Tongue & Groove Pine

We built our sunroom about 19 years ago. The walls are tongue and groove pine.

At that time, I put on one coat of finish. I do not remember what it was, but know that it was oil-base and it was a flat finish. I believe it was a Pratt & Lambert product. I have not seen that brand around here in a long time, and the store where I bought it no longer exists.

I believe I need to seal this again - or do I???

I can see areas particularly on the window sills where it appears to be bare wood.

I also have a few areas where there are water stains, plants spilling over.

I know that the wood has aged, i.e., yellowed, so sanding is probably not a good idea.

My questions ---

Should I apply another finish to protect the wood?? I would want a matte finish, so it looks like wood and has no shine.

If so, how should I prepare the wood?

If so, what products would you recommend?

More than likely, you used Pratt and Lambert H39 Dull Varnish. This product is still produced today and can be purchased at a Pratt and Lambert paint dealer. This also comes in a satin finish. I would probably lightly sand and thoroughly wipe down the walls before varnishing.

Richard, thank you for your reply. I will be that's it. I remember that it wasn't "flat" --- dull was the word. The store has been gone for at least ten or more years and I then found a BM dealer nearby so have been using that brand of paint. I will have to search out a P&L dealer. I was thinking as well to lightly sand. I know some of the grain was raised from the last time. I know I will not get out some of the water spots, but sanding way down will make an even bigger mess. I am not sure when wood "ages", how deep the color turn is. I will use the dull again. I am hoping to just do the walls. The ceiling is pretty high, and I would like to avoid that - so another coat of the same on the walls should do the trick. Thanks for the response.

Thanks, Pal. Yes, we are going for a light mid-tone for the walls. I am hand sanding this myself. I don't want to do any more work than necessary! The oak beams are a bit of a challenge bc those were stained very dark in the 1970s. The woman who grew up in the house told us the floor was a light oak color before her parents redid them in a dark Jacobean stain in the 1970s. Seems like the dark stains hit here in the mid-1970s and before it was originally "natural" looking. pamghattan, thank you! I work on it a little at a time. It seems like I have made little progress. But then I see the old photos and I realize how much fresher it feels. Well at least the dinning room feels better. Hamamelis, renewing is definitely not the trend. But the warm glow is wonderful. The wood was so damaged and darkened with age the place lost the glow a bit. It felt dingy and not just dark. This side of the house wouldn't have worked white anyway. It needs cozy colors. as we update and fix, if something is original and it works, or it can be made to work, we try to keep it. If stuff has been previously replaced or something is damaged beyond repair we do what we think is best to make the house modern and livable, in keeping with the spirit and idea of the house. I appreciate your feedback. We realize the wood--even painstakingly refreshed --isn't for most folks.

First of all you are not getting ship lap. This is ship lap….as in the siding of boats, with a specific rabbet joint so boards join and repeal water. The “ship lap” you would be putting in the bathroom will have a “nickel” space to make it look authentic, but all those spaces have to be vacuumed on a regular basis. I wouldn’t want two different horizontal anythings in an area.

You can go to the website, www.prattandlambert.com and search for a dealer. They also have a nice magazine which you can sign up for at the website. It comes out about three or four times a year. If you cannot find a dealer close to your house, you can probably have a dealer ship the product. Some Ace Hardware stores carry Pratt and Lambert. I did do a search and found a couple of dealers not too far from here. I checked the website and this varnish comes latex and oil. I am pretty sure I used the oil. I just hope memory is serving me correctly. And thanks for the offer of further help. I won't get to this project for another month. DH will be out of town for a couple of days - so a good time to do a big project!
