed them out in her barn (so it could be done with proper equipment and ventilation) and then they were put back up. You could do that yourself but only if you were very handy as far as taking them down and putting them back up. If you don't prep them properly, the paint will just peel off. My landlady paints her kitchens with very little prep. every couple of years, the paint does not stick. I'm lazy. I'd live with it and save up for the redo. Meanwhile I'd paint the shelving units next to the fireplace the same color as the wall and call it good. I wouldn't paint one stone wall and not the other. I painted a cheapo fireplace wall once for that same friend who did her cabinets. It's a lot of work but in her case it was a fake stone backwall behind a wood stove. Stone is stone-colored. If you want white, cover the stone with white tiles. Painted stone looks weird. But that's just my opinion, YMMV so if you love the look of painted stone, go for it. But I wouldn't do it in the vain hopes it's going to look like something else, other than painted stone.

Yes, that is correct. I actually use those green scrubbie pads that you use for cleaning dishes on the paste and then big sponges for the rinsing.

PG once again speaks wisely here...!

Also consider the Scotchbrite pads that come with a handle on them for "shearing-thru" the paste/stripper gunk!

If PAINT is still trapping wallpaper?!
* Keep the stripper-solution wet on the wall.
* NOW...get some light plastic and press onto the walls...the ENTIRE wall.
* This keeps solution wet and dissolving paste! Now go out to eat, come back, and start scraping. Only peel back plastic ~1' at a time, while you're moving along the wall.
* Rinse/rinse/rinse this paste off, let dry, and prime EVERYTHING with BIN, Cover-stain, or Odorless Oil...all from Zinsser.
